Bo confirms Fisher, Blue injuries
Posted by: Steve Sipple on August 19, 2010 at 8:47AM CST

Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini on Thursday morning confirmed linebacker Sean Fisher broke his leg during Tuesday's practice and is out for the season. Pelini also confirmed cornerback Anthony Blue tore the ACL in his knee and also is done for 2010.

Pelini was pretty sure Blue injured his right knee.

Blue has endured a run of misfortune injury-wise.

A junior from Cedar Hill, Texas, Blue tore the ACL in his left knee during winter conditioning in 2008. He had surgery that March, then another surgery that summer to repair scar tissue. He sat out the 2008 season.

Now, this setback. Considering Fisher and Blue's injuries, it's no wonder the team's mood was somewhat subdued after Tuesday's practice.

Meanwhile, Pelini strikes a conciliatory tone regarding his media ban in this Associated Press article by Eric Olson.

I'm kind of hoping Pelini doesn't lift the ban today. I wouldn't mind taking off work a bit early...

Enjoyed reading your article on Bo and Media Ban, Sip. But You did not stick to your purpose. You made your point but you also made HIS POINT as well. Now my friend, you can't have both ways. This is not Texas.

I think someone mentioned a certain young fellow who asked the wrong question (after Bo considered the issue dead) and his tone was not all that nice. Maybe one of you need to take him aside and give him some unsolicited advice on do and don'ts.

But it could have been just what you said in your article: twitter, texting, agents, media, internet, and all of it added together breeds the wrong speculation and issues that should not be issues develop a life of their own.

You are right, its not the 70's anymore.

Don't worry Sipp when your off, if anything important happens it'll be on the blog anyway.

One of the fall outs of the whole new 24 hour news cycle is that reporters are usually the last to know stuff.

Don't get me wrong though, I think you guys are still needed. But more for opinion and perspective.

Posted by: ancient1 on August 19, 2010 9:07AM CST
I think Bo doesn't ask for too much; just integrity, commitment, accountability. When the trust he places in people is abused can you blame him for getting angry? Generally the working press is cooperative and accountable but when some visiting jerk abuses the trust given him and gives out information inappropriately you can bet the press is all over it. So what do you do when trust is abused?, ban the press?, ban the visitors? The problem is that is largely a waste of effort. People, by and large, cannot be trusted to keep a confidence and he might as well accept that fact, shrug his shoulders and get on with coaching the best way he knows how.

Posted by: Big Wave Dave on August 19, 2010 9:12AM CST
Oh ya, and don't forget the outside idiots that pay others for access and abuse it, and bother family when they want to be left alone.

Sheeesh........

When a FAN pays for an 'Insider Info' sport gig, what do you think is going on? A lot of abuse of privacy, period.

Think this decision could have a little to do with T.O.?

Gotta love physical practices, but hate the injuries. They'll be game ready by the first game. Ready to kick some butt!

My first post in over 2 years just got me in trouble on the other thread because it was old news and not on topic, so i'll try and bring something fresh to the table this time.

Who do you guys think our starting QB will be?

OR

What are we going to do without Suh?

There, 2 questions that i have not seen any posts about............

Posted by: jewfrat1 on August 19, 2010 9:26AM CST
I don't know when we crossed the line where we feel we're all entitled to know everything, but it's annoying. Media? Look, you guys have a job to do, sure, but the whining and excuses about how you HAVE to do something because it's your job just don't cut it. Bo got ticked because people were calling Fisher's family to find out about the injury. How uncool is that?

Agree with Gofor2 in some sense because indeed, most writers are there just for opinion and perspective anymore. You guys rarely write straight news stories, which honestly is just the age we now live in and it's accepted.

We get the game day stories and stats and those are awesome, then the rest of the time it's writing things of "interest". That's all good, but when people in media feel they are entitled to cross the line to gain information, as though somehow that justifies their "scoop", it's too much. Way too much rationalization goes on in the media anymore.

