Beamer: 'Lee kind of like Reesing'
Posted by: Steve Sipple on September 14, 2009 at 12:20PM CST

A few notes from Frank Beamer's teleconference Monday:

-- He praised Nebraska up and down. "Up front, offensively, they're just exceptional," the 23rd-year Virginia Tech head coach said. "They look more athletic and better than even last year, and they were good last year.

"They have a lot of guys catching the ball, and Zac Lee's kind of like the Kansas kid (Todd Reesing), it looks like to me. Good mobility. Very accurate."

He praised the NU running backs. Overall, Nebraska's just a good team, he said. He also noted the Huskers' strength up front on defense.

-- Asked to compare Lee and Joe Ganz, Beamer said, "I think they're very similar. (Lee's) a heady guy out there. Good pocket presence. Very accurate. I think it's a lot the same guy, looks like to me."

-- Junior dual-threat QB Tyrod Taylor threw for 171 yards last season against Nebraska and ran for 91. Taylor continues to develop, the coach said.

"I think he's reading defenses better. Knows where to go with the ball better. Getting it there quicker. Throwing better. I think he's trying to improve all parts of his game."

-- Nebraska won't be the only team with young linebackers in the game. Virginia Tech starts sophomores Jake Johnson and Barquell Rivers along with senior Cam Martin.

"Jake had a few misreads in there (against Marshall), but he goes at it full speed, I'll say that. I think Barquell's been pretty steady. I think they'll improve each and every game."

-- He was asked about Ndamukong Suh. "They're good up front," Beamer said. "That No. 99 out there (Barry Turner), he's good. They're stout up front."

-- It was noted Tech faced Alabama's 6-5, 365-pound NT Terrence Cody in the Hokies' season-opening loss. Comparable to Suh?

"It's more of the same," the coach said. "Big guys who can change the game."

-- What differences does he see in this Nebraska team compared to last year's?

"I was impressed with the one last year. Offensively, they were good. Defensively, I think they're better. I think they've been in the system awhile and understand what's expected. Of course, in the kicking game, they got us on a couple things last year. I was impressed with them last year, and they're a better football team this year."

-- Beamer praised Tech's three main tailbacks, redshirt freshman Ryan Williams, true freshman David Wilson and sophomore Josh Oglesby.

"Both Williams and Wilson, they have a burst to them. They had a good day Saturday. They broke some tackles. Both of them broke several tackles, which you like to see."

"We thought they were going to be good. They're just so young."

-- He reflected on last year's game and praised the Husker program in general.

"If someone said, 'Name the top programs in college football,' Nebraska would be in there."

I like how open and honest he is. He has a great respect for the game even if Beamer Ball = Ugly ball.

Thanks Step, I feel good about my first, first. Next time Ill shout out to you with a BAM!!!

I like Beamer. Quick and to the point.

Posted by: HuskerfromAR on September 14, 2009 12:28PM CST
Beamer is such a class act, regardless, it's still not going to hurt my feelings to beat them in Blacksburg at all. Huskers 35 VaTech 21

Naw man... I don't want you to burn in hell for eternity. I would like your legs taken off in some sort of accident tho.

Don't come near me though, I can still bite your knee caps off! Plus I'll probably beat you too it again as I will only be able to sit around on my computer all day.

"Tis but a flesh wound!"

Posted by: KChusker on September 14, 2009 12:36PM CST
Everyone keeps posting us winning by two touchdowns. We look good, but not great. VT looks good but not great. I am thinking it ends 10 points or closer. My early prediction is 38-31, Beamers boys keep it close by coming up with ugly points ie the Alabama game.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 14, 2009 12:37PM CST
I would like to think we can beat VT's Oline with our front 4.

That will be the key. We don't want to blitz Taylor. If he happens to get through... not many of our guys left. He killed us last year.

Posted by: KChusker on September 14, 2009 12:43PM CST
I think we will have to blitz some, but hopefully more lb blitzes to leave those fast corners/safeties back to catch him if something goes wrong.

I would say the key for us is do the linebackers step up this week. You know the Dline will do its thing and the Secondary is pretty good (especially since Taylor sometimes struggles passing) but the linebackers have to come to play so we can hold it together.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 14, 2009 12:43PM CST
I would equate a win with an escape. by all accounts blacksburg is a tough place to play. And VT has a great record there. Not so much on the road. The atmosphere will not bother Zac but it could get to some of the other puppies. the offenses win the game. and maybe special teams which often happens in the close ones.

