Bo: The buck stops here
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on October 19, 2009 at 6:56PM CST
It was a candid Bo Pelini after Monday's practice. It's probably important to note that he was quite calm when he delivered the quotes below. He was in a pretty pleasant mood after a satisfying workout by his team.

"I don't panic," Pelini said. "I believe in what we're doing. I believe in the direction of this program and what we have going and I'm going to stay the course. I've learned that over time. That's up to you guys to panic. We don't do that. I don't get real high. I don't get real low. Everyone wanted to elevate us to we were the '85 Bears after beating Missouri. And I knew better. I'd watched the film. I knew there were some things that we needed to get addressed and that we needed to keep progressing as a football team. We didn't do that last Saturday. Now we need to do that this Saturday."

(In defense of the LJS staffers, I would note the only time we panic is when the press box buffet line stretches 10 people or longer.)

The coach was asked about what he thought about some of the booing on Saturday, and the chants for Cody Green to come into the game.

"Fans can say anything they want," Pelini said matter-of-factly. "When they earn the title of head coach, they can make the decisions. Until then, I'll make the decisions around here, along with Coach Watson and the rest of the coaching staff. They can boo me, they can say whatever the heck they want. They can choose to boo, they can do what they want. But we're going to do what we feel is necessary to win football games. Period. End of story. I don't get influenced by what the fans or the media or anybody else does. When they want to come in here and watch the film and they earn the title and earn the respect of being a head coach, they can start making the decisions. Until then, the buck stops here."

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 19, 2009 7:04PM CST
We are gonna have to figure out a way for Green to tone that rocket launcher down a tad.

On that ball that went through the D players hands and then CG dropped it.... he overthrew that guy by 30 yards... on a rope!

And you guys thought I was joking when I said he could toss it 90 yards.

Can we have an ABAM!!!! I like whats hes saying. Time to move on Husker nation...This saturday is approaching fast and we have to get ready....GBR PACT

not high or low. pelini's always on full boil - just as the refs and any player who fouled up on a play. wish he would direct that steam toward the o-line. know the count or go sit down.

Posted by: Inbread on October 19, 2009 7:08PM CST
BC, when it gets that long, just look around and yell "HEY, its Yasmine Bleeth in a bikini signing an autograph for TO!!!" When they all turn to look, head to the front of the line.....

Posted by: Dave on October 19, 2009 7:12PM CST
BAM is overplayed by all of the 12 year-olds on here. Oh well, at least they're reading something.

Posted by: Brian Christopherson on October 19, 2009 7:14PM CST
Wow. I haven't heard the name Yasmine Bleeth since I was in high school.

Posted by: Inbread on October 19, 2009 7:14PM CST
BAM-BAM was my favorite Flinstones character.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 19, 2009 7:17PM CST
There it is again! Another guy that lets the BAM!!! rule his life. He felt so compelled... that he had to post a negative BAM!!! post.

Don't let things rule your life. It's unhealthy. I'll bet Dave smokes cigs and drinks coffee also.

Posted by: Inbread on October 19, 2009 7:18PM CST
BC, with some of the other people in the press box, maybe you should try Ann MArgaret?

Posted by: bruNo on October 19, 2009 7:19PM CST
yea, yasmine bleeth seems like a real 'catch':

In September 2001, Bleeth was arrested after she crashed her car into a median, failed a sobriety test, and police found cocaine in her car. She was sentenced to two years probation, 100 hours of community service, and she had to submit to drug tests.

Good for Bo.

The fans can boo until they're blue in the lungs but it doesn't change the fact that at the end of the game they get to go home to their families and not have to worry about leading a football team week-in and week-out.

bruNo))) My pal was over here this norning reading the blog.

He said with a giggle... "this guy bruNo likes Watson? Is that your pal?"

I said "yeah... he's on there all the time."

We said... "what do you know about him?"

I said "nothing really... he likes movies and he's a Bears fan."

Then he said... "Oh.. no wonder. If he's a Bears fan he has no idea what offense is supposed to look like."

Is that true or false?

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on October 19, 2009 7:27PM CST
I hope that when Bo says "that the buck stops here" it applies to the QB situation. I hope that he doesn't go along with Watson and Lee to the bitter end. He is right about one thing. He is the head coach and has earned the right to make the decisions, not the fans or the media or anyone else. Solich found that out, but too late after years of avoiding the tough decisions. We will find out soon enough if Bo can back up the tough talk with positive results on the field. I think he can do it.

I just wish he would say, "The penalties stop here". That would make me happier. I really dont give a crap about BOOing. Fans paid the money for the tickets, and there is no law/rule against it. Is it tasteless? Yes, but so are a lot of things.

He's just this pal-o-mine from high school. He's a huge Bears fan. He from the lower East side of Chicago. Which makes him harder than a coffin nail.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 19, 2009 7:42PM CST
One last thing about the game.