Know what? We'll still love and follow our Huskers, whether you guys have access or not. From the articles you and Shatel wrote on this, it came across that somehow you were the important ones, as though we couldn't get by without you. That was YOUR rationalization for whining about it.

Trust me, you're not that important. We read you guys; we chat with you guys; but you're just a cog. The important ones are those we follow and we'll get our fill whether someone tries to get a scoop on something or not.

I went to school for journalism. I hate the way it has gone to this National Enquirer-type model. I'm disappointed the mindset of media members has shifted to what I mentioned earlier, this sense of entitlement. Know what? Maybe we don't need to know everything and maybe we don't need to know it "right this minute". I'm sure I'm in the minority on all this, but I'm OK with it. :)

Hey Sip....awesome piece earlier on the appetite for information by husker fans...very well put!!!

Posted by: Stuckinkansas on August 19, 2010 9:27AM CST
On a less sarcastic note;

The whole Anthony Blue thing is quite a bummer. Poor guy can't win it seems. I really feel for this kid. Did he get a med redshirt for last season?

Who, according to Sip, bans the media from practice.

Posted by: PT Husker on August 19, 2010 9:41AM CST
4 and counting. Spano is not recoverd fully but I am counting him. Smith, fischer, (projected starter), and Blue. 2 broken legs.

Hapenstance I guess. Does feild turf play a part?

Just asken

Watched some of the CU game last nite on ALT channel.. the last year of BC.. 51-65 loss.. saw Blue playing, Suh, P.Allen, what a difference a few years and a Defensive coach makes..

Sounds like Bo had a bit of an emotional reaction to two injuries, some leaks and one knucklehead contacting the Fisher family at the wrong time. Glad to hear he's backing off a little after making his point. Hope he can work things through with the media(most of whom seemed to handle this the right way) and how to handle visitor passes.

PS- SIP, put away the putter and git back to work!

"Ahhhhhh cinnamon and gravy!" - Gus Chiggins

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on August 19, 2010 10:00AM CST
jewfrat1 - You voiced many of the same opinions I have on this subject. But, I will say this. I think Coach Pelini has improved his media skills quite a bit over the past couple of years. I also think he needs to get out in front of stories. In essence what I am saying he needs to learn to use the media as his tool to make this program the best it can be. He will get the message out to everyone (fans, recruits, donors, etc.) he wants them have.

In this day and age you just can't have a total media block out because information will get out. A coach's wife will have a friend, a student sits next to a football player in class, one of the trainers is talking to his brother, and so on and so forth. All it takes is for one of these people to get on a message board like this where they can post anonymously, or do the same except to call a sports radio show. The rumors will flow, and there will be no way to put the genie back in the bottle.

So in this day and age, I think a coach, or athletic department, should get more media savy. Use the media to put your message out there before the rumor mill gets to cranked up and you lose total control of what people are perceiving to be the truch.

Perception becomes reality? Make sure people are getting the perception you want them to have.

Thanks for the feedback, all. I have start reading this stuff more often.

I'm taking a lot of calls on the column, and it's really a mixed back of reaction.

Man, there's always some sort of drama in preseason camp. Always.

Posted by: CBHusker on August 19, 2010 10:06AM CST
Blackshirtbacker-
Right on the money. Pelini just has to learn to stay ahead of the curve(granted that's tough these days). Having someone give a quick statement of what happened on the injuries to tide over reporters who are obligated to come up with something would help in this situation.

Posted by: haha on August 19, 2010 10:16AM CST
I would hate to see how he would react if he went through an injury filled season like the Sooners last year.

Posted by: jewfrat1 on August 19, 2010 10:23AM CST
Blackshirtbacker, beautifully said. :)

I love to hear about the Husker practices, the interviews with coaches and players and all of that all of the time. I can't help it I was raised that way, the Husker way.

