Bo: Flu not an issue
Posted by: Brian Rosenthal on October 6, 2009 at 6:01PM CST

Roy Helu didn't practice Tuesday, but Bo Pelini was quick to nip rumors of a flu bug spreading through the team.

“There are no issues like that," Pelini said. "That’s news to me.”

 As for Helu?

"Roy wasn’t feeling well today but he’s fine. He could’ve practiced.”

Pelini said Helu wasn't going to practice regardless because he "and a couple of other guys" had to miss practice for academic priorities.

Brian

Thanks for squashing this quickly I appreciate your quick response on this concern!

Posted by: no nothing on October 6, 2009 6:14PM CST
So is he sick and fine now or is it a academic issue?

Do they fly to Columbia or take a bus. Do they leave tomorrow? The semi was loading stuff yesterday it appeared.

Didn't he just say that Helu and some others had to miss practice for academic reasons?

That's what I read.

Posted by: Father of future Husker on October 6, 2009 6:21PM CST
maybe they had to take tests today because they were going to miss class on Thursday because of something they had scheduled Thursday night...

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on October 6, 2009 6:22PM CST
I guess we will know more tomorrow when the team flies to Missouri.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 6, 2009 6:23PM CST
Here we go again. Reading things into things. Academic reasons could mean anything. Perhaps making up work before they leave.

Mountians out of molehills.

Posted by: "huskersRback" on October 6, 2009 6:25PM CST
If flu is the issue--who are all Helu's back-ups (active)?

Posted by: Busiekcreek on October 6, 2009 6:27PM CST
Low Country:
As Islander is our conscience
PT is the tail twister
Gofor2 handles medical issues
rluben always the enforcer
GBRinTx resolves coaching points
Step has the recruiting division
Bruno is the court jester

As the female red-headed LSU stepchild of this outfit, I hereby declare your avatar to be the ugliest thing I have ever seen. Please, give us scenery, cartoons, anything but what you now have. Your mug kicked back in a Pawley's Island hammock would be good for starters.

But Busie GF in HK called me CUTE!

Posted by: Huskerville_50 on October 6, 2009 6:30PM CST
The closer this game gets the more excited/nervous I get... This game will tell you alot about how our season will go.. A swing game for sure, we win we possibly finish the regular season 11-1 or 10-2, we lose and it could be hard to rebound to finish will 2 loses this year..

I think its important to make sure Helu sees the ball early and often... Keep Lee at about 25 attempts this game and ease him into it with short easy passes and please get McNeill the ball... I've also got a good feeling about Burkhead in this game, got a feeling he could really build off the good game he had against ULL and I don't think the kid is intimidated by anyone..

The biggest concern for me in this game by far is our secondary... They haven't done enough this year to prove to me that they can stop a passing offense like Missouri has... I feel they are capable but it is still to be seen... A distant 2nd concern of mine is definitely the play of Zac Lee.. I know VT has about as good a D as you'll see but his poor performance still worries me a little bit, having said that I fully expect him to perform well against a, what seems to be, subpar defense in Missouri...

GBR!!!

Posted by: Low Country Husker on October 6, 2009 6:32PM CST
Okay Busie just for you I changed my avatar to get you excited.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 6, 2009 6:33PM CST
Rex, Burkhead, Rex burkhead. That's 3. need any more.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on October 6, 2009 6:37PM CST
With the way MU plays the run I think we could use any of our backs and still get good production. However, experience is huge when playing on the road. Good to hear no Flu. I agree that the secondary is of some concern, especailly the way the MU receivers agressively go after the football.

Posted by: Busiekcreek on October 6, 2009 6:38PM CST
Thx, my sensibilities are sated

Posted by: Brian Rosenthal on October 6, 2009 6:38PM CST
OK, I'm changing the blog to clarify: Helu and others had academic priorities ... they're not in trouble academically.