This guy OHanlon is MURDERING me.

On that play where the ball was tipped up and caught on the 3rd and long on the first drive... this nerd OHanlon is flying by the guy looking for a pick.... meanwhile... everybody else is over at the ball... attacking it at it's highest point.

LAY THAT GUY OUT LIKE ANY OTHER S IN THE BIG12 WOULD!

Geez!

It's gonna be hard to win with OHanlon in there. I can't believe he's our second best S.

Where's....

M A S O N - W A L D

when you need him?

I like Knowshon Moreno. He's gonna be a good player.

It would be awesome if Bo just answered every question with BAM!!!

LJS --> Who will start at QB next week?

Bo --> BAM!!!

I think the broncs should mix in some of those pink cancer awareness gloves and shoes to round out their 'assemble'.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 19, 2009 7:47PM CST
Bo would say...

"You don't know who's gonna start at QB? Do you know this? BAM!!!"

Jackson ... I never feel sorry for the press! PERIOD!

Posted by: Busiekcreek on October 19, 2009 7:49PM CST
Never ever would I have thought I'd say this. Bo Pelini has lost his ever loving mind. The team is in shambles. The qb controversy is boiling, the booing has begun in the land of "the nation's best fans". He gets paid damn good money to take the heat. Sheesh, what a glorified denial of a mess.

Posted by: bruNo on October 19, 2009 7:50PM CST
what did they do, tear up a bunch of dead refs' shirts to make those socks?

I don't care how good or respectable a reporter is. They take the good with the bad.

They see every game for free and have access to all kinds of places many of us will never see. All they have to put up with is a grumpy head coach and get their articles in on time? Sign me up.

8 man blitz by the Broncos. lol

I'll bet the Chargers weren't expecting that.

Posted by: Inbread on October 19, 2009 7:53PM CST
Busie, it is a LOT less of a mess then it was after the MEthzoo game last year. At least we have a D this year. Last year we had a mediocre D (at best) with a good O. This year we have a good D and a mediocre O. And I dont dismiss us losing 2 of our top 3 running backs either. They were both CLEAR number twos for a reason. Relax, we will be OK.

Posted by: TheNUorder on October 19, 2009 7:54PM CST
Well, I for one am crushed by Bo's comments. I really believed that he and his staff were taking our input from this blog to determine the starting lineup and the plays to call. To find out he isn't influenced by our wisdon and recommendations is more than I can handle. Bo Bo tell me it's not so!!

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 19, 2009 7:57PM CST
Everybody knows Bo gets his idears from the LJS blog. HE just can't say that.

He also recruits from the internet. Thats why we average 3.9 *'s per player.

Unless the recruiting services and Bo just happen to like the same players.... Bo recruits on the internet.

Posted by: bruNo on October 19, 2009 7:58PM CST
seriously, do you have to go 4 yrs of school to be a reporter? I bet I could have it down pat within 1-2 months of on the job training..lol.

Guys, I know I have been MIA since the game. No, it's not because we lost, though I was not happy with the game. But I was ill most ot the weekend, got worse Sunday, and today was diagnosed with the H1N1 flu. Not fun. I have been relegated to home rest, more medication, can't go out in public until Friday. Kind of like an house arrest. I am pretty sick. So I will not be posting much for several days, hopefully as I get feeling better I will be the LITR more. Keep the faith guys. And keep cheering our Huskers on, win or lose.

Didn't detect arrogance in Pelini.....I think he's doing as he's done throughout his career, that is deflecting criticism his way and off his staff and players.

Last season after the blowout loss to Mizzou, the offense altered what it was doing to take advantage of it's strengths. Don't underestimate this staff to do something similar again.

Saw a word that said they were doing more power sets in practice today. Bo is not clueless and knows that our quarterback/receiver combos are not getting it done. Just a hunch, but look for more power sets this Saturday.

I want to see C Green out there as much as the next guy, but I also saw the reads he made against Texas Tech.....and for the most part they were not that great. He does have a great pocket presence, but his decision making was that of inexperience at this level of play.

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 19, 2009 9:28PM CST
Islander,

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 19, 2009 9:32PM CST
Big Red Glory,

Did you bet money on the game? Is this personal to you? You seem to really be angry with coach Pelini.

Posted by: Tadow on October 19, 2009 9:33PM CST

Damn....I really love Bo Pelini as head coach, and believe the majority of the coaching pieces are in place.

But this really rubs me the wrong way. Most of the comment is spot on, but these two things really do not come out good in print:

1) "When they want to come in here and watch the film and they earn the title and earn the respect of being a head coach, they can start making the decisions."

2) "When they earn the title of head coach, they can make the decisions."

Just reading it, it would seem as if he is really under some pressure right now.

We are behind you Bo, but make no mistake...you and your kind (football coaches) are millionaires because of fans like us. Your family lives a better life than the majority of the people who you are talking to here.

