Breakfast with Ted
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on September 24, 2010 at 7:54AM CST

Ted Gilmore drew the speaking assignment at this week's Big Red Breakfast.

Most people are anticipating the Huskers to blow South Dakota State out of the water tomorrow, but Gilmore said coaches have been pushing players as hard as any other week.

"In my opinion it's a trap game because you come off a big win, all the emotions that come with that," Gilmore said. "So what we try to do this week is stretch our guys. We don't want them to get comfortable at all."

Of course, time did not pass without a question about Taylor Martinez.

You might remember Martinez worked some as a wide receiver on the scout team last year.

Gilmore joked that he was the one guy actually hoping Martinez would fail at the QB spot. "Because guess who would have got him?" Gilmore said with a grin. "It’s one of those deals where you’re sitting in the staff room, listening to what is being said, holding your fingers crossed."

Gilmore said Martinez still teases him sometimes when the coach walks past the quarterbacks while they're playing catch. "He'll just kind of catch the ball in one hand and smile at me," Gilmore said.

About Mike McNeill: "He has brought a sense of calmness to the room ... and he's doing a tremendous job of blocking for me in the slot."

About Quincy Enunwa: "He's giving you gray hairs, but he's well worth it. He really is. He's a guy we got to continue to force feed, and as the year progresses, you're going to see more of him."

Gilmore recalled one of the first practices when he had Enunwa participate against Niles Paul in a contact drill known as the "Husker drill."

The coach noted most freshman back down to alpha male senior like Paul. "But when that youngster got his shot, he got after Niles."

About Khiry Cooper: "Got to get him stronger ... Once that occurs, once that body starts to change, he's going to be a better player for us."

More coming.

Nice to know they are stretching the players.

No broken bones.

PT; welcome back!

Posted by: Outside The Box on September 24, 2010 8:18AM CST
winredwin - You should cut this page out and put it in your scrapbook. Your grandkids will be proud.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 24, 2010 8:24AM CST
Thanks General. The lap top at home is broke. New one on the way.

Actually have been kind of busy at work.

Posted by: joe t on September 24, 2010 8:36AM CST
Khiry Cooper....all but disappeared.....that guy needs to find some focus and work ethic. Gullenski has been MIA as well.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 24, 2010 8:36AM CST
It is just really cool to see the young talent coming to this program. Bo and staff are doing an excellent job in recruiting. And our success is only going to help that.

Many are scared we will lose our foothold in Texas and as a result the program will fold before our very eyes.

I ain't buying that for a minute. We will continue to get the type of kids we want and need.

The future is bright.

Posted by: Country Husker on September 24, 2010 8:54AM CST
I agree with PT. We have many weapons on both sides of the ball and we have a coaching staff that obviously know what they are doing.

The future is BIG, FAST, and RED!

I think CG is seeing some time on special teams. With the talent we have, if ya snooze, ya lose.

Posted by: Bloozman on September 24, 2010 9:04AM CST
When we kick Texass all over the field this year, kids will be lining up in Texass to play for BO!

Posted by: Bloozman on September 24, 2010 9:06AM CST
If Martinez would ever go down, who would you feel most comfortable with replacing him?

Posted by: PT Husker on September 24, 2010 9:12AM CST
Jamal Turner. :)

Posted by: PT Husker on September 24, 2010 9:15AM CST
Cody Green is the next in line. He is best suited to allow us to continue the path we have chosen on offense. We need the running threat from that position to continue to be effective and he would be more of a threat than Zac.

But I really don't want to talk about it. LOL

Posted by: Denver Bob on September 24, 2010 9:17AM CST
Bloozman....

Zac. Offensive production would go down, but time of possession would go up and therefore help the defense. NU would still be a great team.

I've yet to see Green do anything that gives me warm fuzzies.

Posted by: Outside The Box on September 24, 2010 9:20AM CST
PT - If you're referring to Cody Green being on special teams in your post above, I think it's actually Ciante Evans (who is 17 on defense) that you're seeing.

