An honor just to be nominated, really

No word if he can get Billy Crystal or Steve Martin to host a black-tie affair on this deal, but ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit has compiled his 10th annual "Herbie Awards."

Bo Pelini and Nebraska's secondary receive plenty of love from Herbstreit.

Hebstreit ranks Nebraska's secondary No. 5 among position groups, behind North Carolina's linebackers, Alabama's backfield, Iowa's defensive line and Arkansas' wide receivers.

He ranks DeJon Gomes No. 3 among his most instinctive players in a category he calls "Nose for the ball."

Herbstreit rates Prince Amukamara as the second-best cornerback in college football, behind LSU's Patrick Peterson.

Amukamara also makes the All-Herbie Team, along with Alex Henery as the team's kicker/punter. This was one list Jared Crick did not crack.

Perhaps most interesting, Herbstreit slots Pelini in a three-way tie for first among college football's top defensive minds, sharing the top spot with Nick Saban and Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

Herbstreit also ranks Pelini among his Top 12 most candid coaches.

And if you go by Herbstreit's rankings, there's all sorts of reasons to be fascinated by Nebraska's Sept. 18 game to Washington.

He ranks Washington quarterback Jake Locker as the No. 1 "ultimate game-changer" and Husky coach Steve Sarkisian as the No. 1 playcaller.

So that's the top playcaller pitted against the top defensive mind. Enjoy that game of chess.

But Herbstreit won't go as far as his cohort Lee Corso and project Nebraska in this year's BCS Championship game.

He picks Oklahoma over NU in the Big 12 title game, then has the Sooners falling to Ohio State for all the marbles.

It would be interesting to see where Henery would land on Herbie's list. He's as close to an offensive player as we had last year. I'm hoping he does another list after the season to see how close he really was. I'm hoping Paul, Helu, Rex and others could make their presence known by then.

The candid coaches segment was list alphabetically. Not by rank. Just so happens that p follows 15 other letters.

Also from the "worldwide leader": KSU has named Chase Coffman as their QB. Quoting from their Big XII blog:

"That means the Big 12 has just one team that hasn't settled on of its starting quarterback -- or at least, hasn't made its decision known: Nebraska.

But look around the Big 12. Kansas, Texas Tech and now Kansas State all went with the starter who had more experience. The only exception is Colorado, but last season, Tyler Hansen played more than the older player he beat out, Cody Hawkins, and was the heavy favorite to retain his starting spot after coach Dan Hawkins reopened the competition in spring.

Tommy Tuberville eschewed a fan favorite (Steven Sheffield) when the more experienced candidate (Taylor Potts) outperformed his competition on the closest thing to game day, preseason scrimmages. Even a few snaps from 2009 as a freshman were enough to give Kale Pick the edge over Jordan Webb at Kansas.

Which is why if anyone in Nebraska is still hoping to see Cody Green or Taylor Martinez trot out to open the season against Western Kentucky on Saturday, they should be prepared for disappointment. Zac Lee's offseason surgery on his throwing arm allowed Green and Martinez to creep up and close the gap in the spring.

His experience has likely widened it this fall."

I think having a coach who played at the same school as Herbstreit is going to help the Huskers get some props on National TV.

Devil, your attention to detail is staggering...

"CANDID COACHES (arranged alphabetically)"

right there on top, in big, bold letters.

Kirk will be all Corn after we beat Miami in the BCS Title Game...or long before that game, actually.

Posted by: drivebyposter on August 30, 2010 3:42PM CST
Phil Steele says the Corn has the 76th toughest schedule in the nation. With that ranking, a loss or two ain't gonna be good for the polls.

Posted by: HuskerfromAR on August 30, 2010 3:54PM CST
You are have right as well as Corso, NU vs OSU for all the marbles. NU will win the NC this year. The "O" will be ranked in the top 15 and "D" will be ranked in top 5 in all major categories. NU will not lose a game all year

Herbstreit picks Ohio St to win it all -- what are the odds!

Some of his choices are laughable. Best band? You can pick five and you don't list Texas A&M?

Best student section -- #3 LSU? Are you kidding? Your standard must be, then, to have the drunkest, most foul-mouthed louts you can find. I know -- I have a degree from LSU! Not a place to take your family. The antithesis of NU. The words "class" and "LSU student" (and 99% of LSU fans) don't belong in the same zip code.

Well, here's to TMart lighting up this college game and turning all these lists on their heads.

Tmart will not start,
Green will not be seen,
Zac Lee it will be,

Lions rookie defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh grabbed Jake Delhomme's face mask, twisted it, wrapped his arms around the Browns quarterback's head and slammed him to the ground.

It was hard to watch - in real time or instant replay.

The Browns hope the NFL looks at it again.

Cleveland coach Eric Mangini expects the league to review Suh's rough treatment of Delhomme in Saturday's exhibition game in Detroit.

In the second quarter, Delhomme was scrambling out of the pocket when he was grabbed by Suh, the No. 2 overall pick in April's draft. Suh flung the 35-year-old to the ground, and Delhomme got up waving his arms in protest. Suh was assessed a 15-yard penalty for the infraction, which seemed severe enough to warrant an ejection.

Mangini said at his news conference Monday that he will ask the league to investigate the play, but he assumed it would do so anyway.

League spokesman Gregg Aiello said in an e-mail the play was being reviewed.

"I was just going after the ball, and I had no clue that he had gotten rid of it," Suh said. "I don't know what to expect from the league. I've gotten personal fouls before, but that was in college, and they can't fine you there."

Ban the Bam!

Good for Suh. Just can't rack up these types of infractions. I hate QBs too as a generality. DONU generally along with Oklahoma really only had the kind of tough individuals playing QB that I could really respect as Football players.

And that goes for kickers/punters, too. Sorry Alex, you're a heck of a kicker but please don't go getting hurt trying to play football and tackle someone. We need your leg.

Kickers and QBs drove me nuts.

BTW, I'm glad I'm not Suh because with that kind of strength and athleticism I would have torn off Delhomme's helmet...with his head in it.

Must be that time of the year for me...hehe he

Lions' Ndamukong Suh hardly apologetic after personal foul call against Browns

Anybody else wonder what Colt was thinking as we watched from the sidelines while Suh tossed around Delhomme??? Nightmare flashbacks?

Posted by: big red 1 on August 30, 2010 8:29PM CST
Mark: That's funny but probably true. I think the nfl's QB'S have been put on notice by big SSSSUUUUUUEEEEEE>

Delhomme comes over to the sidelines:
Jake: "Damn...who were those guys?"
Colt: "Umm...been there, done that..."