You are a great coach, and I will support you until the end....but show a little humility...just a little.

Something like "I know football is important to the people of Nebraska, and I want them to know I will make the right decisions to bring us back. I recognize that Saturday was a train-wreck, and my days and nights are consumed with fixing the problems on the field."

We all have our opinions, and express them more as an outlet then anything else. We trust you to make the correct decision...

I would recommend you stop marginalizing the people that support you...

GO BIG RED.

Big Red Glory,

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I think that the coaching staff is trying to do the best they can do. I would guess that the entire coaching staff was blindsided by what occured this past Saturday just as all of the fans were.

Posted by: JayBr on October 19, 2009 9:58PM CST
Big Red Glory....I appreciate your compliment of my post and understand where you are coming from also. He threw a great touchdown pass and, like I said, showed great pocket presence. With that said, he also completed less than half his passes and was very close to throwing two interceptions. Imagine what might happen if he makes a bad read or two in the first quarter and Iowa State immediately converts the turnover into points. That's all I meant by his inexperience showing.

Posted by: Albino on October 19, 2009 10:03PM CST
JayBr,

If Cody threw two picks for two TDs in the first qtr with the clones, we'd all be horrified. But he'd reach inside and take control of the game.

I am curious what everyone here thinks.

When the fans were booing were they booing the players, the call that was made, both or something else?

Posted by: Albino on October 19, 2009 10:07PM CST
They were primarily booing the refs. Some may have been booing the play calling. None were booing the players.

Posted by: bruNo on October 19, 2009 10:10PM CST
geez, some of the NE FAN is acting like the apocalypse is at hand, it's just one loss, yea it was ugly but the D played very well again and they have to get the QB thing and offense in order.

NE FAN is so spoiled.

ALERT!: We are going to win more games....probably a good majority of them, so just chill out a bit and let up on BO & Co.

ty in advance ;)

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 19, 2009 10:18PM CST
Albino,

I agree with you. You can see that Cody has something that many do not. He is not a quiter and will find a way to win. I know that he is young and does not have a lot of experience and will absolutely create a turnover or two.

I also know that all of the great ones do exactly that. They then pick themselves up, dust themselves off and go out and make plays.

We will see what happens when it happens. We have two games coming up before it gets really tough again.

Lee should be able to handle Iowa State and Baylor. I suspect that he may have some issues with the last four games.

My opinion is that Green will have some problems with Iowa State as well as Baylor here and there but will come of age quickly and perform very well throughout the rest of the season.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 19, 2009 10:22PM CST
IMO Bo has changed for the good. He is nowhere near as excitable as last year. The only thing that has happened is we are coming back to earth. We got ourselves wrongly convinced that this team was great. Not yet but we don't want to accept that. It is 1.5 years into a restoration project. Yet here we are harping about whether coach is a politician or not. Last timeI checked he was not running for ofice. although a month ago he might have won. I know we all love what he has done in a short time. this offense has struggled against better competition. Will Bo and Wats fix it. Maybe, Maybe not. Not this year anyway. But we are gaining boys. We are gaining.

and as this is the only blog I frequent I don't know but I would bet this is not unique. But again, I am somewhat idealistic.

Posted by: bruNo on October 19, 2009 10:22PM CST
Yea, we're spoiled, but ya gotta have some perspective too. We all thought the O would be doing better, not a finished product necessarily, but better, against good teams.

Well, we aren't and that's reality and we'rre breaking in a new QB and he isn't getting it done yet.

I just think NE FAN's general tendency toward spoiled overaction is fairly immature.

However, IF we happen to lose to either ISU or Baylor, or both, you might as well put me in diapers cuz I will be among the loudest crybabys here, LOL!

What I do know is when that kid walked on the field, I could feel it 1200 plus miles down the road. He has it. May take a while and some dings to polish him up. Cody, I'm with you fellow and just maybe one day you will get to hold that crystal football up for all the country to see.

Guess we told em Huh Bru. He He He.

Posted by: bruNo on October 19, 2009 10:30PM CST
Why don't they get Green in the mix, ala Tebow style, let him run mostly, and see if Lee starts to improve at all as the main guy.

Let Green throw some passes too while he's in their, but I say he should be running the ball mostly right now, i.e., read option, wildcat, wtevr...

Posted by: bruNo on October 19, 2009 10:31PM CST
who did we tell, PT?

Posted by: PT Husker on October 19, 2009 10:32PM CST
BTW, I am totally in Greens camp right now. But I will support what ever decision the coaches make. Lees' leach is short. If he starts he will have to get it done. That much should be obvious.

And the Broncos are gonna win this thing.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 19, 2009 10:34PM CST
Don't know but we told em anyway.

Posted by: Albino on October 19, 2009 10:36PM CST
Fair enuf, Bruno.

Early in the Sunbelt season I was disappointed in the D, and wondering how the offense could be more mature. So I'm not surprised that a new QB has problems. I just hoped that we would have worked through it sooner.