Posted by: Huskerville_50 on October 6, 2009 6:40PM CST
Denario Alexander is a stud.. Hes a big boy and will be alot to handle... They don't have a real good tight end like in years past so that will help.. And although their RB Washington has been struggling I'd still make sure hes in check, wouldn't want his breakout game to come against us..

Posted by: Busiekcreek on October 6, 2009 6:41PM CST
Thx Brian, had you not clarified this issue, 3/4 of the team would be about to be kicked out of DONU by 9:00 p.m. (if this thread runs that long)

Posted by: Huskerville_50 on October 6, 2009 6:46PM CST
Missouri's O-Line is supposedly weak this year, it would be ideal to get enough pressure on Gabbert with the front four... We do that and this game would get alot easier..

Posted by: MileHiHusker on October 6, 2009 6:48PM CST
no nothing,
They are flying. Not to be confused with flu.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on October 6, 2009 6:57PM CST
With the Thursday game, juggling classes is more difficult. Hickman said that he has a test coming up on Friday, so the Thursday game makes preparation for the test more challenging. I think he said he also has an early class on Friday. So the late game and flight back will make it a very short night. I am sure he is not the only one. Priorities, Priorities, the life of the student-athlete.

ARE YOU READY? HOKEY POKEY!!!

Posted by: Mr HH on October 6, 2009 7:05PM CST
Helu's health not a problem. LOL, remember Zac Lee broke his thumb and what did BO call it? Anyway, just rub some dirt on it! ;)

Posted by: huskers4_eva on October 6, 2009 7:06PM CST
whats up with this tyler gabbert commitment stuff.

66-0. NU.

Suck it.

Posted by: Sabado Gigante on October 6, 2009 7:34PM CST
If T Gabb decommits, I'mma be pissed.

We stopped recruiting Sean Robinson as a result, and that kid has "Beast" written all over him. If we made an "only one QB" committment to him, that pu... KID better follow through.

Frankly, I'm offended that after offering him that promise, considering what the family has done previously, that he'd even glance in Mizzou's direction. As far as I'm concerned, after Bo and the staff stepped out on the plank like that for him, he should have plastered his room with Nebraska posters, built a shrine to Bo Pelini, and disowned his family.

I'm only slightly joking here.

Posted by: Robka on October 6, 2009 7:36PM CST
I really hate reading about Aaron Taylor having to auction off his Trophies and Championship rings for a failed business adventure. I wish there was a way for Husker fans to boycott the sale or just buy them for the minimum bid and give them back to their rightful owner. What good is bankruptcy if you can't even keep your personal items. He should have buried them somewhere safe;)

Bru, you are absolutely correct about having to win this game. VT was a hurtful loss but not that big of deal as far as the goals are concerned. This one is big. Conference first. The rest will come with time. And wins.

Hey all. I have a what if. I was talking to a friend of mine who is an ex long time south Missouri resident and he said the problem with the weather won't be the rain but the lightning that often accompanies it this time of year. Anyone know what the rules are concerning game stoppages? Is a win eventually awarded? Just curious.

Posted by: bruNo on October 6, 2009 8:07PM CST
yup, must win, absolutely...

Posted by: Sabado Gigante on October 6, 2009 8:32PM CST
I wonder if Mizzou will be mounting some plaques or raising any banners commemorating their two year "dynasty".

he's kickin butt, i mean we beat the steelers, the seahawks, the lions(whatever), but the D is much improved with the addition of Adelware Oguleye, that guys is sick! When Suh joins them next yr we're talking SB baybeh!

not so fast my friend, heres the plan, the Raidas pick him up and in a typically boneheaded move trade him to the Bears for some retread veteran...;)

How was the date in NYC?
You married yet.

Posted by: HuskerPower on October 6, 2009 8:57PM CST
I had to chuckle at bruno, I have been trying to tell bears fans its coming, but they just have been let down to much to believe it. And although I would love to see Suh go to the bears, You have given up any hopes of that happening by getting Cutler, now your gonna be in the middle to late first, which is Denvers now.