With all of the attention these players get I am strarting to sense that they are not as humble as maybe they should be. Some of the humility doesn't seem genuine. Perhaps it is just confidence and not the U of Miama circa 80's and 90's attitude. It could just be I have a fairly low IQ.

Sipp, now that you don't have to cover practice you should have plenty of time to read this gibberish - which I thoroughly enjoy.

Posted by: PT Husker on August 19, 2010 10:33AM CST
Sip, you and your compadres have a job to do. So does Bo. He has acknowledged that he needs to work on his Media relations.

I do admire your restraint at LJS. You have told us repeatedly that you will not comment on rumors an inuendo at I for one appreciate that. I feel he was justified but might have overreacted just a bit.

Hopefully some of your less professional comrades got the message.

Keep up the good work.

Posted by: Outside The Box on August 19, 2010 10:38AM CST
Sip - Good column today. I agree with the vast majority of what you have to say, especially:

-The fan's appetite for info
-The struggles of the print/broadcast media to keep up with "citizen reporters" who are not held to the same journalistic and accountability standards
-Your advice to Bo to essentially recognize the hunger & passion and get ahead of stories to (as my PR prof used to say) "control the message"

However, I do disagree on a couple of your points:

-"Limiting media access to Husker players and coaches would in some ways punish those fervent and loyal fans that help define the program, and help pay Bo’s salary."

Let's be real - this is the middle of fall camp and there is not much newsworthy (other than injuries) going on. The depth chart (if we are to believe what has been written for the past 3 years) is open up to (and through) Sept 4, so the QB question is not going to be answered, nor are any of the other position battles. All we miss are minor comments about who is performing well. In my world, that's not a big loss.

Also, to imply that an August profile piece on say, Alfonso Dennard is ultimately reflected in Bo's paycheck is like saying the cheeseburger I bought at McDonalds makes integral to the beef industry. Technically true, but a stretch none the less.

Let's not forget the impact that Husker football has on the LJS. A separate web presence, dedicated reporters and staff, books, t-shirts, blogs, etc. It is no stretch to say that limited media access negatively impacts your ability to bring your product(s) to market.

-It seems that you're arguing that the "traditional" media should have more access while the potential "citizen" reporter (ex player, booster, connected fan, etc) should have less because they are more of a risk to share "insider" info to the hungry masses.

While it's true that I (and many others) have given credibility to certain posters with alledged insider sources, there is no (easy) way to a) know if what they post is accurate and b) know for sure that it's not credentialled media member anonymously trying to generate hits. I believe that the LJS, OWH, and most of the TV and radio outlets value journalistic integrity, but sometimes I question it.

-"Osborne knew the reporters (in the 80s). There was a level of coach-media trust that’s difficult to achieve nowadays."

Personally, I think that's good. One of the reasons I prefer the LJS & OWH to the content provided by huskers.com is that I know you guys aren't afraid to break news and express opinions that may offend the coaches. The UNL media (huskers.com and SportsNightly) is largely a controlled message.

Again, a good column today. As always, we the fans appreciate your time, dedication, and ability to bring us all a little closer to the team we love.

Posted by: The Wonderful Wizard on August 19, 2010 10:40AM CST
The Wiz also wants to remind Husker fans we lost Matt Holt, a walk-on LB who actually played quite well as a freshman in 08, but was hurt last year. Holt would have provided some depth at LB this year. Nebraska boy.

Another quality Husker hangs it up due to injury.

The Wiz predicted last week that injuries might be our biggest opponont in 2010.

Unfortunately, it is may be coming to fruition. Not good news. We need all of our top 50 healthy.

The loss of Sean Fisher is a big blow.

No more injuries please.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on August 19, 2010 10:51AM CST
You always have injury's and some of them are season, if not, career ending. At least the Huskers now have some depth that will help overcome this. The top programs are able to sustain great football with the loss of very good players. It builds character.

