Breakfast with Beck
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on November 20, 2009 at 7:51AM CST

Greetings from Omaha. Tim Beck got the call for this week's Big Red Breakfast.

The running backs coach said he's told his kids that Saturday's game against Kansas State is going to be "like a prize fight championship boxing match."

"You just got to come out swinging and keep swinging and keep swinging and keep swinging," Beck said he told his players. "And you're going to take some hits, but you can't go down."

Beck also showed the crowd a psyche-up video coaches will show the team before the game. The video begins by showing the definition of "opportunity." Then you see the words: "Goal #1: Dominate the Big 12 North."

What follows is video of the team working out in the summer, obviously emphasizing the message of all the work that's been put into this season. Highlights of the Kansas came come after that. The video ends with the words: "Go get it!"

About Rex Burkhead's return, Beck said: "It's funny. Having Rex back at practice, I saw a difference in my guys practicing because they were like, 'Uh oh. Playing time. I better pick it up.' Competition is a great thing."

About Roy Helu, Beck said: "He lays it out there every week and he won't ever say so if he's hurt."

After the Iowa State game, and sensing Helu was't himself after two fumbles, Beck said he told the junior running back he had to be honest with him about his health.

"I said, Roy, you got to be honest with me. There's a lot of things about toughness, being a tough guy. Toughness also means telling the truth. If you're hurt, I gotta know. You can't hurt this football team going out there if you're injured. I know you wanna be that guy. But you gotta be honest. I think that changed him a lot after that game.'

About Helu's health now, Beck said: "He's better than he was, but obviously he's not where he was at the beginning of the year. Let's put it that way."

The coach said he thinks the running backs enjoy having a fullback in front of them and running out of the I-formation.

Anyway, I'll have some more from Beck in a bit.

I'll be going to a 50th bday party for a K-state grad that lives here in MO tonight. Need to be on my best behavior to avoid any conversation regarding tomorrows game. Not sure I can pull it off..............may have to avoid the alcohol.............eek.........

Perhaps I should bring a copy of that facemask photo Nish posted on the other blog along, that ought to liven up the conversation.

GO BIG RED! Let's kick some cats.

Posted by: Buzz on November 20, 2009 8:04AM CST
With burkhead back in the mix, our running backs should stay fresh the whole game

Posted by: Country Husker on November 20, 2009 8:05AM CST
wait, wait, wrong cred, it was no nothing that posted the facemask headturner.

Sorry, no.

Posted by: Country Husker on November 20, 2009 8:07AM CST
Anybody got any ideas on how to avoid talking Husker football with the KSU fans? Not sure my ribs can take all the elbows I'll get from the wife if I start talking about tomorrows game.

Posted by: Country Husker on November 20, 2009 8:10AM CST
And back to the topic, I like our chances if it's a slugfest. I think we are tougher and stronger and we held up well against OK and KU which I think were similar prizefight types of games.

Go Big Red! Keep it close and knock 'em out in the 4th!

My own personal blog. How nice. lol

Country, I think I would feel a case of the Flu coming on. "Honey, would you mind going without me. I just don't feel well at all"

Posted by: Country Husker on November 20, 2009 8:19AM CST
Thanks, PT, but then I'll miss all the good food. Maybe a "could you bring me home some goodies" along with a little cough and sniffle?

Gotta give kudos to the Buffs for the battle they put up in Stillwater. If it comes down to a field goal contest in Boulder I like our chances. It's obvious CU is only a couple of players away from being back in the thick of things. Poor discipline and a shaky kicker cost them a game on the road against a top 25 team. I know OSU was without Robinson and it probably wouldn't have been close with him in, but he didn't play. It's going to be a war at Folsom as these guys try to protect their coach and avoid being the fifth team in a row Husker beat. GBR!

Or you could eat and then leave early before all the convo starts. Probably a good group of folks and all the ribbing will be in good fun.

Enjoy.

Wy, Frankly they remind me of us a month ago. Good team that just can't help making mistakes at key times. They had several chances to put that game away. Really fun 4th quarter though.

Posted by: Country Husker on November 20, 2009 8:29AM CST
Yep, PT, they are great people. They have daughters who play volleyball with mine, so we have that to talk about. Maybe if I get 'em going on our local coaches, we can skip over the game.

These particular KSUers are pretty even keeled. More than willing to admit they sucked during the Prince years, kinda like our HWNMNBM period. They do love 'em some Bill Snyder though. Thier TO.

and i said what about, breakfast with Timothy...
being in manhattan, I get very tired hearing about Daniel Thomas and how KU was able to "shut down" suh. I hope we hold them to 70 yds rushing and we go over 200 at least. Their front four should not be able to tackle us in the backfield all night.

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on November 20, 2009 8:43AM CST
PT,
Lots of similarities. I hope they keep the Zen man.

Posted by: Country Husker on November 20, 2009 8:45AM CST
Oh, my gosh, you mean we have to stick to the topic, sorry, my bad. And I hope my occasional misspelled word doesn't offend, either.

lets see, KSU facemask photo, slugfest blog entry, 31-10 prediction, sorry if those aren't on topic enough.

