Blake Lawrence's statement
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on October 22, 2009 at 7:01PM CST
You know how you'll hear a statement from some athlete and you know immediately that the athlete didn't write that statement or even sit in the room while the statement was put together?

Well, I'm told Blake Lawrence really did write his own statement about the end of his football career. And having interviewed Lawrence on probably a dozen occasions, I believe it.

He's one of the smarter, most friendly guys you'll meet.

Anyway, here's his statement in full:

"After suffering my fourth concussion in the past 18 months, I have decided to step away from playing the game of football. After meeting with my family, the athletic trainers, Dr. Albers, and the coaching staff, we determined that I would risk complications later in life if I were to continue playing football. Football has been an integral part of my life since my earliest years, and has helped propel me to great heights. Playing football at the University of Nebraska has been one of my greatest accomplishments, and I will always be proud to say I am a Cornhusker. Coach Pelini has given me the opportunity to continue my dedication to Nebraska football in a different role, acting as a coach and a mentor on the team. I am thankful for this new position, as I will be able to continue to be around the game I love most, and build on the strong relationships I have developed with my teammates.

Playing football for Nebraska has provided me with amazing memories that I will never forget. I have also been able to actively represent Nebraska in the Lincoln community. These are some of my most enjoyable moments as a Husker. I have been able to share my experiences with the greatest fans in college football. My status as a Cornhusker has given me the ability to make an impact in others’ lives, from signing autographs for future Huskers, or talking with the elderly about the experience of Nebraska football, I have been truly humbled by the love Nebraskans have for this sport.

I will continue my role as a student-athlete leader at the University, and will represent Nebraska in all of my future endeavors. I am blessed to have been able to play for the greatest football team in college history. Thank you to all who made it possible, and thank you for your constant support through this process."

Thank you Blake for your committment to excellence of the program...you are a model of what nebraska is all about...GBR...AND BAM!

Posted by: Miller on October 22, 2009 7:09PM CST
Sheesh I feel so bad for this kid. At least he is smart and knows when to quit before permanant damage is done. Good luck you Blake and thank you so much for being a true Husker and wearing the red N on your helmet so proudly. You will always be a Husker and will always be part of the Nebraska family! Thanks so much for all you have given!

What a class act and a very high character guy.

It's guys like Blake that make me proud to be a Nebraska fan, football or any sport. Thanks Blake, and good luck in the future.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on October 22, 2009 7:17PM CST
Miller are you coming out of your Husker funk (smile)? It's Thursday and cold and rainy here in Grand Island. PT probably has a little bit of snow where he lives. This has been a cold October.

Posted by: bruNo on October 22, 2009 7:17PM CST
Possibly a great future coach in the making.

Posted by: north-fla-husker on October 22, 2009 7:19PM CST
Good to see you on here again Islander, glad your health is approving. I will be in the old home town in a few short weeks for the annual deer hunting trip....either Nov. 14-15 should be in GI some time if it is on 14th i will try to see if any bloggers get together for the game at somewhere...

We were fortunate to have you suit up for the Red, Blake, and will be fortunate to keep you in a coaching role.

Best wishes on a successful transition and your impending graduation.

What a smart, classy guy.

Will Compton, Sean Fisher and Eric Martin: take note.

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 7:37PM CST
Now there's an attitude worth being around! Hopefully, the team can rally around Blake and 'take it to the house'!...
...Go Big Rally!

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 22, 2009 8:23PM CST
Thank you Mr. Lawrence for being a Husker. I only wish it could have ended better. The fans of the Big Red are truly better for have a classic as yourself and wear the red on Saturdays. I hope you are able to fully recover and find success in whatever you chose to do. GO BIG RED!!!

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 22, 2009 8:26PM CST
If I understand the article correctly, he will still be around the team in a capacity, hopefully that equates to him being able to maintain his scholarship, more so until he graduates.

Posted by: KingB on October 22, 2009 8:41PM CST
Curtis Carter is N!!!!!

Posted by: Ehusker on October 22, 2009 8:43PM CST
Brian,

It seems like they almost always have a good practice, high tempo, etc. However, for some reason, it does not translate into the game against a good opponent. Do you have any idea, why?

Posted by: HuskerBruin on October 22, 2009 8:57PM CST
Jeez, Blake! Are you trying to make me cry?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 22, 2009 9:00PM CST
Curtis Carter has a message for Nebraska fans.

"Get ready" was the message.

Thats my boy! Yesssssss!

Oh yeah... and I almost forgot... a BAM!!! for Curtis Carter...

BAM!!!

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 9:00PM CST
Very well written. I'm sure he will be able to bring a great deal to the table in his new capacity, and hats off to Bo & Co. for reaching out and making it possible.

I posted this on the other thread, I'm guessing most are on this one now, so I'll post it again:

Four concussions in 18 months...WOW! I have a feeling that a great many people don't understand the level of sacrafice that Mr. Lawrence has laid out there. He probably should have been done after the third one. Concussions are not to be messed around with, very serious issues later in life and I am so hoping that he doesn't have issues to deal with later on. I can't express the degree of gratitude that I have for his efforts. If you really think about it Blake Lawrence laid his life on the line for Husker Nation...think about it.

