Big back commits to NU
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on January 26, 2012 at 11:06PM CST
Running back Imani Cross has committed to Nebraska, according to Rivals.com.

Cross is a 6-foot-1, 220-pound running back who was deciding between NU and Kentucky.

The pledge from the Gainesville, Ga., native gives Nebraska 14 commitments.

The decision was made after coaches from both Nebraska and Kentucky visited Cross in-home on Thursday.

The running back's father Thomas Cross told Rivals the family is excited about the decision and happy to have finished the recruiting process.

"I'm happy for him," he told the recruiting site. "When he goes off to the (Team USA vs. The World) game (Friday), he will be representing Nebraska. I hope they get a good preview of what they're getting because it's like my mother said, it will all pan out in the wash.

"The Cornhusker Nation, y'all are going to enjoy reporting on him for the next four years."

Cross averaged almost 9 yards a carry in his senior season, rushing for more than 1,700 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Here's his highlights.

Welcome Imani.

BAM! this will be perfect fit as big 10 back. who hopefully can get 3-4 yards after contact and with whom we can line up and run the ball right in the middle.

Imani will be our 3rd and short back & Tyson Brokemeier will be our 3rd and long QB
I hope this pure pocket passer dont get lost in the mix of 40 times

the kid from Aurora needs to get a shot

I'm goin out on a limb and will say TM is NOT our starting QB at the END of 2012
he might kick us off but he is done by mid year by ( Broekemeier, Armstrong or Carnes)

you heard it here first

can I get a 'Hell Yeah'

don't forget that Carnes is a 4* dual threat from TX that can throw pretty well
*see spring game....
Duh

Posted by: TheBigRedTheory on January 27, 2012 1:37AM CST
Yes! I'm sure he'll put on 10-15 more hard lbs. and be the thumper NU needs.

I'd love to see the last four commits to be Peat, Curry, Fuller and steal away Lambert. Hope Michael Rose is working his phone!

And 'boomboom' I agree, I think Tyson Broekemeier has a chance to be special.

Posted by: TheBigRedTheory on January 27, 2012 1:44AM CST
Rose - Buck LB
Lambert - Mike LB
Santos - Will LB

Boy, would I like to see that for a few years!

I heard Curry & Peat are 'N'
we need DT Valentine & DB Devian Shelton to fill the needs

Carnes isn't from TX. He's from FL.

Posted by: BO-urNe sUpremacy on January 27, 2012 6:05AM CST
Looks like we stole Imani from the SEC and ACC, how'd that happen?

Also, Schiano leaves Rutgers in a rut, maybe we get Fuller.

Posted by: stuckin tx on January 27, 2012 6:08AM CST
So,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,who's gonna convince Bo we need to give another q/back a try?? As long as he has this mindset, he's stuck on 9-3. Hard to forget his quote about "if we put Carnes in we put in the whole second team". Not too adventurous. TO made changes to shake up the status quo---remember Tommy coming out and Brook going in??? Methinks we need to experiment a little to see who really packs the gear.

Two things in this thread. While I agree that winning the B1G is the first priority, the idea that we are going to win games with 2 and 3 yard dive plays seems a bit odd, and the idea that we have to fit into this notion of B1G football and play "that" game seems ludicrous. We need to do with what we can recruit and grow to get what we want to do... done. (paraphrasing someone there, but not sure who... Jamie Fox from Booty Call??? Good lawdy!). If that's mashing the ball, OK, but I'd rather not put 20 pounds on this kid for the sake of putting weight (even if it's muscle) on him. If I can hand the ball off to the guy and he can get me six yards on first down or the two yards on third down that I need, what do I care? Do I care if he's Bo Jackson or Marcus Allen or Christian Okoye? No. Example on the Redskins this year. Helu and Royster. Helu gets it done with toughness, athleticism, and speed. Royster doesn't blow you away at all. Not big. Not fast. He's not an elite athlete or a male model (let's call that the "Landry Syndrome"). But, he's the all time leading rusher at Penn State and he gets yards in chunks and can get you 20 in a hurry--even in the NFL behind a mediocre OL. Is it vision? Is it trust in his game? Instincts? Who knows? But I do know that if the Skins had tried to put bulk on him with muscle and straight-line speed they might ruin him. Look at Montee Ball... you can have your thumper, or you can have a Heisman trophy candidate. Getting tough yards is about situational understanding and mentality, not how much you resemble a bowling ball or freak of nature. If this kids' got "it", I've got nothing against S&C, but don't wreck a good thing. Nebraska HAS done that before with RBs. It's OK, we can go by committee. There's enough for at least two RB stars on this team. Oh, did I forget? Welcome Imani!!! Good to have you.