C'mon. That was a DYNASTY. They had stars on both sides of the ball. Put up a lot of points. Won a lot of games.

Man, those were the good ol' days.. huh Mizzou fans?

BTW. Someone said Baker could be better than Suh by the time he is done. Gotta love it.

Bru. Denver is 4-0

Posted by: Sabado Gigante on October 6, 2009 9:08PM CST
I wouldn't get too carried away PT. The Broncos have played 4 sorry ass teams to start the season. If after their next four they're better than .500, that will tell the story. Until then, I'm still hoping punkass McDaniels gets fired after the season.

Posted by: bruNo on October 6, 2009 9:10PM CST
I believe that about Stein....anyhoo, the League will not allow the denial of potentially the most 'sick' D line in recent memory, thats why Suh will be @ DA BEEERZSS!

woohoo!

But seriously (because really, even though I'll be pissed yet again, 66-0 ain't happenin'), I feel pretty damn good about this game. That is, until it comes out tomorrow that 3/4ths of the team has some rare variation of the Bird Flu.

Then all bets are off.

Boys, the Husker Nation is not alone in being pumped and primed. FB is at a fever pitch in the Red Stick. Just laying low, getting ready. After that beatdown they put on us last year, there is a big revenge factor.

I can't wait for Thursday nite; have been talking about the game so much at work, Big Red will have a big fan base in the Audubon country.

Posted by: Sabado Gigante on October 6, 2009 9:31PM CST
Good luck Busie...

I'd love nothing more than to see your Bayou Bengals dump the Gators on their backsides. They certainly need to be knocked down about a dozen pegs, as I'd hate to see them as the only undefeated team at the end of the season. That media love affair will be enough to kill a person.

PT, I have been making myself sick all week, want Thursday to get here and be over with. I hope this flu rumor is just a rumor, that is all we need at this point. I feel every player, will play a huge role in this game and being sick could make us all sick.

Miller, Nice looking Min Pin. You do the show route?

Posted by: PT Husker on October 6, 2009 9:57PM CST
Bo put the flu rumor to bed earlier tonight. No Problem. Good diet and exercise is a sure way to avoid it. Along with sanitation and flu shots.

Posted by: Busiekcreek on October 6, 2009 9:59PM CST
Miller, one of my BGFs has a min pin named Sally. God only made one of her; she's got more sense than most folk I know.

PT, if they run short of players should the flu bug run rampant, you could always be the 12th man. he he

Posted by: Miller on October 6, 2009 9:59PM CST
PT, I don't show min pins, but I have one and she is just a hoot. I get such a kick out of her, she is 2 1/2 and I would love have another one, but the boss won't let me. They are hyper little dogs but great watch dogs and very protective.

Me too Busie, I would like to see Gabbert get a turf burn vice carpet burn on his forehead, you know a little sliding action. Don't want him to get hurt but want him to know who is pushing him around!

Posted by: PT Husker on October 6, 2009 10:02PM CST
Busie, and the 13th and 14th. Might las about 3 steps as long as nobody hit me. Old bones are brittle. LOL.

Been fun boys and girls. I am out to dream of tiger steaks.

Posted by: Miller on October 6, 2009 10:03PM CST
Busie, min pins are very smart, they remeber things that you wouldn't think would mean a thing to them. I accidently kick my dog in the mug while putting my shoe on when she was a puppy, and ever since she stands about 10 feet away when she sees me putting my sneakers on. She is just so much fun, little things she does cracks me up!

Posted by: Busiekcreek on October 6, 2009 10:07PM CST
Sally got after a dog who came wandering through the yard. She ran so fast and was so excited, she leapt a ditch, went in the air and promptly passed out. We thought she was a goner, were running to her rescue and then she comes around and takes on in a tear after the wandering pooch who has long since made tracks. I laugh myself sick to this day thinking about Sally and the "chase". Gotta hit the sheets.

Miller, let's hope Gabbert is a bigger man than Chase....I hate it when they pick on Mizzou quarterbacks and tackle them. Its just dirty play if he has to wash his jersey.

