Big 12 meetings: Final day
Posted by: Steve Sipple on June 4, 2010 at 9:04AM CST

Friday marks the final day of the Big 12 meetings in Kansas City, Mo. The athletic directors finished up their business Thursday. League presidents and chancellors remain at the InterContinental Hotel, along with a horde of reporters.

Two nuggets to begin the morning:

** Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne has called a mid-morning meeting Friday in Lincoln with Husker staff/coaches to apprise them of "latest developments" on the conference realignment front.

** So, we have what appears to be a solid report of the Pac-10 perhaps looking to add Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Colorado. Are we headed toward a handful of "superconferences"? Did Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe know something Tuesday when he spoke with a degree a passion about the potential dangers of such a scenario?

“I think it’s something that we, a community of leaders who are concerned with all of intercollegiate athletics and higher education, better be careful about,” he said.

Beebe thinks college athletics has a “very good balance” right now.

If disrupted, he says, “I think we’re going to have long-term negative consequences.”

Maybe we're about to find out.

here we go big 12 here we go

sheesh

what leadership

Posted by: Outside The Box on June 4, 2010 9:11AM CST
Undoubtably, Beebe's legacy will be comparable to that of the Titanic's captain. However, I'm not sure that's entirely fair.

Put it this way: I like my job and love my company's leadership, but if our competitor came and offered me more money and better perks, I'd probably be gone.

Why is it Beebe's fault if several of his "staff members" can find a better opportunity?

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on June 4, 2010 9:18AM CST
Mr. Sipple - I had gotten to the point where I was burned out on the Big Ten expansion talk because there was really nothing new coming out. But, with the PAC 10 coming into play, I am interested once again in the conference expanison talk and reporting. Please keep the excellent reports coming.

I read Mr. Beebe's comments the other day, but I still don't see the "long-term negative consequences" being all that severe or negative.

IF this situation were to be extended to its natural conclusion would this mean all conferences would be disbanded. The NCAA would do all of the scheduling of the schools (like the NSAA does for high school football in the state of Nebraska) choosing/qualifying to compete at the highest level of college athletics and all of the revenue from outside sources (TV, liscencing, etc.) being shared equally by the participating schools? How much money could this new organization demand from the TV networks?

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on June 4, 2010 9:21AM CST
I guess what I am trying to say, if the trend is towards super conferences, why not go all the way and make one super duper conference which could dictate unbelievable terms when negotiating with the television networks?

Posted by: kungfusquirrel on June 4, 2010 9:22AM CST
re-posting from the last thread, e-mails have been uncovered indicating high interest in Texas from the Big 10, and a "Tech problem" regarding Texas Tech possibly being a package deal along with A&M: http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sports/stories/2010/06/04/e-mails-hint-eyes-are-upon-texas.html?sid=101

There is no evidence that the Big 10, SEC and Pac 10 (the conferences that hold all the cards) want a "super duper conference". In fact, this may be the beginning of a break away from the NCAA.

Posted by: GreenBrterRed on June 4, 2010 9:27AM CST
This conference re-shuffling talk has been interesting and boring at the same. It seems that geographic boundaries are not that important to the proposed super-conferences. With that in mind would Nebraska listen if the SEC made an offer?

Posted by: Steve Sipple on June 4, 2010 9:36AM CST
GreenBrterRed,

I think Nebraska would HAVE to listen to the SEC, unless the Huskers know the Big Ten will extend an invite. I have to think Tom and Harvey have a good handle on what's going on in that regard.

I suspect it's been an old-money conspiracy from the beginning with Big10/Pac10 being the puppet masters.

They got together secrectly to see how they could consolidate power and cut up the lowly Big12 to their benefit.

It's slowly playing out just how they envisioned, with panic eventully overtaking reason whereas the poor Big12 members are left scrambling to attach themselves paracitically to the best host conference.

I now see DONU becoming an independent like ND. NOT !

So it looks like there will be 4 superconferences.... could be the making of a Final 4 playoff.

Maybe the only good thing to come of all of this.

Any ideas for the new Big 10+1 name. I like "The Great Lakes Athletic Conference" AKA The GLAC 16. Personally I prefer Glock 22, more stopping power.

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on June 4, 2010 9:48AM CST
BobHe - I am sure the leadership of the conferences would not want it like you wrote, but if all of these schools banded together under "whatever banner", couldn't the "whatever" group demand more $ from the networks?

If this is truly being driven by TV money, why not go to the organization model that could demand the most from the networks?