Posted by: HuskerBruin on October 22, 2009 9:01PM CST
The best part of Carter's commitment interview:

'He texted with Gabbert this week about his thoughts on joining the Big Red.

"I was texting Tyler Gabbert earlier," Carter said. "We were talking the last couple of days. We were talking and he said, 'What do you think?' I said, 'I'm thinking about committing.'

"I said, 'Are you hear to stay at Nebraska?' Because I really like him. He said, 'I'm here. If you're here I'm here.' Those were his exact words. 'You're here I'm here.' So I said I'm going to call the coaches later on tonight. I talked to my parents and they gave me the o.k."

Is Carter done? His answer - absolutely.

"I'm done it's solid," Carter said. "Yeah I didn't want to be the type that commits, and de-commit. That's why I waited so long to make sure this is really what I wanted to do."'

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 22, 2009 9:03PM CST
GBR))) Thanks man. I thought it was well written myself. It's real easy though.

You just hit the capslock... then you type B,A,M,!,! and then another ! to finish it up.

But you said it... well written.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 22, 2009 9:07PM CST
As for Lawrence... I got two words...

Andre Waters

He did the right thing.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 9:07PM CST
You're welcome...I think?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 22, 2009 9:10PM CST
Whatta relief! We needed a WR like Carter... BAD!!! It was getting serious.

I'll bet anybody on here that Carter does not redshirt. Any takers?

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 9:13PM CST
Yes, he did the right thing. I am just hoping he didn't wait too long to make it. The loss of brain function takes years to show up in most cases, I hope he is one of the fortunate ones.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 9:15PM CST
From what I've read about him he is a big time receiver. Step, what do you think about him roaming around in the slot on Saturdays?

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 22, 2009 9:17PM CST
Step,
Carter, will red shirt his first year, then 3 games into the season it will be pulled so he can get on the field for Kick Returns and 3 -4 plays a game. GO BIG PULL YOUR RED SHIRT!!!

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 22, 2009 9:18PM CST
I don't care where he plays. But he's the fastest guy we have right now. He's awfully explosive.

Posted by: californiared on October 22, 2009 9:24PM CST
lol i told you guys..he said he just wanted to wait and see how long the effect was gona last and he says its the same since he stepped on campus

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 22, 2009 9:29PM CST
I told you guys before this guy who claims to be his buddy told you guys.

That StephRaZor is nothing less than amazing!

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 22, 2009 9:29PM CST
Step----->californared, thats the guy I was telling you about.

Hows it coing Cali?
Do you play football with Carter?

Posted by: Miller on October 22, 2009 9:32PM CST
IH jon your earlier post, no I am not really up too parr. I will though, I swore i wasn't going to watch the game this Saturday, but there really is no way I will stay away from it. The electricity would have to go out to keep me away and then I would find a sports bar to watch it anyway!

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 22, 2009 9:32PM CST
98 yard TD pass for FSU.

Posted by: californiared on October 22, 2009 9:37PM CST

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 22, 2009 9:48PM CST
Miller,
How goes it? Hows the clown car running?

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 9:52PM CST
What is this clown car reference about?

californiared, you may have helped influence his decision to some degree. Nice goin'. He will be welcomed. Now you'll have to make it to Lincoln to see him play.

Posted by: huskers4_eva on October 22, 2009 9:55PM CST
whats the height and weight of this curtis kid

Posted by: californiared on October 22, 2009 9:56PM CST
uhh well i dont want to take too much credit but lets just say it sure didnt hurt :) yeah i already told him, if your fam cant make it send those tix out to the OC haha. He's really looking forward to playing with cody as well.Me and him are talking about the possiblity of cody, curtis, and gio..

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 9:56PM CST
Nish, I only ask because my 15 yr old calls my Mini "The Clown Car!" He says when the four of us pile out it looks like the clowns piling out at the circus.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 10:00PM CST
Step, I've always believed that during a game if you get happy you get beat! I think NC got a little happy. They're movin' it now though.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 22, 2009 10:01PM CST
5'10'' 160

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 22, 2009 10:04PM CST
Miller said she has so many stickers on her car that somebody said it looks like a clown car. It was her hubby or somebody... or maybe it was her Thunderbird dealer. I can't remember which.

Posted by: Miller on October 22, 2009 10:05PM CST
Nish my car is running fine, I took my kid to karate class and when he came out he couldn't find my car, now I was parked right outside the door to the building but with out all my NU Garb he didn't reconize it. Whole thing makes me mad!

Posted by: rattenkriegplatte on October 22, 2009 10:08PM CST
Good luck to you Blake and thanks for letting us watch you play in red. Don't know what he plans on doing afterwards but all his interviews he seemed very intelligent and grounded. It would be pretty interesting if he chose to become a coach. An intelligent guy with unlimited access to a pretty dang good defensive mind. Just a thought don't know the kid but would be interesting.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 10:08PM CST
No offense Miller, but that's funny right there.

