Talking Aggies
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on July 8, 2010 at 1:17PM CST
The finish line for our preseason opponent previews is now in sight. Our latest preview focuses on Mike Sherman's Texas A&M Aggies.

The Huskers play Texas A&M on Nov. 20 in College Station -- one of the toughest (and coolest) environments in all of college football.

If I were to make a list of things I will miss about the Big 12, the A&M band would be on the list. You don't have to be an Aggie to experience a spine-tingling moment when they start up The Aggie War Hymn. I remember the first time the A&M band came to Lincoln and performed at halftime. Hardly anyone left their seats to get a Runza or use the restroom or whatever. People just watched the band.

Anyway, before I start going all John Philip Sousa on you and start critiquing the movie "Drumline" or something, we'll switch gears to the A&M football team.

The game against the Aggies falls on an interesting date for both teams. Both teams will have a short week after the game. A&M plays Texas just five days after the Nebraska game, and the Huskers play Colorado six days after the contest.

A&M is coming off a 6-7 season in which the Aggies went 3-5 in the conference. The Aggies lost 44-20 in the Independence Bowl to Georgia.

If you're talking Aggies, you're going to spend a lot of breath on quarterback Jerrod Johnson -- the straw that stirs this team's drink.

Johnson threw for more than 3,500 yards and tacked on an additional 500 rushing. He threw 30 touchdowns to just eight interceptions. And you might remember how he gave Texas fits last Thanksgiving in a 49-39 Longhorns win.

Also impressive last year in his freshman season was running back Christine Michael. He led the team with 767 rushing yards and nine TDs. Baylor knows who he is. He had a 97-yard touchdown against the Bears.

A&M does have some retooling to do on its offensive line. The Aggies have to replace center Kevin Matthews and starting tackles Michael Shumard and Lee Grimes. But the playmakers are there.

A&M offense ... good. A&M defense ... bad. At least that's how it was in 2009.

The Aggies were fifth in the country in total offense, but 105th in total defense. Returning linebacker Von Miller is a stud. The man had 18 sacks last year. But he was one of the few bright spots.

A&M had the worst defense in the Big 12. The Aggies gave up more than 40 points five times. They gave up 65 to Oklahoma and 62 to ... wait for it ... Kansas State.

But A&M does have a new defensive coordinator in Tim DeRuyter. Previously at the Air Force Academy, DeRuyer is installing a 3-4 defense at A&M.

The Aggies had an extremely young football team last year so the hope in College Station is that a year's worth of maturation will lead this program to the next step.

Sherman certainly hopes so. In his two years as head coach, he has a 10-15 record.

Obviously, we don't know what might be at stake when these two teams meet, but I view this as one of Nebraska's toughest challenges. You might remember the last time the Huskers traveled to College Station in 2006.

The Huskers blew a lead only to have Zac Taylor and Maurice Purify come to the rescue.

Might have to make the trip down to College Station this year. Could be fun.

Big game. Fortunately, Bo thrives in November.

Posted by: Denver Bob on July 8, 2010 1:35PM CST
Aggies most improved in the South, CU in the North.

GBR!

How sweet would it be to beat A&M, the whorns and then beat Oklahoma in the final Big Xll title game?

Posted by: Outside The Box on July 8, 2010 1:41PM CST
Remember how last year everyone thought we would walk into a trap at Baylor (and probably would have if Griffin was healthy)?

Take that feeling and multiply it by three for A&M. They'll be good on offense and by November they should have most of the kinks worked out of the new D.

Could be trouble...

College Station is one of the great venues in College Football. Watching the Cadet band march at halftime alone is worth driving to see.

Posted by: boom.roasted on July 8, 2010 1:45PM CST
I'm actually glad this game is in November. A&M might have worked out some kinks in their defense by then, but they hadn't done that last year, by the time they played Texas.

Meanwhile, our defense has steadily improved through November in each of the past two seasons, and that will happen again this year. It might be the best offense in the Big 12 vs. the best defense in the Big 12, and Bo will have the Blackshirts ready to go.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on July 8, 2010 1:48PM CST
Bo's teams always seem to play their best in October and November. Yeah, we can't let our guard down, but think we will take care of business at College Station.