Crap, even Jimmy Clausen was had to learn the ropes for a few yrs and look at him now. The QB position is no easy deal, it takes some time, I guess I still have some faith in Lee right now.

Yea, Green is a stud, it's obvious, but his passing is still real rough around the egdes. IF he is made the starter the offense needs to be running the ball at least 2/3 of the time, we have to run the ball, but some us have been saying that since last spring so it's belaboring the point.

albino,

agree, I would've expected the O to be doing better too, absolutely.

I dunno, maybe they are not too far off, I mean they did move the ball against VT and had 5 trips to the redzone vs TT, but just keep shooting themselves in the foot.

Overall, our team has way too many costly penalties and thats gotta stop, like yesterday.

well, if they do make Green the starter I'm behind him 100% and will take every INT with a grain of salt knowing he's in a learning curve. Just hope they let him run.

In sips article it sounds like Bo is opening it up for armchair QB's to come take a shot at coaching.

Crap, I'll come scheme up some run plays for them if they want.

I'll even go no pads against Suh and demonstrate how a lead back blocks a D lineman. Then I'll pick my shoulder up off the ground with the arm that's still attached and say, "that's how you hit someone boys"

Man that'd be fun...for about a minute.

Posted by: bruNo on October 19, 2009 11:01PM CST
wow, it just sorta sank in that OU drooped outta the top 25 AP. Been prolly about 10+ yrs since thats happened. Bet their fans are going nuts, will have to read some of their blogs this week...

Posted by: Albino on October 19, 2009 11:04PM CST
I agree that the O may be close. Smallish improvements in four related areas, such as: 1) balance between run & pass (requires a QB who can run so RB has openings), 2) quicker QB release so the OL doesn't have to hold so long, 3) identify receivers who can separate and catch (bullets), and 4) gradual improvement in OL technique. Green gives the first two, scrambles 3 and contributes to 4. Should be interesting.

The good news:
I was able to connect in Denver today uneventful.
No phony child in a balloon events to impede
the movement as I returned home from the game
with my tail between my legs.

The bad news: You know. Also, the crowd in my area was not booing. Just quiet and stunned, but didn't seem surprised.

Oh well, there's more important stuff out there like I/H getting over H1N1.

Big Red Glory....thank you again. You are right, while I read this blog a bit, I don't choose to participate all that often. I get as upset as anyone after a bad loss, but I've got a lot of patience for B Pelini to do things his way, knowing there will be plenty of bumps along the way.
I have several really really bad memories from the Callahan era.....Texas Tech 70, Nebraska 10 being one of them. Okie Lite 38, Nebraska 0 at halftime being another. Because of this, I am very tolerant of Pelini's style.
Pelini gets some slack from his style with the media, but I remember fans used to get mad at Solich and Callahan for their press conferences as well, so I really don't care about the whole Bo and the media thing. The media has to make things seem a little more radical than it really is because many readers seem to want that.
I really do want C Green to step forward as the starter, but we have to understand that the result can go either way and truly be able to accept that.
Our offense is performing poorly, but I believe that no one is more bothered by this than Bo Pelini. I don't see him taking this lightly.

The Buck stops with Bo. Is that a buck O 9? What would you do?

Posted by: OregonHusker on October 19, 2009 11:56PM CST
First post...

I'm sad about the booing. I have Duck season tickets and have been giving my buddies a hard time about the Oregon fans booing...both the other teams and sometimes our own team. "Nebraska fans don't do that kind of stuff" I'll say...Proud of my Huskers and proud of the kind of fans we have.

I wished Bo had said "They can choose to boo, but true Nebraska fans won't boo their own team."

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 20, 2009 12:00AM CST
I agree Oregon,
Booing is stupid. ignorant.

Posted by: JayBr on October 20, 2009 12:04AM CST
One other comment about the Texas Tech game....
I think the Texas Tech game will specifically benefit Dennard & Amakamura. They both made mistakes that I think will be great teaching tools in regard to technique and the consistency that it takes to be an elite corner in the B12. They both have great talent and I think (or maybe it's hope) that they can learn a lot from this game. Our corners are our athletes in the secondary while we develop the talent at safety. I appreciate Asante's aggressiveness, but for whatever reason he has a hard time hanging on to potential interceptions. He's been in position to be among the league leaders in that category.

Posted by: Albino on October 20, 2009 12:05AM CST
They weren't booing the players.

Posted by: OregonHusker on October 20, 2009 12:31AM CST
I'd like to believe they were booing at the refs as you said in your previous post.

Watching the game with a bunch of friends...and with the benefit of a DVR...everyone in the room felt like the team was being booed at numerous times. One of the more notable times was as the team entered the tunnel at halftime...and Bo turned to look. His statement certainly makes it clear that he felt the booing was directed at the coaches and team. Embarrassing.