Posted by: KChusker on September 14, 2009 12:44PM CST
step your new pic made me think my monitor or the website were freakin out.

Posted by: fleaflicker on September 14, 2009 12:45PM CST
I agree that Beamer is a class act. VT will be ready to rock and roll. They won't make a lot of stupid mistakes. I look for a "come out" game from our defense. IMO it will be a hard hitting fun game to watch. I'm not going to jinx the Huskers by predicting a score (quit predicting after last years Misery game) but the Huskers are moving in the right direction to get a meaningful, road game W. Let'r rip potato chip!!!! Go Huskers!!!!!!

Posted by: India_Husker@USC on September 14, 2009 12:46PM CST
I am nervous for this one.
First, our D started to fall apart with missed tackles and Tech had a field day rushing the ball last week. Tyrod is their version of Jammal Lord.

This is one of those games where we do not need to worry about a blowout, but we can get hurt pretty bad if we lose it. We NEED a W to roll into Missou.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 14, 2009 12:49PM CST
Nice fish Flea. Where did you do that? Not a lake Minitare thats for sure.

Posted by: HuskerfromAR on September 14, 2009 12:50PM CST
Actually, Joey Gunz was more like Reesing than Zac Lee. Zac Lee is more of a Tebow type to me than Todd Reesing. Of course, I like Tebow, and I respect Reesing, but, he does play for KU, therefore, I'm not allowed to like them.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 14, 2009 12:51PM CST
KC))) Truth be told... oddly enough... I changed my avatar then was looking at something else. When I came back to LITR... it did the same thing to me! LOL! I thought I had bad connection or something for a split second!

Posted by: KChusker on September 14, 2009 12:52PM CST
I don't know if Lee is like either. He has a better arm than reesing and may be faster, but he is not as strong as Tebow. I think he is kind of his own specimen which is how it should be.

Posted by: salmon_slayer63 on September 14, 2009 12:54PM CST
we dont want to blitz TT?

its a double edge sword. Bama blitz the daylights out of them. confused the line and sacked him a few times

its also true if he breaks contain bad things happen

Posted by: HuskerfromAR on September 14, 2009 1:01PM CST
KC, I agree, he should be his own, which is Zac Lee. Back to talking about the game, we should be able to basically man up on their WR's, basically putting eight in the box, putting contain on Taylor, eliminating the Running game, forcing Taylor to beat us w/ his arm. From what I understand, he would be lucky to hit a barn w/ a football if he's standing in it. Game Plan: Limit Mistakes, limit the running game, contain Taylor on the run, make Taylor beat us w/ his arm. NU 35, VaTech 21. They don't do so hot in big games in Layne Stadium for some reason, they somehow still manage to win the ACC Title, though and play in a BCS Bowl. Which they will do again for like the 15th year in a row, sarcasm noted

Posted by: TomOs on September 14, 2009 1:02PM CST
It wouldnt be the end of the World ...if we lost.. at least this season anyway.. all that counts to me is the Big 12 North and go from there.. we are in a rebuilding stage.. and rose colored glasses are not what we need.. I think we have a good chance to win at VT.. if things go right.. poise under fire.. I think our O will be really tested and we cant shoot ourselves in the foot and our D will have to play improved... which they are fully capable of doing.. and NO BLOCKED KICKS>>>>^^^^^.... lay some wood on Taylor and young backs and they will make the mistakes.. all said JMO

Posted by: KChusker on September 14, 2009 1:06PM CST
I see what you are saying Tom, but this is a winnable game for us and will boost confidence. It will not be easy and it should be close, but if we execute on offense like we have and our D keeps improving like it has we have a good chance to pull a W. Will I be surprised if we lose... No, but it will be dissappointing none the less.

Ultimately I agree that we are rebuilding and winning the north while competing in every game should be our goals for the year, but the team should also feel it can win every game and play like they feel that way.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 14, 2009 1:08PM CST
I am with ya Tom. this would be a nice win but the North title is far more important. I am still pointing at MIZZU as must win.

Posted by: TomOs on September 14, 2009 1:10PM CST
I dont think it would be a bad idea to have a spy on Taylor, like Eric Hagg, part of the time.. to try and neutralize him abit..