If I misunderstood you, than ignore this completely.

PT,

Curenski Gilleylen is not listed in the "Participation Summary" in the official stats of any game this year.

Thus, according to the all important stat-tracking clipboard-holders...he has not set foot on the field.

You got to watch that PT guy he's pretty sly:)

Posted by: PT Husker on September 24, 2010 9:32AM CST
Box I was refferring to Currenski. But according to Stat nerd in Vermont I was wrong.

Posted by: Bloozman on September 24, 2010 9:35AM CST
PT, I hear ya. That's a tough thing to even think about. I wonder how that young freshman QB is doing (can't recall his name right at the moment) he may be better than Green or Lee!

Posted by: Bloozman on September 24, 2010 9:37AM CST
Denver Bob, I agree with you on Green. Not too impressive yet, including last year.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 24, 2010 9:38AM CST
Blooz, Carnes. I doubt if they would pull the Red shirt.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 24, 2010 9:39AM CST
Charger Dude. Who does NorthStar have tonight?

Posted by: Bloozman on September 24, 2010 9:41AM CST
Thanks PT. Has anyone even heard how that young man is doing? Pretty tough reporting when you aren't allowed access I guess.

Posted by: charger on September 24, 2010 9:46AM CST
NorthStar is on the road to Norfolk. We can win this one. Should be a good game.

Posted by: wacky4huskers on September 24, 2010 10:16AM CST
I for one don't want to lose T-Magic but if that happened I think Zac Lee would manage the game better than Cody and if he would play like he did against Arizona that would be good enough to do the job.

Posted by: Miami Beach Husker on September 24, 2010 10:33AM CST
K Cooper needs to make a 100% committment to football or he will just be a 2nd/4rd teamer.

On the team, but no real impact.

Coop, what's it going to be? The talent coming in will only get better and better

Posted by: Country Husker on September 24, 2010 10:43AM CST
Don't be dissin' Khiry, man. Baseball players are cool.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on September 24, 2010 11:08AM CST
Ran into an older fan at the UW game and have no idea if he has any inside info, but he said confidently that they may redshirt Green next year and move him to DE. This apparently because Carnes looks impressive and they want to get Cody on the field. Anyone heard such rumors?

Posted by: Country Husker on September 24, 2010 11:13AM CST
Give him a chance to strip somebody else for a change, eh, SVH?

Posted by: Bloozman on September 24, 2010 11:38AM CST
Good one CH, good one!

Posted by: wacky4huskers on September 24, 2010 11:52AM CST
I agree, Khiry should decide between football or baseball and go all in so he can shine in one or the other or he will not be able to maximize his talent.

Posted by: Fitzy on September 24, 2010 12:47PM CST
Some of you are morons... you know who you are.

Cody is a great young QB with limited experience and and NFL caliber arm strength. He has looked just fine and would get better faster with more playing time if needed. He tried too hard to make a play in Seattle and lost the ball. Not a big deal and I am certain he learned from that.

Bring the Pain-

Posted by: Fitzy on September 24, 2010 12:49PM CST
Cody is easily the #2 QB. He has above average running ability and Elite arm strength. His accuracy is greatly improved and I would be totally comfortable if he had to play heavy minutes.

Posted by: gomenintights on September 24, 2010 12:54PM CST
I'm going to watch Jamal Turner play tonight. at Farmington Field in Ft. Worth. Can't wait!

Posted by: gomenintights on September 24, 2010 12:56PM CST
I hope to see Husker fans there tonight in support of Jamal Turner.

Posted by: joe t on September 24, 2010 1:04PM CST
Fitzy...good call. People shouldn't bag Green just yet, there is plenty of a future still ahead and you never know what can happen at the QB position (injuries, etc). Why in the world would moving him to DE make sense???

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on September 24, 2010 1:21PM CST
To clarify, I wasn't proposing that or saying its likely, only that a fan had heard that this was the plan. That fan may be tied in or he may be totally off base, but here's where he could make sense.