Posted by: TheNUorder on January 27, 2012 7:20AM CST
Boom,

Appears there may be a situation with Curry. Unless something unexpected happens, the NU bus is full with the planned signings on Feb 1. Our coaches informed him yesterday.

Curry has appearantly re opened his recruiting. TCU and ATM are now on the radar.

My guess is that means Valentine has told our coaches he is N on signing day and/or the "surprise" signing day pickup is a DT.

Turning away talent this year it appears. Nice problem to have I guess.

Posted by: crindal on January 27, 2012 7:25AM CST
@Wecandoit!

OT Andrus Peat is who NU is shooting for. hope we get him.

No sudden, startling movements...............and Devin Fuller is.....................OURS BABY!!!!!!

Posted by: PT Husker on January 27, 2012 8:09AM CST
Ok lets get to the important question. did he raise our "Star Rating", lower it, or leave it the same?

After all isn't that what really matters? Who cares whether he can play or not as long as we have a good "Star Rating".

Posted by: Husker_Heat on January 27, 2012 8:18AM CST
You're right PT, the only thing that truly counts is perception.

Posted by: bigcajunhusker on January 27, 2012 8:18AM CST
247 analysts did not have anything complimentary to say about the kid yesterday morning on Bill King's radio show. Said he was originally a Tennessee commit, and that Tennessee did the right thing backing off of him.

Just sayin....

NU, that is a nasty rumor you are spreading. LOL. Bo comes from the SEC. He knows somebody in this class won't make it or somebody else will leave.

Unfortunately, I went over the edge long long ago, :-)

Posted by: Papillion_Husker on January 27, 2012 8:25AM CST
Welcome aboard, Imani! You seem to be a pleasant and hard-running young man.

Now, about Curry. I was under the impression we were taking between 18-21 in this class. We "have" 14, so we still have approx 4-7 spots to fill. You'd think we'd want to take a couple DTs, but have yet to have one commit. Even assuming Valentine is N, I'd expect us to continue going after Curry.

Something seems afoot. Unless Curry decided himself to weed Nebraska out, there must be some sort of surprise in store.

Who else is N? I'm guessing Peat, Moore, Fuller and Valentine. Any predictions? Surprises?

Posted by: PT Husker on January 27, 2012 8:33AM CST
PH, as long as they have 3* or more bring em on. Nothing lower though. We must maintain or average. LOL

I agree with you about Curry. Something else is going on that we will never know. Grades, attitude etc. The possibilities are endless but something turned the coaches off.

Posted by: PT Husker on January 27, 2012 8:35AM CST
The receiver from Missu would be nice.

Posted by: Red Machine on January 27, 2012 8:37AM CST
You nailed it Husker Heat - Schiano going to the Bucs will have Fuller re-evaluating his options.

I heard that he also just visited AZ, apparently has ties to Rich Rod.

Adding him along with Peat would be stellar.

Posted by: RedHuskers13 on January 27, 2012 8:42AM CST
PT, U hear of any rumors on which way some of these final recruits are leaning towards? Peat, Fuller, and Valentine? I have the feeling that Peat is N, but im just hoping the Rutgers situation pulls Fuller in.

Posted by: PT Husker on January 27, 2012 8:47AM CST
Red huskers. I am not really in that loop. The only rumors I hear come from here.

And you know that is Gospel. LOL. I do have my own opinions however and I will be amazed if we get Fuller. I think the home fires burn strongly in that young man.

Hope I am wrong.