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on September 14, 2009 1:12PM CST
You can't let TT get comfortable in the pocket. He makes poor decisions when pressured as most QBs do. Gotta smack him in the mouth early and often, keep him rattled and let the DBs cover one on one. A defining game for Suh & Co. Make TT beat you with his arm. He was successful in Lincoln against a confused defense. Shouldn't be the same on Saturday.
GBR!

Posted by: Bucksker on September 14, 2009 1:12PM CST
Step.
I noticed Coach Beamer is impressed with Barry Turner's play and if I am recalling correctly from another thread you may have expressed some concern about our D-end play. You are usually spot on. Do you think there was a D-end assignment change that concealed their effectiveness?

Posted by: TomOs on September 14, 2009 1:17PM CST
Most years, the good ones, the sacks came from the DE's.. this year it seems like the push comes up from the middle.. on the QB..

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on September 14, 2009 1:18PM CST
Coach speak, I think our D end play so far has been subpar. They lose containment too often and miss tackles on the outside. Better step it up Saturday.

Posted by: charger on September 14, 2009 1:19PM CST
i would imagine that Suh has a burr in his girdel pants. there will be some heat.

TT might be nervous if he sees the picture of Suh launching himself at that QB from behind. what a effort play.

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on September 14, 2009 1:21PM CST
Charger,
You're right. I've watched a ton of college games this year and I haven't seen anyone cover the field like Suh. I think he's had this game in his head for a year now. Should be fun to watch.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 14, 2009 1:23PM CST
I would say VT is the favorite. But that doesn't mean we won't go in there and beat them.

Yesterday the Eagles were down 7-3. Then they got the sack/recovery/TD. Then kicked off and and held them 3 & out and returned the punt for a TD. Then they kicked off and got an INT and returned it to the 10. Scored again. IT was 24-7 in about 5 minutes.

I was thinking thats just how VT does it when I was watching. It's not all about their O when talking about points scored. They can score on you in many ways.

Two things you know you're going to get when playing VT. 1) Bud Foster will bring a scheme that will get guys in your backfield. 2) VT's passing game will be nothing if you can stop their run.

Posted by: TomOs on September 14, 2009 1:25PM CST
Crick and Suh ... cannot overplay their positions.. will create seams.. VT will play that to their advantage on certain down and distances.. last game Suh played well but somtimes it appeared got too deep and backs cut behind them.. JMO after 6 beers

Posted by: Busiekcreek on September 14, 2009 1:25PM CST
Va Tech players get up in the morning and put on their fruit of the looms just like everybody else. Their fans are loud and supportive; Bo knows this going in and I am sure they are prepared for it. This is Nebraska. Let them know early on that Big Red flung the chunk.

Posted by: BleedingRed on September 14, 2009 1:28PM CST
We need to force Taylor to beat us with his arm...which will not happen.

They are absolutely going to come after us on defense.

I have seen what Watson can do. He is a freaking magician calling plays.

If we keep them off balance and stay unpredictable we will have a very nice victory.

Posted by: BleedingRed on September 14, 2009 1:31PM CST
Our LB's are going to be such a HUGE key this Saturday.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 14, 2009 1:31PM CST
Special teams. And points scored off of them. Does Bo have no confidence in Anyone other than Niles Paul???? I know he housed one last year but 95% of the time he is average at best. He is very sure handed however and that is important.

Thoughts from all you experts.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 14, 2009 1:32PM CST
Buckster))) Whats he supposed to say? "We can beat him?" jk

I'm sure Beamer not only watched the last game... but all the rest of them in which Turner has played... in the past seasons.

I love our DE's. I was just pointing out that neither Turner nor Allen played to the level that they can imo. I thought both of our DE's were not setting the corner well at all. And not much in the pass rush department. But I think both of our guys can play.

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on September 14, 2009 1:33PM CST
On our side of the ball, we much establish a credible run threat this year to hold them in the box. Their first priority will be to limit us to a passing team they were so effective at last year. Time for a little smash mouth!

Posted by: charger on September 14, 2009 1:33PM CST
Step,
Do you think in this last game some defensive preperations were made for VT? Thus causing the LB to think too much instead of reacting to the play and hand?

Posted by: charger on September 14, 2009 1:34PM CST
play at hand
dang it

Posted by: BleedingRed on September 14, 2009 1:36PM CST
PT Husker,

I see it differently. Niles has not had a tremendous amount of opportunity to break a return. They have just not lined up right yet.

I absolutely think that he is more than capable of doing so and in a game like this mistakes are going to be crucial.

There is no one else that I would want returning kicks for this game than Niles Paul.