Posted by: Guido on October 20, 2009 12:34AM CST
Albino is correct. The fans were not booing the players at the end of the first half. They were booing the poor execution of the brilliantly called plays. Yeah - that's the ticket!

Personally, I really don't care what they were booing. It was a pathetic first half performance and fans voicing their displeasure can be somewhat expected. After all, this is the team that regardless of wins and losses has always put forth the effort for Bo and his staff. That was not what I saw on Saturday.

But, I seem to recall a previous post of mine where I mentioned that this was "supposed" to be a 8 or 9 win team this year (per Las Vegas oddsmakers). So, they are right on pace. I expect too a goof effort on Saturday regardless of who is the QB or who is the RB/IB.

Posted by: Guido on October 20, 2009 12:38AM CST
maybe I should proofread better

... I expect to see a good effort ...

Posted by: Albino on October 20, 2009 12:50AM CST
Brian Christianson was very speciic that the booing at half-time was directed at the refs, as they left the field. It surprised Bo, but that doesn't mean that Brian was wrong.

I don't doubt that there was some booing of play calling in the second half, but I see no reason to think the players were the target.

Posted by: Uncle Fester on October 20, 2009 2:53AM CST
Albino - Brian Christianson's statement that the booing was directed at the refs is stricken as hearsay, because that is what it is.

I've gone through all the emotions as everyone else and have been thoroughly tested to keep my mouth shut while in such a mood, because history has taught me that is the best policy for me--I have less to regret.

This is the 2nd year of the communist--strike that--Pelini 5 year plan. I have a dream! A land flowing with milk and honey! 2 touchdown victories in Austin! Groveling Big 12 North sniveling opponents! I have a dream! Spanking Leach in Lubbock! Praise Pelini! Demonstrating suffocating defense in a dominating victory in Norman! Yes, I have a dream! I have been to the mountain top, and I have seen the promised land!

Yes, there will trials and insufferable tribulations along the way. Losing four times in a row to Leach. Inability to beat teams with winning records on their home field. On occasion, a spastic offense. Punt returners who don't know they are supposed to catch the ball. Wide receivers who (censored). Offensive coordinators who are second-guessed. Impatient fans. But I believe in Bo. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

As irritating as the TT loss was (and I spent $24 to watch it way out here on pay per view--you think you got hosed?), compared to 2 years ago at this time, there is a dawning in Nebraska. This is the year that the team realizes it can play with anybody, even though that lesson will come sometimes at great expense--such as TT. If knuckleheads like all of us can see what happened, just think what the players saw when they looked at the film. How did you feel when you knew that you totally screwed up in front of the world and everyone knew it? You don't need anyone in those circumstances to say a word to you; you know what to do. Now, if bad things happen in the next game...Katie, bar the door.

Nonetheless, three years from today, in year 5 of the Pelini era, no one will want to play Nebraska. In Bo I still trust.

And to StepNRazor I give a hat's off. Too much of what you post goes way over too many people's heads. Not mine, of course.

And in his spirit, I claim for the first time in LSJ history the first post at number 100 whatever the immortal

BAM!! BAM!! Two for one. I'd do more, but I'm not up to Step' s level yet, although I have ambitions. Hey, how come he's supposed to know so much about recruiting, anyway?

In Bo I trust. GBR.

Insomnia strikes again! For years & years the RED was able to overcome the zebras! Noted exceptions '93/'94 OBowl vs FSu & Peee St. '82. I think, since we've won more games since '70 (26 more than the nxt team), that there is a tangible bias amongst the refing community against DONU! On another note, start Green, see how it goes. Bring in Lee if he struggles. Remember '92 vs. Iowa St. Tommie F. & the Huskers lost 19 -10!

The buck stops here on the international currency exchange the buck is losing value? So supporting his staff overtly is expected and Coach Bo is a wonderful coach in many ways albeit for me to criticize him exactly? But he is only in his 2nd season as HC, he will have to learn a little more tact I suppose in dealing with his fan base for the future? It is not us against them type of attitude or demeanor that is very ingratiating to his fan base or constituency of support? As a football coach I give him high marks as a charmer and PR guy I think he will need to grow some in his new position as HC, as I am sure TO will groom in these areas that take some experiences of situational concerns? No better person to groom him into a more polished future HC, than TO one of the greatest of all times in college football! We are in good hands with Coach Bo and his staff and his mentor TO for the future to come this I am completely sure of as no offense to those employed by this company, but Huskernation is better than Allstate for being secure? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Thanks for the comments about my new dog. My other puppy is so cute. This one (Big Red) means business and gets very noisy at times. Look at his face, he ain't smiling!

Everyone that has read my comments over the last year and a half knows that my comments remain fairly consistent and to the point. What we are starting to see now is the beginning. This is a critical point in time. Real leaders recognize the need for change and pretenders curl up into a ball and start attacking those that want him to succeed.