Only place I could give Daniel credit was for his girlfriend. Just wish he would have faced this year's D Line.

Is it true that sweat from Bo Pelini's brow can cure H1N1?

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on October 6, 2009 10:49PM CST
BRG, I trust the version here that Brian Rosenthal has written, as it contains direct quotes from Bo Pelini, whose word is law.

The 49ers got rid of H1N1 by having Singletary glare at the virus.

Is that why Crabtree hasn't signed? He was afraid of catching the flu due to having to interact with teammates?

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on October 6, 2009 10:54PM CST
Crab was about 1 mile from my office today at 4949 Centennial Drive....I wonder how big the entourage was.

I loved when Brady got knocked around in a preseason game and they asked Belicheck about him in the presser...he said it was nothing and two questions later was asked if "he could have come back in the 2nd half if it was a regular season game". Belicheck said "Who?"

When I was watching the LSU game the other day I thought that sleazy call about excessive celebration more less handed that game to LSU. It immediately gave field position and momentum to LSU. Florida will win this game with or without their star.

Everyone, I think it is called damage control and is another example of why I question things. Again, everything usually comes out in the end. It is kind of like cable news.

LJS. On yesterday's front page of the paper I see new arena talk is surfacing again.

The new study says this thing will generate $260 million and create 1,200 jobs. I see they have now slid the women basketball and volley ball teams into the mix too. It further states $804 million and 8,000 new jobs would be generated just during its construction.

With all of the money that is going to be generated by building this thing as we are being led to believe prior to the vote, I kind of wonder why they want the Lincoln taxpayers to pay for it (the vote in May)? One would think that such a money maker would have investors standing in line to get a piece of the action.

ok, so if tax payers ante up how do they receive their portion of the revenue? sounds fishy.

as for what BO says and what is on huskerillustrated, i see no confusion what so ever. BO's quote,

"Roy wasn’t feeling well today but he’s fine. He could’ve practiced.”

so, yea that could be called an undisclosed illness, makes a better headline.

again, No nothing, you are an alarmist who feels you deserve more info from our coaches. i disagree, but do love your fire and passion for DONU.

Posted by: bigredblondo on October 7, 2009 6:59AM CST
to clarify my view that no no is an alarmist, yesterday he asked if huskers even practiced this week?? were you suggesting that this staff would take a time off before conference opener or were you just goofing because we havent had updates?

because the practice schedule for this game was reported in LJS (twice, i think) as well as the fact that the media would be shut out for most of the preparations. is that what irks you? no media coverage?

some people just feel entitled to unfettered access to the team, i like how Bo is running this thing.

Morning all, I've been having withdrawals but just haven't been able to get on here much. I guess my take on everything is I'd love to have as much confidence as a lot of other people but I don't see this being a blowout. I'd love to be proved wrong but I think it will be pretty close. I still see us pulling out the W but lets not think that Mizzou has all of a sudden become some slouch team. The argument goes back and forth about "not playing anyone" and our reply becomes "we at least played V-Tech" but lets not kid ourselves, while neither team played great in that game, they could have played better. My prediction is 35-24. As for the sick/not sick thing with Helu, do you ever stop to think that it messes with the other team just as much as it does us fans? I think we tend to get a little more worked up then they might but don't you think some of their players see this and go "alright, the run game won't be working". I think Bo must have a degree hidden somewhere in psychology. Look how excited we are about this year's team, if we listened to just what Bo said you would have thought we were 1-3 other than the other way around. It's real tough for me not to spout off to some of the younger crowd of Mizzou who have now jumped on this bandwagon of their's and think they have the next team of the decade or something but I just sit and bide my time, waiting for the Huskers to pull through and rip into them come Friday. Go Big Red

I tend to believe the Huskers can win on Thursday night in a close game that will probably be determined by turnovers. It is going to be real wet with a 90% chance of rain according to the weather channel. They have had 10 days to prepare and the flu is of no concern, so we are good to go!