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on August 19, 2010 10:52AM CST
Jewfrat1 and CBHusker - Thank you for the comments.

Outside the Box - I loved reading your post. I thought it was very well thought out.

I wonder what would happen if one reporter from each major media outlet were allowed to attend practice. I am talking all of the radio TV stations, newpapers with a certain circulation level, print magazines, and web-sites who have been around for a set amount of time who could show they attract a certain amount of visits each day. The Nebraska Football beat writers/reporters there everyday anyway.

This would probably result in about 10-15 reporters showing up to watch practice each day. Could not an agreement be worked out on what is fair game to be reported and when it could be reported?

For instance, the Fisher/or any player injury could not be posted until 30 minutes after practice finishes so the University would have a chance to contact the family first.

Posted by: bigred-Ore on August 19, 2010 10:58AM CST
It seems it would be in Bo's best interest to keep his information director on speed dial and issue immediate "canned" messages for these situations i.e. Jon Doe and Joe Smith were forced to leave practice today due to injury. More information will be provided by the coach as it becomes known. Along with an admonishment to respect the privacy of the player and family.

Posted by: Inbread on August 19, 2010 10:59AM CST
I have a question. When we hear some kid is injured (in a major way) during pre-season camp, why is it SOO important to find out who that you would call the highschool coach and the parents? In my view, that makes the person that dialed those numbers, a complete and utter scumbag. By getting the name out there in a "scoop", what have you won? Not one damned thing. All you managed to do was upset the kids family, while they were stressed about an operation on their son. Personally, I hope Bo finds out who the person was, and permanently bans them from all Husker Football facilities and functions. I would even ban who ever they work for, be it LJS, OWH, who-ever. Papperazzi crap like that, has no place here.

Posted by: PT Husker on August 19, 2010 11:01AM CST
I would rather talk about the injuries themselves. Milehigh is correct. We are better able to cope with them than last year. It sucks for the player but the team is better quippped to handle this than even last year.

Props to Bo for his redshirt program.

But, two broken legs in a week? is that just (pardon the pun) the breaks of the game, or is feild turf an issue?

Most respected media are honorable people, care about integrity, and want to get the story right without unnecessary intrusion. But, there are are few, in the guise of wanting a story, will call family members, parents, about a injury that has not been officially let out and maybe the parents have not be contacted yet. this to me crosses the line, and I can see why it would upset Bo or any HC for that matter.

Another point I want to make is that if you are a privileged guest such as a former player or family to watch practice (the media have not been allowed to watch practice in the Bo era), you should know that it is an honor and you should follow the precepts that I am sure Bo has set for the privilege of watching practice. It is obvious that some cross the line. I am sure the message has now been sent. And in the future Bo will be the only guy talking about injuries.

Yes, this is a different era, with all the different venues such as twitter, cell phones, etc. But decorum and respect never go out of style.

I do think the LJS staff do a great job of trying to get the story right and not rely on rumors.

GO Big LJS Sports writers.

I've grown to respect you and BC, I appreciate your hard work.

Your column today though seems to imply it's the fans fault and "your just feeding the monkey" as the Dude would say.

Folks have desires for all sorts of stuff that's questionable and even downright excessive and harmful to themselves and others.

That's human nature. We all have it We try and control ourselves and most of time are successful.

But the folks that push for money,
well that's another story.

I'm sure I have this wrong, but it occurred to me as I read your column.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 19, 2010 11:15AM CST
Football is a contact sport, but you hate to see season ending injuries. It happens, sadly, and I really feel especially for Blue who has endured so much. Teams that are successful are able to overcome the injuries, and I expect this team to do that as well.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on August 19, 2010 11:17AM CST
One could compile all preseason injuries of the Division I, FCS or whatever it is called and categorize them to see what types of injuries occur and what type of surface it occurs on. All of that information is on the web these days and just needs to be thrown into a database that is structured to handle it. With Sipp and Brian no longer busy with practice they should be able to handle that.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 19, 2010 11:21AM CST
In the article by Eric Olson, it does sound like Bo is softening his stance and may talk to the media after practice sooner than Saturday. There very fact that he talked with Eric is a good sign, and as he said so well he does not want this become like Fort Knox.