You can listen to all of the ra ra talk, I will fix this and I will fix that, the buck stops with me talk. Bo is going to find out the hard way that a head coach earns his respect from those he doesn't control. He can kick players off of the team and he can fire his staff. He has absolutely no control over those that he doesn't coach or evaluate.

In the end, all of those other people he just snubbed his nose at matter too. Those are just hollow words until we see a change. Now, does anyone really think the coaching staff had a big pow wow yesterday and burned the 300 play (Pass First Attack) playbook in a bon fire on the grass practice field? Of course they didn't. They don't go outside! Someone may get a peek at their secret weapons. He thinks this problem can be fixed by looking at more game film apparently.

This is developing into a problem that can't be fixed by additional coaching up of players. It is a flawed offensive scheme. At some point in time, someone that has really earned the respect of all Nebraskan's will say something to him and then someone's over blown ego is going to be hurt. When an highly emotional person that can't control adversity very well hears it, it will be too late.

A first time head coach that has "earned the title" of head head coach then may start saying stupid things like " I am doing an excellent job in all areas" or maybe like the type of things he said above in the news conference yesterday.

We just want to watch decent football around here and we are not getting it. NU has only won one of its tougher games in the last 19 games and that was something that very seldom happens in football. It was the first time ever for NU I believe (27 unanswered points in the 4th quarter).

When a coach comes out and says goofy things like he said above, what does he say the next time it happens. The head coach is responsible for the whole team and not just the defense. He was screwing around with the blackshirts for 5 games and his full attention should have been on the offense all along. The players get it Bo, they know you are the coach. Isn't his brother the DC and being paid to coach the defense?

Get it together Bo and thanks for saying you don't care what the fans have to say. You may hear a lot more from them.
GBR

Weren't we the same fans that cried because Callisham didn't show enough emotion? Now we finally get a coach who speaks his mind and has all the passion in the world and really cares about our team, and we cry about that? What's wrong with you people? I personally love Bo's attitude. Now I know some of you, like no nothing and others will crucify me for saying that but like Bo says, I really don't care.

"Hickman has so much to say about him and the rest of this line...I don't see him grabbing anyone by the facemask...or grabbing someone by the shoulder and saying "Hey FOCUS! Let's get it together" Where's the passion...."

Yelling and screaming is not the same thing as leadership. It works for Bo because that's the type of person he is. If that's not Hickman's personality, then it won't work because nobody would buy it. Tom Osborne wasn't an emotional guy, but would anyone say he wasn't a great leader?

Just because Hickman's not grabbing people by the facemask doesn't mean he's not passionate, it just means he's not as demonstrative about it.

It sounds to me you'd like him to get mad and stomp around to make you feel better.

Posted by: HuskerzVA on October 20, 2009 7:27AM CST
festusmonroe - If Hickman did stomp around and get mad then he would be accused of being to emotional and he needs to control himself. You just can't please everyone.

No nothing....first, I am as disappointed in the Texas Tech game as you are. Last season when things did not go well offensively, some changes were made. Let's give Pelini enough credit that he has the experience to do something like that this year.
I am a fan, and do not feel in the least bit snubbed by Pelini. I am thankful he is our coach. My memory is not so short that I can't remember the Callahan era. As far as things that get said to the media, Husker fans griped about Frank Solich and Bill Callahan too.
I'm OK with how Pelini handles the media. It will probably continue to mellow as he gets more experience, but perhaps not.
Pelini is from the defensive side of the ball. Can you imagine if Charlie McBride faced the media every day?

Posted by: HuskerzVA on October 20, 2009 7:41AM CST

Part of being a leader is doing what you think is right and not worrying about things you can't control, such as fans' opinions. It also means saying no to people, even when they're trying to help.

It's tough to do. That's why true leaders are hard to find. Nebraska is lucky enough to have one.

TO "father time"
talks to "sophmore head coach" about
"senior assistant coach" teaching
"Junior qb" to lead team while-
"fr qb looks in trying to learn ????

Bo maybe the "Sophmore Jinx" is creeping in?

When I met my Nebr born wife, I was a stout Michigan State Fan. Duffy Daugherty had replaced Biggie Munn and he had an assistant named, You Guessed It: Bob Devaney. Told her that the Huskers who were winning about 2 games a year and drawing a couple of thousand fans could use a Michigan Coach. They tried some others and when BD replaced Jennings, one of the ex-huskers told me that Jennings knew football, but that they would fight for BD. Sound familiar ???

HuskerVA, TomOs, Festusmonroe....Good stuff!! In Bo, we have exactly what we've been asking for.
I also think these posts like "Tom needs to sit Bo down and talk with him" are just hilarious. Tom hired Bo, and Tom recommended that Bo retain Watson (at least for now).
I am sure of two other things....1) Bo did not expect the offense to be performing this way...2) In the long run, Bo will not put up with the offense running this way.