Rumors are that Carnes has been impressive. T Mart obviously looks like a 3 year starter and that will limit playing time...injuries always possible, so he could start next week too. But if Carnes looks as good as Cody in the spring....well, we've seen someone go from bowl winner to #3 on the depth chart. rom successful starter to #3 on a depth chart? With Turner and possibly Starling coming next year, it gets more crowded and Starling has elite arm strength, not that this alone gets anyone on the field.

None of this has to do with a fumble. Cody seems like a team player and a solid NU guy and he's certainly not afraid of competing. But a switch might get him more playing time. Depends on what he wants more. I wish him well at whatever he decides to try. Nolan Cromwell made a career and a Pro Bowl by switching from QB to safety on NFL arrival. If he switches, I hope he doesn't get caught in the middle like LT.

Corn...agreed on the weight thing. LB would make more sense, but this is just a random fan in the stands (not me) comment, not a reason to dump on Watson.

Coach Wats (Thud master), was on Sports Nightly last night....

Said Brion Carnes is the real deal....has looked very good, has Division 1 abilities and maturity right out of HS.

Quite similar to T-Jet Martinez...very impressive, fast, with good arm.

Just learning the system, that's all.

Just curious if Jamal Turner is OK with us having a 3 game superstar freshman QB featured in Sports Illustrated this week.

Jamal, it is all about competition. Bring it on, right?

We got another good one boys....waiting in the wings.

Nice article in SI, wasn't it Miami? Along with the love from Mel Kiper on numerous NU players being high on the draft board. Of course, a win over Texas is the real deal. :)

Posted by: gomenintights on September 24, 2010 4:07PM CST
According to the article on Jamal Turner, Sept. 21st, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, he is just as excited as ever to come to Nebraska. As stated in the article, "He's so eager to become a Cornhusker that he took a full load of summer school to make sure he stays on track to enroll at mid-term, just in time for spring ball. " "I get goose bumps thinking about it, " Turner said. As far as other QB competition goes at Nebraska, Husker's Illustrated John Talman states in the article that Turner doesn't have anything to worry about., "I just think he is the perfect fit for what Nebraska wants to do." Talman said, and then states, "He is an instant highlight reel." Bubba Starling, has since joined Turner as committing to Nebraska, according to this same article and is listed as the 5th-best dual threat QB, but he may be drafted in the Major League Baseball draft and is expected to go somewhere in the first few rounds. Then the article states that regardless, Turner isn't one to back away from a challenge and looks forward to any healthy competition he'll have in Lincoln. Turner is also described as charismatic and humble in the article and his high school coach, Danny Edelman, shakes his head in astonishment when asked to describe Turner's performance.

Posted by: gomenintights on September 24, 2010 4:16PM CST
Here is some more info from the Star Telegram article regarding the passing away of Jamal Turner's mother, Rusty Turner, age 41, just before the first game of the season when he rushed 39 times for 298 yards and 5 TD's and threw for 114 yards: "I had to play," he said, "I probably would ahve cried that whole day, and the next day, and the next if I didn't. Playing made me feel better. After we won the game it was like God telling me that everything was OK, that my mom was in a better place." His coach, Danny Edelman said, "NAturally we are all going to face some advers situations. He's been one of those young men that ahve turned it into a strength."

Adam Carriker was a HS QB who became a pretty good DE for the Huskers and in the NFL as well. Utah regularly converts HS star QBs into defensive players. Paul Kruger was a tall QB who became a DE. After wiping out Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, he left a year early to become a starter at DE in the NFL.

Kruger's "little" brothers are now freshman and sophomore DL star linemen for Utah. Former QB Manis is now starting OLB. Hotshot QB recruit from southern California, Brian Blecken, took over a starting safety job as an 18 year old and has been separating receivers from their teeth as well as a key overtime interception against Pitt. Not to mention another who played QB for Utah for two years and now is a starting safety for Nevada.

A good, athletic QB can play just about any position. If he is big, even on the DL as Carriker and Kruger have proven.