Posted by: fleaflicker on September 14, 2009 1:36PM CST
PT Husker.......thanks... Ling Cod out of Seward, Alaska.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 14, 2009 1:37PM CST
I know how Alabama beat VT. But imo thats not how we should do it. It's a totally different scheme. Different players. We want Taylor throwing into our Zone. We want our players facing him. We want to get to him with 4.

If we had Bamas CB's and S's. We might want to blitz the s*** out of him also. But... we don't.

Posted by: charger on September 14, 2009 1:38PM CST
Pt
why ya want to bag on Paul? :) Don't ya know that they are talking about him to open up the other guys. :)

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 14, 2009 1:39PM CST
That said... I'm sure we'll throw some stuff at him and if it wokrs... you will see more of it. Guaranteed.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 14, 2009 1:42PM CST
charger))) Not sure what was up with our LB's. I expected more from them also. They looked lost. Certainly slow to react. Hard to say though. They should play better this week.

Posted by: fleaflicker on September 14, 2009 1:44PM CST
Busie.....point well taken. It's time for the Huskers to have a little swagger and go to Blacksburg and win the dam game. Just play like they've been coached and we'll win!!!

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 14, 2009 1:45PM CST
You like how I snuck that plug in for my Eagles? I likened them to VT. Thats pretty good huh?

Posted by: PT Husker on September 14, 2009 1:45PM CST
Not baggen. Just wondering. I like him on the kickoff for sure. And His hands are crucial on the Punt returns. Just don't want to kill the guy. He is a busy boy. Nice to see him break out saturday BTW. And we do have others with equal speed. Not the EXP though.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 14, 2009 1:48PM CST
Speaking of the Kicking game, Alex is doing a great job as punter. Good hang time. Minimal returns. Nice Job.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 14, 2009 1:48PM CST
Welp.... I'm out... gonna grab some lunch. I bid you all adieu.

Posted by: charger on September 14, 2009 1:54PM CST
I'm sitting here daydreaming that Gilleylen gets loose down the seam on our first possession, and the stadium goes dead silent except for the Big Red fans. GBR

Posted by: fleaflicker on September 14, 2009 1:56PM CST
I bet that Coach Carl and Bo are picking the LB's brain to learn the thought processes that the LB's used last game. IMO the Huskers are going to really work on getting a fast start, smacking these guys in the chops early to establish ourselves.
I wonder if May is still suffering from the stinger........anyother guys hurt?

Posted by: PT Husker on September 14, 2009 1:56PM CST
And their announcer and the TV guys get tounge tied trying to say his name. :)

Posted by: charger on September 14, 2009 1:57PM CST

But we are just fine now. I did watch the game Saturday on PFV. Will be making comments about that game. Looking forward to the game with VT.

I do appreciate your concerns. That's what makes husker fans special.

I/H,

Good to know you're doing well.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on September 14, 2009 3:22PM CST
Beemer made some comparisions to of Lee to Reesing. I think though that Lee has a much better arm that Reesing, though Reesing might be a better runner. Lee has a much better arm than Ganz had. He can really zip it and has a quick release. Any pass over 30 years Ganz had problems with, and he did have a tendency to throw floaters, which so far Lee has not.

I do think Lee would have still the #1 QB if Witt had stayed. And I think Witt knew that, being the smart guy he is.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on September 14, 2009 3:24PM CST
We will know a whole heckuva lot more about Lee after he faces the pressure of a big time road game against a big time D this Saturday.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on September 14, 2009 3:26PM CST
So now that you have seen 2 games......does Va Tech have the players on the front four to stop NU's run or will they have to load the box and use blitzes to stop the run and try and get pressure on Lee?

Posted by: BleedingRed on September 14, 2009 3:31PM CST
Low Country,

They had better hope that they are able to stop the run with their front line or it is going to get ugly for them.

VT has seen two films. One of a team which played base or cover which got burned by Roy, Cody, and Rex.

Then they saw a film of a team which sold out to stop our running game and watched Zac dissect them like a biology class fetal pig.
Pick your poison or tell yourself your athletes are good enough to sit in base and make plays. Although after reading about the VT defense in the link above I believe they will disguise their looks and hope they can trick the Huskers into bad decisions. JMO

I loved Ganz as a QB, but after 2 games the only thing Ganz did better than Lee is throw the ball on the run out of the pocket. Ganz was probably the best in the country at that.