Posted by: JayBr on October 20, 2009 8:53AM CST
Otto....are you referring to the same TO that people screamed should be fired because his schemes weren't working and he wasn't as vocal as Devaney?

Back when there was no blog, the coaches just did their best, without our help, based on their experience, knowledge and leadership ability. Sometimes it wasn't sufficient. Re: 1957 when we had 1 win and were shut out 4 times.

RU sure about that JayBR? I was under the impression that Bo selected his own staff. I did not realize TO recommend he keep Watson on staff. When HWMNBN came, I thought he should have kept Bo as the DC. I did not cry, but I do remember Bo leaving that night in his SUV. To me, it was like the WTC strikes. I was stunned that anybody would fire Bo after what he had done with a hapless defense in one year. If Mr. Watson leaves, who does Bo pick to be OC? Any OC would have different styles or offenses. That means two years before the offense could recover and the new OC gets his type of players in. Can Bo withstand the firestorm that would create? Just rambling as I tend to do.

There will probably never be another coach like T.O. He was the best that any program could hope for. We all owe him a tremdous amount of gratitude for not leaving us when so many could only criticize his efforts. Shame on us looking back.

However, those of us old enough to know what I am referring to also recall the catalyst that allowed T.O. to go from a great coach to the best coach. It took him a long time to get there as we all know...seemed like forever at the time.

Ironically the issues of long ago are almost a mirrored problem that we are facing today. T.O. had mastered the offensive game plan. He could do more with less on offense than arguably any other coach. His issues were clearly with the defense.

I don't know what happened or what triggered him to look for a better solution but I do know that the solution that he sought out and eventually chose was the right one.

Both T.O. and Pelini were, are and will continue to be passionate about football. One kept it to himself. One does not hesitate to express his anger.

Opposite personalities. Opposite issues. Probably opposite solutions the the problem. Hopefully the same result.

We are spoiled. We need to sit back and let Bo do his job and refrain from the torturous rhetoric that so many of us, not so long ago, regret having spewed on another coach by the name of Tom Osborne.

I am probably crazy. this must be a different Shawn Watson than we had last year. That guy took a struggling offense, tweaked a few things, had a chat with a player or two and fixed it. He was our hero. This Shawn Watson has a crappy s;cheme, is stubborn and unflexible.

Funny thing is they both wear Cowboy boots. Gee bloggers, (our some of you) have me really confused

This coaching staff is a great unit, with a great leader, working with marginal talent and trying to get things fixed.

Yes the same TO, this time he has more "wisdom" to talk cause he's been to Congress, got all the right answers to the everyday problems of average husker fan nation , ect,& ect, plus he doesn't want to hear from the fans (voters) himself, get it Bo?

Posted by: sdhusker on October 20, 2009 9:33AM CST
have to say, I am becoming a little turned off by some of the latest comments by Bo. He may carry the title of head coach, but us fans are a big reason for the success of the team, and his position. The quotes about blackshirts and the buck stops here, I feel are a little disrespectful to the fans and the tradition of Husker football. Understand this Bo, we fans support you and the team but we have expectations for our loyalty. Respect us, our traditions, and the Nebraska culture; we've been around a lot longer and deserve better. Take a lesson from Coach Osborne, handle yourself with class and humility, show a little self discipline and you may see that reflect in your team Head Coach.

How quick we turn.

sdhusker. Perhaps we should give some of what we expect to receive. Perhaps some tolerance on our part is also necessary. IMO the street runs both directions. Yes he is abrupt. And yest he does not appreciate inane questions. And his remarks about us probably would have been better left unsaid.

But he has not changed much. The only thing I see that is different is 3 three lackluster offensive performances. Prior to those games we,(or some of us) loved his "take no prisonors" attitude. Now not so much. His honeymoom may be ending but I hope he stays married to us for the long haul.

Nice post bleedingred
some of the folks need to stop acting like a bunch of babies. Before Bo got pi$$ed he had asked the refs for an explaination of the call and was not acknowledged by said offical. Now I'm sure some of you bloggers (based on your post) would reach the boiling point also.

Im not "turning", just think Bo may need to check himself. Still love the guy, think he is doing a great job with what he was given. He needs to be careful in choosing his words, as well as his OC. Callahan didnt do himself any favors by standing by Cosgrove as the defense stunk it up.....of course, this is all just my ill-informed opinion looking from the outside in.

The "DOG" has been a fan since 50's when my parents bought 3 season tickets in W. Stadium. Tippy Dye, was the AD that hired Bobby D. who was coaching @ Wyo. As they say, the rest is history! This info is for the "new breeds" on this site. On another note, start Green, if he's struggling after a few series, bring in Lee. Somethings not "clicking" on the "O"!!! Remember '92 - Tommie F. & the RED lost 19 - 10 @ Iowa ST. Clones had T-shirts w/that score - saying "THERE IS A GOD"!

Personally, I love Bo's fire. Keep the fire burning Bo and don't let up!