Posted by: huskers4_eva on October 22, 2009 10:09PM CST
kind of a small player, but hopefully hes got the speed and ability to make plays.

Posted by: Miller on October 22, 2009 10:10PM CST
GBR, my car is husker Red with a bunch of Husker magnets on it, and my husband was bad mouthing my car and called it a clown car and made me take magnets off. I love my car and I am very proud to be a Husker fan.

Posted by: rattenkriegplatte on October 22, 2009 10:12PM CST
4.37 forty 37"vertical and 4.11 shuttle
Kid can move, watched some clips, got some moves but just fast as heck in pads.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 10:13PM CST
Well Miller...then there is only one thing to do...PUT THE MAGNETS BACK ON! It's your car, he doesn't have to drive it. You can tell him that the aerodynamics are all screwed up without the stickers...or, my gas mileage has gone down since I took them off! Put 'em back on, you won't be happy until you do.

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 22, 2009 10:14PM CST
GBR,
Miller referenced that her car was a clown car, so I asked her if it was hard to drive with those BIG RED SHOES!!!

Posted by: Miller on October 22, 2009 10:15PM CST
It is funny about my kid not recognizing my car, but not funny that I can't put my Husker goodies on it. I don't mess with his vehicles, so he shouldn't be messing with mine. A car fued going on in the Miller house right now.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 10:16PM CST
Try this one Miller...put the magnets on HIS car!

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 10:18PM CST
Good one Nish, that's a classic.

Posted by: Miller on October 22, 2009 10:18PM CST
No I'll keep them off and put them all over the house like on the freezer and frig. He doesn't usually drive my car, his was getting a make over from an accident he had. We have three cars and I own two of them, so he really doesn't have any say so on my car anyways, but I am going to annoy him by putting the magnets all over the house. I am sure he will give me his blessing on putting them back on my car then! LOL!

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 10:20PM CST
Sounds like a plan, good luck with that. Gotta go to bed, school tomorrow. Night all.

Posted by: Miller on October 22, 2009 10:21PM CST
Oh crap GBR are you kidding me, if I was to put those magnets on his precious car I would be in deep doo-doo! I wouldn't even try it! Well off the bed for me guys have a good night see ya all tomorrow night!

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 22, 2009 10:22PM CST
Nite GBR

Posted by: Doug Emery on October 22, 2009 10:26PM CST
Blake, thanks for putting football in perspective for ALL of the fans also. You get it when sometimes we don't.........it's a game and not how you will validate your life. I suspect with your wisdom that this closes one window but will open many successful doors. Good luck

Posted by: TommyOC on October 22, 2009 10:51PM CST
Best wishes Blake -

Welcome aboard Mr. Carter.

Posted by: CaseIH on October 23, 2009 7:56AM CST
Good luck Blake. You're a true class act.
Hey Step, I gotta question for you. I know you're real high on Curtis Carter. But how can rivals have him as a high 4* and scout have him at 2*. What gives?
Oh, and BAM and stuff.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 23, 2009 9:12AM CST
CaseIH))) Rivals has him listed as an athlete... #19 in the country.

Scout has him at WR... #136 in the country.

Thats the difference.

Posted by: Outside The Box on October 23, 2009 9:25AM CST
I'll guarantee this isn't the last we hear of Blake Lawrence - a young man with a bright future.

Posted by: StayTrue2NU! on October 23, 2009 6:22PM CST
when a kid is 5-10 and 160 lbs. scouts lookin at him as a wr won't rate him high but with our short to mid range passing game, screens and such he is just what watson needs, add another guy to the return game as well, we need some explosive returns... Dejaun Groce was the last guy we had that made ya hold your breath every time he was back to return one !

Posted by: StayTrue2NU! on October 23, 2009 6:26PM CST
at the beginning of this year with helu, Q, and burkhead i was thinking we might not take a RB at all this class... but with Q gone, and the other 2 hurt that changes to NEEDING at least 1 guy if not 2! lets hope Gio Bernard from Tampa St. Aquinas(one of the absolutely best HS programs in the country) has a great time tomorrow on his visit and commits ! we could use a guy like him definitely ! offers from EVERYBODY(FL, FL St., ALA, you name it)

Posted by: StayTrue2NU! on October 23, 2009 6:30PM CST
oh and also Blake, you have been a class act from the beginning, from helping other guys, who are trying to take YOUR job, learn the system better and giving tips(ala Cody Glenn... remember?) to givin it your all every chance, to helping out around the community, just GREAT JOB brother... sorry the football playing days are over but i see a possible future in coaching should he so choose, but he also has a 4.0 in Bio so we'll see... might end up doin far greater things...
GOOD LUCK

Posted by: Robka on October 24, 2009 12:32AM CST
Thanks for being a great example of what it means to be a Cornhusker!!!

GO BIG BLAKE!!!

Posted by: N_trepid on October 24, 2009 10:50AM CST
Couldn't ask you to give any more than you have, Blake. Well done, Husker Hero!