I have read a lot about stretching in these posts as well. I particularly like the comment "bones don't stretch". That was a good one.

I do Pilates 3 hours a week and my bones always feel like they are ready to break. But they haven't yet so stretching must have something to do with bones not breaking. Logical.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on August 19, 2010 11:39AM CST
I guess another reason that my bones aren't breaking could be that I am not running 30 MPH and colliding with a 300 Lbs person running at 20 MPH.

Posted by: bigcajunhusker on August 19, 2010 12:01PM CST
I agree with Sipple -- Bo needs to accept and embrace the new media. He needs to "tweet" (although I admit it is incredibly difficult to use the word "tweet" in the same sentence with "Bo Pelini"). He needs to use the new media to get his message out before they get it out for him. There is nothing wrong with him telling everyone, "Looks like we had a serious leg injury today. If he is out for long, that will hurt, but if he bounces back quickly, offenses beware!"

This is just the way it is today. Make use of it. Fans (like me) want to know that Martinez ripped off a 65 yard run in practice. Ok, it was just practice, but I care about it.

Posted by: TruBlueRed on August 19, 2010 12:04PM CST
Much as I like reading Sip's/Rays stuff I have to disagree with his latest article. Bo specifically asked the media not to report on injuries from practice, then when he brought it to their attention they said they would continue to ignore his directives?.........I think Bo is black and white and so is this. Calling the parents and coaches before it has been officially put out is tacky in my opinion. If the media wants Bo to play ball with them, they had better learn to do the same. After the way Lee was hounded in blogs and media I wouldn't give an interview this year if I was he.......seems like Sip wasn't a Lee backer last year either........I sent him an e-mail early last season saying Lee would be the starter this year:)

Posted by: PT Husker on August 19, 2010 12:12PM CST
Sure hope Bo relents and lets the media back to the Post Practice interview so we can put this to bed.

personally, I hope Bo extends it until game week. He could maybe give a generic update twice a week. Let them suffer.....

Posted by: 4BigRed on August 19, 2010 12:25PM CST
I remember when Bo started spring ball in 08 and was rather tight lipped about injuries, etc. We had a couple of bloggers (who no longer post) who just went ballistic and did the "I'm a season ticket holder and donator and I have a RIGHT to know what's going on with the team!" Needless to say, quite a heated discussion ensued. I've just always figured giving a donation and paying for tickets gave me the PRIVILEGE of watching the team and nothing more. Methinks that some folks think of themselves as perhaps a little more important and deserving of information than they really are. JMHO

Posted by: Inbread on August 19, 2010 12:36PM CST
4BR, its because most folks from my generation have some ingrained sense of entitlement. And it makes me sick. Its perverse to think that you DESERVE anything of the sort. You get what you pay for, and thats tickets to the game, and the right to claim yourself as a "program donor". But what they seem to feel is that they (apparently by being born) have a RIGHT to know every little detail of some kids life, just because he plays football. Give me all the team stuff I can handle, I like that idea. Even injury updates, but that doesn't mean we need to know 10 minutes after the kid hits the turf.

If Bo lets the media back in practice, I hope he tells half the team to fake injuries and we have 15 ambulances on site.

Posted by: joe t on August 19, 2010 12:40PM CST
Injuries are just part of the game...you never like to see them, but someone always steps up to fill the spot. Better now to get those guys reps than in mid-season when it's tougher to coach and teach someone new.

so does anyone know if we have already officially "sold out" for every game this year? I would figure this year would be thoughest year to get tickets in quite some time.