Posted by: TheNUorder on January 27, 2012 8:51AM CST
PH,

Don't forget that Charles Jackson requires a scholly if he qualifies this spring as expected so that's 15 already.

Andrus Peat
Devin Fuller
Alonzo Moore
Devian Shelton
Vincent Valentine

are all strong possibilities and would put us at 20. If the rumored "surprise" is true
that would be 21 so something has to give.

Based on what I was told, the Curry slow down is totallly numbers related on our part. If we only sign 50% of the above, there is still a home for him.

I would love to have Curry in this class but there may not be room. Feb 1 is a long ways away, so lots can happen before the paperwork arrives so no one really knows at this point I guess.

Posted by: PT Husker on January 27, 2012 9:01AM CST
Well Mr recruit, we really like you and would love for you to come to our school but we think we are full. If you could delay your commit until later in the afternoon we should know by then and we will let you know.

If I am a high profile commit that would really impress me. That said, I like the honesty. If in fact we are full give the kid a chance to go elsewhere.

The fact that we don't play games is impressive in this age we live in.

My guess is that Curry lost interest in NU. Some guys on this blog fail to recognize that he & many others have plenty of options. NU is "right" for a few of them...not for most. The idea that Peat, Fuller, Moore, Shelton & Valentine are "locked-in" so we can turn players like Curry away is insane. Surely we would've signed Curry before another running-back!!

Posted by: BO-urNe sUpremacy on January 27, 2012 9:27AM CST
i guess ave star rating is the key, so we are about 3.36 which puts us in the top 15 or so, wooohooo!

Posted by: Jackson1 on January 27, 2012 9:30AM CST
More on Curry:

"Missouri was believed to be a frontrunner in the race for Curry, but TCU definitely should be considered a power player. TCU has a growing history of producing NFL defensive lineman, and playing in the Big 12 next season has assisted in recruiting. Additionally, the TCU campus is located mere minutes away from his home."

Posted by: BO-urNe sUpremacy on January 27, 2012 9:31AM CST
#18 more like.

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on January 27, 2012 9:31AM CST
It was good to learn of the news NU is getting a big back. What I wish they would get is a big ole' butt kicking fullback like Rathman, Mackovica, etc... The guy they had this year tried hard, but if you are going to run power option I football, you need a butt kicking fullback and tightend. Think William Washington (not a great receiver at 6'5" and 260, but he sure could seal the edge).

Please get a great fullback. Maybe a walkon, or maybe there is a younger guy in the program already who can fill this role. Just please get one.

Posted by: BO-urNe sUpremacy on January 27, 2012 9:33AM CST
honestly, from his film, IC doesnt look terribly fluent running, but who can tell for sure from that vid.

Posted by: PT Husker on January 27, 2012 9:36AM CST
Jackie, did it ever occur to you that We might be taking Valetine over Curry?. That a big RB fits our needs. Just a couple of thoughts to ponder

Oh don't bother. You will spin it your way. I will spin it mine.

If any of this happens that is.

Posted by: Jackson1 on January 27, 2012 9:52AM CST
PT
Definitely considered that. I also believe the Coaches would (given the choice) take a quality DT over another Runningback. We have a stable of runningbacks including 4 Sophs and a terrible void at DT. B. Belichick has proven that runningback is a position you don't have to commit big resources ($$$ or Scholarships) on. Our needs at DT are glaring!

Posted by: PT Husker on January 27, 2012 9:52AM CST
Recruiting is a huge Chess game. And the pieces are always moving.

We like to harken back to the good ole days here and that reminds me of a time when we had 2 5* running backs on our radar. A kid from Omaha. Keith Jones I think and another from the south.

When Jones committed the other kid went else where.. His name was Emmitt Smith.

Just something to ponder as the day gets closer.

Posted by: PT Husker on January 27, 2012 9:56AM CST
Well that is how we think but we are not making the decesions.

and maybe NU's info is screwed up.

But I trust him more than you. Sorry.

We will never know anyway so it doesn't really matter.