Is orton Going to play this weekend? Hope so. They need him

Posted by: ScottMa on November 20, 2009 8:48AM CST
Does anyone feel that CU has an advantage in having an extra day to prepare for NU, while we will have a short week?

Posted by: husker@ksu on November 20, 2009 8:52AM CST
Country,
Didnt mean to attack, it goes with the tune of a very similar song. All previous comments were welcome. Also if it werent for spell check on my comp i would be done for.

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on November 20, 2009 8:55AM CST
I think CU let it all hang out in Stillwater, but they always play the Huskers hard (as does everyone else). I think if we jump on the kitties and are able to sub it won't make a difference after a win.

Posted by: Country Husker on November 20, 2009 8:58AM CST
Sorry to be a douche on my end, too. Seems this season I get all jacked before gameday, ever since the big throw down I got into with the bosses wife before the Mizzou game.

That's a whole story if its own.

Anyway, can't wait to see our beloved Huskers push the wildcats around tomorrow.

Husker Power!

and about CU, yeah, I think an extra couple of days to prepare for the Huskers will be a help, but not so much if we are stronger and faster.

Posted by: Big Wave Dave on November 20, 2009 9:03AM CST
Well, seeing the Burkhead working with a real Fullback in front of him might be enjoyable viewing....

Ya think!

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on November 20, 2009 9:05AM CST
Let's hope that the I formation and play action passing continue as our offense. I never want to see the WCO again. It just isn't Nebraska football. Hopefully, the OL will get back to run blocking skills using this approach. Sure, the RBs like a FB in front of them. Who wouldn't? It suits Lee best for sure, and probably Green also. It is our best chance to win for the foreseeable future.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 20, 2009 9:07AM CST
We need to have our chinstraps buckled tomorrow.

If we keep the errors to a mimimun We can gradually put KSU away. they showed a great ability to come back against OU. No small task. However Mizzu buried them.

Dang this north division is confusing.

What are your plans before the game? I will be at the game, just no idea where yet. Have you talked to anyone on here and made plans to meet for a couple brews?

Posted by: husker@ksu on November 20, 2009 9:14AM CST
I know we are in the middle of the season, but i thought i would point out that in the recruiting of Aaron Green (Andrew's brother). He has said that he prefers to run behind a fullback one thing that many considered a disadvantage for NU to get his commitment.
Just one more reason I like seeing that fullback out there.

Posted by: BlackshirtBeado on November 20, 2009 9:21AM CST
What position does his bother Andrew play?

Also, I would surmise, that most RBs would appreciate the leadblocker. Almost a no brainer

Posted by: PT Husker on November 20, 2009 9:23AM CST
Trash, Not anything firm. Husker in Co. is going to be gating North of the tracks. some p;lace near a house that had a Mechanical bull. No idea were He is talking about.

My bro in law will be with me. I am leaving here about 10 AM. My options are open.

I may put a post on the main page.

Yeah, it's funny. Every time I see an I formation now I have a calm feeling come over me. When I see 3-4 receivers and single back set, I'm thinking, "Aw, $h1t."

PT
I agree. I believe if we rush for 150 and tie or win the turnover battle, we win. KSU has been as quirky as anybody, no matter how folks try to spin their rush defense. Sure, they've held Tenn Tech and TA&M ("Carrie," anyone) to minus rushing yards...but they've also given up some big rush totals, too. KSU gave up 739 yds offense (185 rushing) to Tex Tech (we gave 259 total). My point isn't that we're so much greater than KSU, but they can be had and aren't all world on defense.

The North division games are not for betting your paycheck...

Well, I have no idea how to get a hold of you. I suppose I could email you my phone number if you would like it.

I have no idea who will be with me or where were going yet besides the Champions Club probably the time your going to the stadium. I kind of had a larger group for the LITR party which is tough. Everyone wants to go somewhere else, keeping the group together, etc. gets kinda old. Hopefully four or less this week.

I'll be on and off here throughout the day until about 5-5:30ish. Then I'm out with the boys tonite. First time in a long time.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 20, 2009 9:39AM CST
That would be OK. Champions club would be fun. Kinda uppity for me but i might now a few folks there,

Whats the beer and brots cost? Send me the number and I will get in touch.

Posted by: Trashman on November 20, 2009 9:44AM CST
PT
It's really not that uppity in the lower level where the turds like me hangout. I would have to find you and wife? extra pass to get in there, which could be a possibility. Need to find out if my sister-in-law is coming and if she'll have any extra passes. Then it's not so bad. However, I really don't go there until 20-30 min before the game just to get a seat. It's not all that fun pre-game because everyone's at their vehicles drinking and eating.

I actually would prefer to just meet at a bar like Brewsky's or somewhere. I'll see what I can figure out before you leave tomm. Check the blog or email before you leave in the a.m.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 20, 2009 9:58AM CST
Brewskys would work for me as well. Kinda come and go as you see fit. What ever. I am flexible. Laters.