Posted by: Mentally Red on August 19, 2010 12:52PM CST
I love Bo and his program, but I wince a little sometimes when his anger flares. He comes off sometimes as being a little bit punitive and controlling when people don't comply with his wishes.

Sip said these observers run back to their computers. Forget that, a lot of the info is probably being sent on the spot from blackberries and other such devices. Unless you get the TSA in there to screen your guests, you are going to have leaks.

One thing they might consider is having non-media observers sign a short letter of agreement that spells out what is allowed and what isn't. This would at least put them on notice as to what the expectations are so they can't claim that they didn't know.

Inbread, I think they typically get back some tickets from the visiting team each game that go in a matter of minutes, but I think they also have a few hundred that go as general admission each game so they can't declare an official sellout until the day of the game. I could be way off on that though, so I just wasted your time. ;>)

The media blackout is important to the handful of fans who sit by their computer everday begging for morsels of info. But I suspect that most fans are casual readers of such info and probably won't even realize that there is a blackout. Sometimes I will call friends back in Nebraska (who are fans) and make comments like "Sean Fisher just broke his leg" and they'll say something like "who?" They know who Suh and Niles Paul are, but the average fan doesn't necessarily hang on every tidbit of trivia like we do. This is our little world, but we need to remember that there aren't really that many people in it.

I assume everyone has been to the "Red Out Around the World" website by now. I have a related question: what is the difference between "Wear red. Be loud. Beat Texas" and "Wear red. Be loud. October 16"? It seems like we are still calling out Texas. Has this been discussed? I recall all the hubbub about the "Beat Texas" part of the previously released video, but have not heard anything similar for this less-pointed slogan.

I have to +1 that Misty's is pretty good. Took my wife there once, and she said it was the best steak she had ever had...she is from New Jersey. They have a lot of cows there, but more known for producing milk (and great ice cream) than beef.

Mentally Red,
I would have to agree with you regarding those who are casual fans and those who maybe holding on a little too tight
It has been over 20 years since the last time my zip code was Nebraska.
With the events that have taken place the last 10 years there has been a few occasions I have asked myself why I’m still holding on to the Huskers. Following the Huskers. Attending Huskers games whenever they are on the west coast.
I guess you can take the Husker fan away from the Husker but probably never take the Huskers out of a true Husker fan?
I stop calling back years ago hoping to gain incite on the Huskers from those who where residing in Nebraska.
For years I would call my mother hoping to find out (before the internet) some details on the Huskers.
She usually would comment that the Huskers needed to fire there coach (this was the 90s).
Please don’t kill the messenger.
So it is media like this that most of us get our Husker fix. Sad as it maybe.
Although there must be some rabid Husker fans still living in the state or there wouldn’t be 70,000 plus showing up for a spring scrimmage?
So I guess if one is going to be a Husker fan I must get with the program and be happy with what is allowed to trickle out.
We must always remember
Bo is great Bo is good let us thank him for our food!!
GO BIG RED

On a bright side UNLV has a new head coach.
The forth one since I have been here and that includes John Robinson.
The Rebels have their fall camp in Eli about 400 (might be further) miles from Vegas.
Limited media access.

Gotta tell ya, Sip, that it seems mostly like it's the media that is complaining about the "ban". I've listened to radio, watched local TV news and read local newspapers...and it's the media that is worked up the most about this. I've talked to quite a few other season ticket holders and most could really care less. The "ban" impacts your job and so it makes sense for you guys to be upset, but I think most media can't see the forest for the trees. You're too close to your own work to be able to step back with an objective view. On balance, fans seem to be able to wait for the ban to lift. The media??? That's another story - alot of ranting a raving out there, beating your chests. Just my little 'ole perspective.

Everyone is upside down in Vegas regarding there home.

Anyone thinking about moving out here for retirement now is the time.
500,000 homes are going for less than 100,000, you can find them for 50,000 on auction.