Posted by: cstxfn on January 27, 2012 11:24AM CST
This star ratings thing has been around longer then I thought. I guess I just started paying more attention in recent years because it's become a bigger show. Sometimes I listen to those of you on here who get excited about the prospective Husker recruits, and sometimes agree with folks lamenting the process. In the end, I'm still okay withe the current guys in charge who do the work to reel these guys in. I guess if I had to pick one really irritating thing about recruiting time, is the guys who make a huge show on signing day, sitting at a table with several caps in front of them, playing a little game of a different kind. Some have good reasons to wait til signing day to announce, but they don't do it like that.

Posted by: TheNUorder on January 27, 2012 11:37AM CST
I found an interesting article on Cross. This article was written when he was a Tennessee commit and was scheduled to play in the SEC.

Don't know if this writer played him up because of those relationships or not but there is some interesting insight into what Cross does on the field in this article. Sounds like he could be a great addition to our team.

IMANI CROSS AS A VOL

Sorry the link didn't work

Try this

IMANI CROSS AS A VOL

Posted by: [gofor2] on January 27, 2012 11:45AM CST
Cross was recruited as a blocking back. He is a home run, if he is opening holes for the three headed monster in '13. If he earns carries over one of the three heads, well he is a home run then.

Posted by: cstxfn on January 27, 2012 11:51AM CST
He's got a similar build to Arian Foster, another Tennessee commit who didn't work out well for the Vols, but blossomed in the pros.

Yeah, I know.... a comparison that is really grasping at straws. Hope is a good thing though, right?

Posted by: Jumbo Stiehm on January 27, 2012 11:53AM CST
meh,Kentucky, really?why werent any real schools after this guy?I guess the positive is we can still beat Kentucky and SanJose st. for recruits. If we land Peat I will be a little more pumped about the class Bo is signing. And IMO the person we need to see at QB is Jammal Turner,I saw Brockmeir play in HS and nothing he did made me think he could add any hardware to the trophy case, but thats just my opinion.

Posted by: [gofor2] on January 27, 2012 11:55AM CST
NUorder-

You have a much higher opinion of Moore than I do. I have seen his 40 times listed as 4.65. (And I read Rlubs posts about hand-held vs. electronic. But that is slow regardless.) I just don't see him having the speed to play anywhere but QB.

What am I missing about this kid? Please sell me on him.

Posted by: [gofor2] on January 27, 2012 12:04PM CST
NUorder-

I would value your opinion on another thing as well.

I am scratching my head about this past week. We make late plays on 2 "diamonds in the rough". Then we slow play Curry. This is not meant as a slam on those 2 young men, but that seems backward to me.

Posted by: TheNUorder on January 27, 2012 12:06PM CST
gofor2,

Not trying to sell anyone but..........

In camp this summer our coaches said that he has the best option footwork they have ever seen in a QB. Analysts say he he plays faster than his posted times. Our coaches say he is one of the best natural athletes they have ever seen. He is a player and a great young man.

I now Rivals recently upgraded him to a 4 star, but I still think he is underrated. I know, hard to believe LOL

I don't think QB is the position we are recruiting him for. Word is it's a battle between receivers coach and DB.

He's taller than Fuller but not quite as fast off the line. Both kids can play about any position they are needed at. They are both that good. Love both yoing men and will be happy with either or both. Obviously both would be amazing for Nebraska

Posted by: PT Husker on January 27, 2012 12:25PM CST
NU, Check your messages.

Posted by: TheNUorder on January 27, 2012 12:29PM CST
Gofor2,

I think our coaches were looking at possible plan B's last week. I think a lot has clarified itself this week.

Valentine announced Thursday I believe is was that Wednesday night he notified the coaching staff he was committing to but would not go public till signing day. I am assuming that is Nebraska and one of the late looks no longer had a home.

I don't think they were real sure about Cross till last night either. I think he may have even been a pleasant surprise. I think we had a 2 out of 3 plan for Valentine, Curry and Cross (my guess) and the other 2 were backups in case we didn't get any of the 3.

Valentine (if he did call us Wednesday night) and Cross were the first to commit and Curry becomes a victim of a numbers game.

It looks like our coaches were preparing for the worst last week and may be getting excellent results this week and not need plan B.