Disclaimer- that is only based on a sample size of 2. We'll see how Lee does under some serious pressure this weekend.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on September 14, 2009 3:42PM CST
This game is on the road, playing in a very difficult place. For a lot of our players this will be their first time playing on the road, so it will be interesting to see how they handle it. And yes we will learn alot about Lee in this game.

Posted by: Father of future Husker on September 14, 2009 4:11PM CST
Reesing wouldn't have to scramble so much if he could make the throws like Lee does.

The real question is where does Lee rank with the best QBs in the Big 12 right now?

Here's my rankings...(no Bradford for now)

1. Colt McCoy

2. Zac Lee

3. Taylor Potts

4. Todd Reesing

5. Blaine Gabbert

6. Robert Griffin

7. Jerrod Johnson

8. Zac Robinson

9. Landry Jones

10. Austin Arnaud

11. Hawkins

12. Coffman

Boy thats a tough thing to do right now....A few of those boys have only played 2 games against sub par competition. I guess if you take the level of competition out of the equation you're pretty close. I would go-

1 Colt McCoy

2 Zac Robinson

3 Robert Griffin

4 Zac Lee

5 Taylor Potts

6 Todd Reesing

7 Blaine Gabbert

8 Landry Jones

9 Jerrod Johnson

10 Austin Arnaud

11 Carson Coffman

12 Little Hawk

Just watching the free portion of the ASU game at Huskers.com again quickly. Watch the first play (pass to McNeill over middle) and pay attention to how open Helu is in the flat. I'm not saying Zac made the wrong read, but holy crap.

Father of Future Husker.....I like your list a lot better than blackshirt_retrievers. Zac Lee is the real deal. McCoy has the experience but I wouldn't want to trade Zac for any of those QB's listed. The dude has IT. Coach Watson has done a great job bringing Zac along and obviously Zac paid attention to details last year when he was a back up.

Exiled, He had multiple recievers open all day. As did Cody green in his short stint. Including B R A N D O N K I N N IE. Who dropped the ball.

We have some things to shore up but it isn't QB!!! Zac, with more game experience, vision will widen to see more of the field. What blows me away is his pin point accuracy.

i can see where he gets that comparison but lee can scramble much better the size and speed is greater with Zac i cant wait for the vt game hopefully zac will make Tyrod look like a fool!!

I see your point flea but I was trying to be unbiased on my choices. As far as I'm concerned Zac has shown he has a great arm, but and a big BUT is the fact he has done a great job when playing inferior teams. Do I think he could be one of the best in this league? Yes, keyword being COULD of course. He has to show me he can do it when it matters before I say he is god and bow down. If he plays even close to how he played last week against va tech and mizzou, I'll bump him up that list a few spots. till then, as Bo says "he aint done nothin yet"

Exiled_VT........We'll know a lot more about the whole Husker team, with all the young uns, after the VT game.........not just Lee.

Flea, were you at the game this weekend?

Posted by: bruNo on September 14, 2009 5:06PM CST
we gotta get up on these guys and score some points and then bring the D. Yhese guys always win ugly, and we have to get Tyrod in a situation where he's playing catch up in a big way.

barring a beamer ball play (int return td, blocked kick, etc), this game will be a tossup - the plan is fairly simple in scheme I would think...stop their running game and make Tyrod beat you throwing, and establish a run game while on offense, and dont get burned on a special teams play. Tech feeds off Beamer Ball plays more then any team I have ever seen..they can be getting dominated and then make one play like that and it turns their entire team around...also, I think it is important for us to get out and score first....gonna be fun and I will be there at Lane stadium...I cant wait!

on another note, I was very surprised that tech opened up at minus 3...i expected more like 7-8...but it does go to show you that the huskers are getting more respect out there in the public eye then in years past.....

But first you must chop down the tallest tree in the forest...wiiiith a Herring!!

I think our Defensive ends need to keep outside containment a little better this week and funnel things back inside...never ever give up the edge man, never.

Throw the guy blocking you to the ground or into the stands and make the play.

The young LB's need to be aware of cutback lanes and not over pursue , better angles to the ball...but I see the talent, it's there and will get better with experience for sure.

And the thankyou for posting just isn't doing it for me.

I need more incentive, something like "most excellent post, you are excellent in every way, we'll post that right away and here's two tickets to the game most excellent poster"

Or a virtual pat on the back...yep the thank you for posting is just kind of annoying without any bells n whistles.