I bought my home in 2001.
At it's height it was valued at 400,000.
I never pulled a lot out. If I sold it today I would be lucky to get 80,000

I haven't read all of the posts yet but according to Sip and Brian it's all over the board the way college football teams do the media thing.
Personally I like the way Iowa does it. Two days of media prior to the start of the season and that's it.
Obviously Coach Pelini doesn't like the media and feels it distracts his team's progress....that's good enough for me. It's more important to win then it is to hear a bunch of sensationalized gossip.

Inbread - Your idea with the ambulances made me smile. That would be one way to hurt the rumor mongers - give them to many rumors to dilute the impact of all them.

MSe - I think you are right in your thoughts. I still don't see the ban as helping the NU football program, though. Like I was told several years ago by a wise old farmer, "Remember boy, you buy your ink by the pen, the media buys their ink by the barrel."

I think he was also the same guy who told me, "Fighting a newspaper writer is like wrestling a pig in the mud. All that will happen is you will get dirty, and he will love it."

Tru...I read it a bit differently. I certainly have seen where bloggers on this site and others are posting information ahead of the LJS and this is another case of that. Given the contacts that I assume Sip, BC, et. al. have, I'm sure they knew this before we did but were following Bo's directive.

The game changes once someone officially reports it or it gets posted and is all over the place. Some media may report this without a confirmation and some will require it. I don't know who first went with the story. I'm willing to bet it wasn't LJS or OWH since they have more to protect in terms of relationships with coaches. Note that the post which spilled the beans was not a reporter.

here is an interesting tid bit I copied from a different fan site I occasionally visit. It is a personal assessment from some one who went to practice the other day. It might at least spur some different conversation in this LITR box....

1. Zac Lee looks and acts like the starter, carrying himself with the confidence that he gained from the bowl game last year--I am looking for him to have a big year, with situational duty for martinez in the wildcat formation and cody green some mop-up duty.

2. The trio of mcneill, paul and kinnie give us oustanding hands in the passing game and should help zac lee immensely in getting open--cannot imagine any secondary better than ours that they go against in practice--also very impressed with quincy enunwa--speed, elusiveness, good burst, tough--catching passes and kickoffs.

3. Helu, burkhead and robinson another formidable trio at running back looking great with their cuts and their bursts of speed after the cut.

4. The offensive line is deep, is talented and provides barney cotton a lot of options for playing time--expecting sirles to start at tackle over yoshi.

5. The defensive line is so solid and so deep--they showed some new wrinkles in their lineups in practice which i am not free to divulge--you will see them in games, but suffice it to say that the pelinis are becoming very imaginative with their various defensive formations. I do think we will miss the strength of suh up front--at first i don't think our defensive front will be as effective as last year, but game experience will take care of that.

6. The linebackers are good--very impressed with Lavonte David.

7. The secondary speaks for itself--deep, good on coverage--i do think we will miss the speed of matt o'hanlon making quick decisions on wide run support, and again i think game experience will help.

8. The kicking game is solid in all aspects.

The practice got very intense towards the end and we were ordered out of the practice by Bo, as he worked the players extra after practice after a few altercations.

I think we have one very tough game, and that is Texas--the other teams on our schedule are not complete-enough teams to beat us if we play our game. As much as we want to beat Texas, they will want this just as bad. I see the game as a toss-up, and we go into the conference championship game either 12-0 or 11-1.

Barring injuries, suspensions, bad luck, it should be a great season

Everybody with internet access thinks they're a reporter now. They think they have a right to know everything about everything and ask anything of anyone at any time.

It would be like any of us going to work and finding 60 Minutes waiting in our office -- every day.

Posted by: Outside The Box on August 19, 2010 3:44PM CST
Inbread - your post hits on a lot of the reasons why the media is - in general - much more put out about the ban than most of us.

-That post provides more information about players and what to expect this fall than we've seen the entire fall (and in less than 400 words).