That's my opinion anyway.

My belief is that if Curry had committed before Valentine or Cross, Valentine or Cross would now be the victim of of small class numbers and Curry would be N.

Posted by: [gofor2] on January 27, 2012 12:30PM CST
Thanks for the info NU. Is he recruited as a QB like Turner was? (Give the kid 5 snaps behind center before everyone agrees on a move.) Or not at all?

It seems clear that we are telling Fuller that he can try for QB. (Fuller keeps saying he prefers school that will give him a shot at QB and have a Off scheme that matches his QB style.)

I would assume that we make the same offer to Moore, even if we believe that he lands at a different position. But you heard otherwise?

Posted by: Papillion_Husker on January 27, 2012 12:32PM CST
Nate Swift ran a couple of 4.65's at the NFL combine, I believe. Pretty good WR for us, if I remember correctly.

Posted by: [gofor2] on January 27, 2012 12:40PM CST
NU- I agree with you analysis of Curry, Valentine and Cross. What I don't get is the Whitaker and Alexander offers.

Do you think we wanted both of these players over Curry?

Posted by: TheNUorder on January 27, 2012 12:56PM CST
Gofor2,

I don't think the QB position is an issue with Moore. The comments about his QB footwork were more to point out his athleticism as the coaches see him, not his desire to play that position. If they have told him he is guaranteed a QB shot, I missed it.

I don't view Whitaker and Alexander being taken over Curry. They filled a different need for this class at different positions.

Don't get me wrong, I really still want Curry but another DT may not be an option in this class. Feb 1 will tell us for sure I guess.

I misunderstood your diamonds question. I thought you were refering to the kids we started talking about last week and have turned away now.

Folks, we could sign 65 5-stars and 55 4-stars,
but if Bo doesn't make a change at QB, it will be for naught.

Posted by: RED KOOL-AID DRINKER on January 27, 2012 1:11PM CST
I like the progression of this blog. Started with a resounding cheer for the young man and has slowlt gone to questioning NU's motives for getting or not getting certain players

I am not chastising anyone, far from it. I just find it funny that in one blog, people go from a cheer to well its not that big of a deal.

When signing day comes and these kids sign or don't sign, thats when I will make my decision whether it was a success or not,but even then we won't know till they take the field.

I trust BO and the other coaches to make the choice they feel is in the best interest of the team.

11:35 A.M. on Feb 1 Andrus Peat is signing his letter of Intent on ESPN live from Arizona.

Doesn't say if its MST or CST. I guess recruiting isn't an exact science.

I got to quit reading this stuff. I promised myself that I was going to take this season for what it brought and not get all hyped up. And i realize that most of these guys are 2013 impacts.

But it soulds pretty good. And once we reach the rarified air of a top class it will continue in the years to come.

But I am not gonna go there. Nor am I gonna go outside and have a Cigarrette.

Both things are pretty tough. LOL

When was the last time we had a hat on the table on an ESPN broadcast???.

If that is what he does.

Posted by: TheNUorder on January 27, 2012 1:53PM CST
I wonder if Avery is going to be part of the same signing ceremony? They are cousins after all. If so, that could be 2 Husker hats on ESPN at one time. Would be sweet!

Better question ,when was the last time ESPN had head to put on a hat? I am not sure they make hats that big ,do they?

PT-

Realistically, even in a best case scenario, this is not a top ten class. It is a typical Bo class. That is still very good. But it is not in "rarified air."

I applaud the staff for the new approach this year. But to take the next step we need some more success on the football field. We need to win the B1G. Win a big bowl game.

When we start bringing in freak athletes that are here to win the NC, then we will be in rarified air.

Not sure ESPN Could handle giveing NU all that love. Assuming he picks the right Hat.

gofor2,while I agree partly with your post,it would be a little early to declare whether or not this years signee's could be considered "rarified" until they make an impact or not.

I remember back when Tom's teams were winning conf, championships and NC's,some back then were saying the oppisite. That the so called great recruits would not come to Nebraska because they would not get to play right away and so they would sign or commit to schools where they would see playing time right away.