Huskerzone....the answer is yes to both. Bo selected his own staff and TO was thumbs up for Watson.
HuskerVa.....great comment about this blog!
Otto....so you are associating going to congress with gaining wisdom??

sdhusker. Don't take me wrong. I think bo takes these losses much harder tha we do but I do agree that over time he needs to learn that all this junk is part of the job. Can't argue that one little bit.

And Personally, I think we need to back off of Watson also. His talent is limited and some of what he had either is injured or got kicked off the team. We all want a running game. But it is painfully obvious that we aren't gonna have one anytime soon. Our Oline has a habit of making mistakes at critical times. (Head cases if you ask Me). Or we let a lateral lay on the ground until the other team deciedes to pick it up and score. We can move the ball so IMO it is not the Scheme. (but i might get an arguement about that).

In any event, We are all huskers here. We just express ourselves in many differnet ways.

Patience is a virtue. And like all virtues, it is sometimes hard to live by.

OK I am done being Philisophical. Let hang 40 on I State and Baylor. Bring on OU. Gun are gonna blaze.

Posted by: sdhusker on October 20, 2009 10:44AM CST
As far as the Oline is concerned, I dont think they are as bad as they have been made out to be. I think they are just being hog tied in a scheme that doesnt allow them to be the aggressors. Perhaps if they emphasized a power game, the O line would remember why God made them 6'6" and 315lbs and playing for his beloved Huskers. “WE WANT BIG KIDS WHO LIKE TO HIT PEOPLE” by Bob Devaney

I wouldnt go so far as asking for the option back...well maybe an occasional option play. I would love to see the I formation and Power I, throw in some play action passes.....you know real football. Something that will compliment the Defensive style of play. Those in favor of kicking someone in the teeth say "AYE"

I don't believe it is the system or the OC or the Offensive line or the QB or individually any thing else.

Each componant has the ability to affect the other i.e. a QB who can't or won't pull the trigger makes the o-line look bad by taking sacks and the system look ineffective.
Or is it the receivers who are not getting separation and giving their QB no target or dropping balls on him?
Is the o-line not opening holes or is it our starting running back is beat up and that our top backup is lost for the season? Or is the OC not calling run plays or is our QB audibleing out of the called runs?
I just don't think you can pull out one thing and hold it up and say "here is the problem" There appears to be plenty of adversity to go around. Just have to trust that we got the right people in place to fix it.
In perspective the only goal that is gone now is the national title. The North, the conference and the BCS are all still in play if we can right the ship. JMO

Sorry, I just felt the need to respond to that. On Bo...he is saying exactly what he should say at this point. That said, the fact that he is addressing what is being said by fans means that it has been addressed to him by someone. There is nothing to worry about here on the coaching front. Honestly we most likely have a case of Bo and Wats wanting to protect both Lee and Green, it's just reached a point where that is no longer possible and they will have to let the chips fall where they may. Keep the faith, adjustments will be made, we are on the right track in the larger scheme of things in regard to the program.

I'm glad u said what ya said. we are down to the 3rd string running back. Using WR's that have very little game experiance, (I can't give them a pass)they just don't seem to be working hard enough to get open. Started the season without one of the best O linemen J Burks. New special team snapper & holder. With some of that said we were suppose to win the NC this year or bust.

One other thing that occurs to me. Remember before the season both Bo and Wats commented that Zac might be "too confident" in his abilities to make throws. That he was willing to try and make things happen by making throws that were too risky. It seems to me that they now have him in a too careful; "don't make the big mistake", "just manage the game" frame of mind. If he is timid it seems to me they are just getting what they asked for. Maybe they should try and reinstill a little of that "gunslinger" mentality that he used to have. You can't school the kid to play safe and then be surprised when he loses confidence. Just a thought for consideration by you all.

you are on spot here. they also made mention after the spring game that Zac had to work on staying in the pocket longer & not running as much. there are things that we don't even know about.

I agree Jackson1...mostly. I dont agree with the "we dont have the talent to match up". TO never had great recruiting classes full of elite talent, Boise St. didnt become who they are now because they had great talent, same with Cinncinati. TO's teams were great because they had a proven scheme that was coached well. They beat more talented teams because they do what works best with what they have and they do it above average. Even Mike Leach, as quoted by Bo, does not do anything too complicated they just do what they do at a high level. These complex schemes like the WCO are not necessary to win. People knew what TO was going to do, but they couldnt stop it because our team just did it so well....with less talented players.

What the "H" happened on that lateral? Don't the coaches tell the players that if the ball isn't caught, its a free ball! Did they think it was an incomplete forward pass? Only the QB, I think, gave chase. Everyone else stood around! Could that play been reviewed? If it could - WHY NOT - it was returned for a TD!!! Obviously the Big Red legions have been spoiled by success - more wins, in D1 football since '70, than anyone! Next team is "26" W's behind DONU!!!