-The post is written by a person who isn't named, isn't accountable if any of that stuff is bull, and isn't on deadline - but that person DID get almost complete access to at least one practice.

-The insights and observations were available for free (assuming your board doesn't have a subscription) and the traditional media didn't make any money off of ads or subscriptions. They're stuck printing essentially the same stories as the LJS, OWH, DN, and other papers.

-Even if the LJS or OWH sees that information like you did, they can't use it in the paper (or on this blog) because what credible publication is going to cite "Fullbacks_Forever_22" as their source?

I am sympathetic to the plight of the folks in the traditional media - and it should be noted that I usually start with them as I like my news as rumor free as possible.

Posted by: fleaflicker on August 19, 2010 3:53PM CST
Even though the bloggars aren't held to as high of standards as newspaper and tv stations there still is a certain amount of accountability to bloggars if false information is reported and there is damage caused by such blogs to those people.

"The defensive line is so solid and so deep--they showed some new wrinkles in their lineups in practice which i am not free to divulge--you will see them in games, but suffice it to say that the pelinis are becoming very imaginative with their various defensive formations. "

Then in his next post he says:

"JAred Crick just moved to QB and has been named the starter."

If that's not credible than my name is not Outside the Box.

Inbread's post from the other site (and any like post here) also offers one person's opinion. That person could have been a former college head coach or could be an 18 year old who is pumping gas for a living. Sip and BC's articles are generally quoting the coaches and other players which is a whole different animal. The insight of a blogger may be a pile of gold or it may be a pile.

Posted by: Inbread on August 19, 2010 4:08PM CST
My opinion about media:

They should 100% stick to the facts and not try to "scoop" anything. When I come here, I want cold hard facts, not supposition and speculation. That should be left to the bloggers like us. We can speculate and rumor all we want. Media folks need to quit this pitiful one upsmanship that has become prevalent in todays "news". And ESPN, is the worlds worst for that kind of crap. I haven't visited their website in years because of it.

Posted by: fleaflicker on August 19, 2010 4:09PM CST
Well inbread you seem to have no shortage of horse puckey.

Posted by: fleaflicker on August 19, 2010 4:12PM CST
The "facts" that have been reported on one day say how the offense is getting the better of the defense then the next day the safety, through the media, says the defense is holding. Pitting team mates against other to make a story more spicey doen't do anything to strengthen the team.....IMO.

Posted by: Inbread on August 19, 2010 4:14PM CST

my take on this is Bo got mad, 3 kids got hurt and I think his us against the world mentality that this team has kick in. The players have talked about it when an away game happens.(which we will need on the road this year big time) Three kids are hurting, the team is hurting because of it. His focus needs to be on them, not us. I want my husker fix like everyone else, but more than anything I want Bo to take care of the kids. Sip while you have some free time on your hands can you tell me how we can show our support to the hurt players, or any husker player by way of email, cards etc. Would love to somehow show my support. We talk about the media and Bo but not much about the hurt players and what may lay ahead of them.

While waiting for a new thread, I won't be posting much tonight if any, and probably the same tomorrow. In about 2 hours, I take another a bottle of the nasty laxative. And I do mean nasty. It's only 10 ounces, but 10 ounces of really horrid tasting stuff. So will be living in the bathroom again this evening. No food after 6 pm, I can drink only water until midnight, then nothing at all until the scan is completed, which will be around noon tomorrow in Omaha. It's going to be a long evening and day tomorrow. The Scan itself will take three hours. So, I will have to put my game face on for sure. One step closer to knowing exactly what is happening and one step closer to a plan. The Lord is my strength and rock. My wife has been a trooper, I thank God, for her. I am a blessed man indeed.

The post by inbread kind of verifies why Bo also closed the practice to guests. The individual may have some bias concerning certain players, so info is just that, and is not view the play from a coaching standpoint.

I really don't have a lot of trust in nameless sources. In Sipple and BC I trust.

Go Big Red.