This is just my opinion, but I believe a fan needs to wait at least 2 years to see what impact a player makes,he could be as advertised or he could end up a bust only time will tell.

I do however think you're correct about this being a good signing class at least on paper and from hype

Here's hoping that the class signed last year and this years class will be the ones that put Nebraska and BO over the top

GOOOO

PT... I don't know if it was the last time we had a "hat on the table" on signing day, but I remember a qb recruit named Carlyle Holliday who picked up the Notre Dame cap a few years ago and it left me with that pet peeve. If we had some hot shot who picked up the Husker hat on one of those shows, it might be good therapy for me.

Sweet. Another 3 star rated player to go along with the rest of our 3 star players. And to think, we are pulling some of these guys away from those powerhouse schools like Fresno St., Tennesse, Arizona St, etc. Looks like a stellar class we are putting together here.

We need some talent here, for crying out loud.

The number of stars does not always indicate ability or how they will perform during their college careers. How many stars did Lavonte David have coming out of high school and how many schools recruited him? He was not even recruited by the teams in Florida.

LD had 4*s when we got him though:

Red Cross!! I like it, and I hope he really does become a big time fullback for us.

I won't claim to "know" who is N right now like some others, but all of the kids we are looking at look pretty special and I wish them luck in finishing out their process and hopefully that decision leads them to HuskerLand! GBR!

True, the number of stars doesn't indicate how good a player will be. However, when you look at the schools we are competing against for some of these recruits, it's very telling that we aren't exactly getting top notch guys here. I mean, Cross was being recruited by Tennessee. I could go on, but I don't want to get too depressed about it.

Oh, sorry, he was deciding between us and Kentucky. Wow. That says it all.

Sorry, Imani, I'm sure you are a good kid. And I hope you pan out. I hope you prove us all and that you end up being the next Monte Ball...

Posted by: TheBigRedTheory on January 27, 2012 8:16PM CST
I like Imani! On video he might not look super quick, but he is often running away from smaller players, then if they do catch him, they tend to bounce off him.

N_trepid has it right, more diamond formation!

I wish tmart would just tell this university and its horrible fans to f off. You people deserve a losing team. To blame NU's problems solely on Taylor shows a complete lack of football knowledge, and still spewing venom towards a kid a month after the football season ends, is purely childish.

No one has said a word about abdullah's fumbles, our recievers dropping at least 4 balls a game, yoshi hardicks complete lack of discipline the entire year, for that matter the entire offensive line. Our defense inexcusably not playing up to Nebraska's standards.

No its all "Taylor sucks", "we need to start another unproven qb whose never seen the field", carnes is god, blah blah blah blah. Pathetic.

It is pretty sad that I have to defend the soon to be all time stat leader at this university because some fans dont' like the way he throws, because thats what it is really about. Once again I almost hope he gives you all the bird and leaves.

Lynch,

I agree.

The thing that I hate most about losing a bowl game is that everyone is in a foul mood during the offseason.

When we win the bowl game, everyone spends the offseason preparing for a National Championship the next year...lol...that's more fun.

What happened to the 250 lb back that transferred from Alabama but who was not eligble last year?? Could he not be a fulback prospect for next year?? Cross is not even on campus yet and all on here have decided he should be our FB of the future.

I would like to see more loving ink for the 2012 walk-on class. Afterall, we have this walk-on program and tradition that we are all proud of, but it seems to me that we only talk them up when and/if they become starters or make a significant contribution.

I have read countless articles on how these walk-on players push the highly rated recruits, and at times provide the incentive for other highly recruited players to become better by the example they set in practice.

From the scant and few articles I have read here on this blog it seems to me that there may be six to seven 2012 walk-ons making great contributions to the team in the coming years.

We don't know the dreams of these kids and where it will take them. Danny Woodhead comes to mind ( I know that he wasn't a Cornhusker walk-on, nor recruited by us), but just look where his competitive spirit and dream took him. The names of other Nebraska kids escape me at the moment - those who have gone on to professional football careers.

I would like to see these kids get more recognition!! JMHO. GBR!