Once the four super conferences are formed why not merge them together in negotiations for all of that TV revenue just like the National Football League does? Could you imagine the AFC negotiating its own contract, and NFC doing the same?

No, the one league, NFL, does it because they feel it generates the most revenue at this time for all of its member.

Mr. Beebe's comments about negative consequenses means he is about to be out of a job.

Maybe Texas needs a head Janitor.

Some of you old time SWC vets help me out here. I am sure that they had penalties in place for jumping ship. what happened when they dissolved, which is about to happen to the big 12? Pretty hard to pay money to something that does not exist.

Posted by: PlyNeb on June 4, 2010 10:02AM CST
PT

How do you know it doesn't exist? They might be the Big 4. Would be a sweet deal for them.
jk

Posted by: PT Husker on June 4, 2010 10:04AM CST
Ply, they could call themselves "The Lost Conference".

Posted by: Bullmoose06 on June 4, 2010 10:04AM CST
I find it hard to believe that the Big 12 Leadership(?) did not launch some type of attack of its own.

It sounds like, "well nothing can be done so will the last schoolin the confrence please turn out the lights." I at least want to see some sort of a fight or aggressive act by the Big 12.

Go for it Big 12 start your own expansion program. Target Iowa, Arkansas, TCU, LSU and any other school that will be a winner.

BREAKING NFL NEWS: Sources close to the situation have indicated the NFC East will extend offers to the Vikings and Packers to join their division within the next 2 days. With the NFC South also considering inviting the Bears, the NFC Central looks to be in trouble. It appears the Detroit Lions may be the odd team out, and could potentially end up in the Arena League 2.

Essentially, this is what's happening in CFB. It's beyond bizzare that these conferences can do whatever the heck they want without any accountability to anyone.

That is all.

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on June 4, 2010 10:08AM CST
Bullmoose06 - I am with you on your comment. Why did they not try to be proactive and bring schools into the Big XII conference?

I thought your shot at the leadership of the Big XII is justly deserved by that leadership. They are getting exactly what they deserve, removal from the position of leadership.

Mean time the NCAA is taking Reggie Bush's Heisman away and many other meaningful wrist slaps for other equally earth shaking events.

Sheeesh.

Big X11 is a house of cards, shake the table and they all come tumbling down.

Posted by: PlyNeb on June 4, 2010 10:17AM CST
As I understand it the Sun Belt has 12 members. Kansas, KSU, ISU, and Baylor could invite them to join "The Lost Conference." That would result in a 16 team 'Super Conference.'

Posted by: bigcajunhusker on June 4, 2010 10:21AM CST
Dan Beebe sowed the seeds of his own destruction. Talk about complacency. I think the only reason the PAC 10 is making its move now is because it became apparent that MO and NU were not going to pledge fealty to the Big 12. I believe that TO already has his commitment from the Big 10.

We'll see if my prediction is correct.

Posted by: Busiekcreek on June 4, 2010 10:29AM CST
I, for one, would welcome Nebraska with open arms to the SEC. Getting to play the Huskers on a regular basis would be a dream come true. Oklahoma as well. Texas and their arrogant self can go shovel behind Bevo.

Posted by: BobB on June 4, 2010 11:03AM CST
There are about 20 million reasons why Iowa, LSU and Arkansas would laugh at an offer from the Big 12. TCU has minimal TV income and a small fan base, so they would certainly be a candidate for the Big 12 (soon to be the Big 6).

Posted by: Husker_Heat on June 4, 2010 11:24AM CST
Lets say the Big12 wants to fight the fight to say solvent. Which 4 team could, should we bring in? Which 4 teams would actually consider joining, and which 4 teams do we most want? And should they not ALL be from Texas?

1.TCU
2. Colorado St.
3. Tulsa
4. Houston

Now we're our own super conference.

Whada ya think?

Posted by: Husker_Heat on June 4, 2010 11:27AM CST
Taking into account ;Geographically speaking, we don't have a lot to choose from.

Unless we want all 4 from Texass.

Posted by: Husker_Heat on June 4, 2010 11:28AM CST
Are these not the 4 best football schools we have to choose from?

What have I missed?

Posted by: Bullmoose06 on June 4, 2010 11:35AM CST
If the Big 12 leadership had a pair they would at least go down swinging and shoot for the moon. Instead its just leave us Baylor and we can rebuild on the future.

Posted by: Husker_Heat on June 4, 2010 11:55AM CST
Baylor should never have been in the conference to begin with.

It was only UT strong arming everyone to bring Baylor along.