The band is the best. Always liked the Aggies.

Especially when they beat Texas. They should have taken that SEC offer.

Posted by: Busiekcreek on July 8, 2010 1:57PM CST
I've seen the aTm band when they used to play the Tigers. Same thing down here. Everybody would stay in their seats to watch the band.

I should not have clicked on Red Around The World link on last thread. This football fever just hit overdrive. ESPN has got to do Game
Day in Lincoln for that game.

Kyle Field and the band are vastly overrated. But at least they have a dog cemetary right by the field and a para-military run campus. The Aggies are an f'ed up group and the ONLY thing I'll back UT fans on. Back in 2003 a "soldier" pulled his sword on a NU fan because he was on the corner of the field after the game. And the yell leader thing? Wow....ridiculous.

Posted by: joe t on July 8, 2010 2:03PM CST
Correction....played them down there in 2002.

Posted by: PT Husker on July 8, 2010 2:09PM CST
There is not a team on this schedule that scares me. Not even a bit. Not sayen we will beat them all but it is not out of the realm. Not a bit.

As long as this game is not a "battle of the bands" we will be fine.

Posted by: boom.roasted on July 8, 2010 2:23PM CST
It's kinda funny how much people like the A&M band... They're really nothing special, except that they're enormous. Kinda like how Ohio State's band is nothing terribly special, but they dot the "i," so everyone knows them. Nothing wrong with it, but they're not better than everyone else, and they're not really much better if at all than Nebraska's band, they just have a stronger identity.

Posted by: drivebyposter on July 8, 2010 2:24PM CST
joe,

If their band is overrated, then all other bands must be jes turrible or worse.
I heard a "red" pulled a corncob on an a&m fan the last time they visited Lincoln.

The aggie school is a fine institution. A little military upbringing never hurt anyone. And it is rated higher than UNL in academics.

Anyway the band is great.

Every person I know who has gone to College Station has come back raving about the Aggie band and the great atmosphere in general. All this time in Texas, and I've still never made it there. Maybe this year.

Posted by: boom.roasted on July 8, 2010 2:30PM CST
I guess their success as a band just goes to show that success as an entertainer depends less on overall ability and creativity and more on vibe and identity.

Not trying to knock A&M's band, just saying they're not in some other world compared to the Nebraska or Texas or Oklahoma bands, and the Kansas band was pretty darn good last time I saw them.

Posted by: bigcajunhusker on July 8, 2010 2:32PM CST
Joe T -- well, it is a good thing you have the anonymity of this forum to trash talk like that. To paraphrase the oft-viewed you-tube of Bill Byrne responding recently to such talk, you don't talk like that around College Station and not expect to get your can kicked.

My son and son-in-law were in the Corps of Cadets, and together they are 4 times the man you are.

The reason why the Corps guards the field is that it is a MEMORIAL, as are many places on the A&M campus. God bless the Corps for not allowing opposing fans to run on it, and I know very few NU fans who would even think of doing such a thing. I was at the last NU victory there (Taylor. Purify. Touchdown.), and not only were the Aggie fans extremely respectful toward NU, it went the other way as well.

As much as I despise UT, they would never think of trying to set foot on Kyle Field.

This is one team I will sorely miss NU playing. I will be at the game on Nov 20, for sure. I will have on a Nebraska jersey and and an A&M cap, or vice versa, for I have children attending both, and I will not catch any grief when I cheer for NU, unlike many places.

So I hear you're backing out of the LITR Open now?

Your spot in the foursome was reserved. Guess Stepn will Stepn.

You must be a little skerred to some play? That's jus turribl.

If the TX game is indeed a night game, and you planted the seeds well as you have said....you should have no excuses to not make the golf.

Maybe improper "Niles" watering?

Wrong fertilizer?

Not weeding enough?

C & C it.

Drum and bugle corps type Bands always are impressive.

Maybe becasue I have been listening to the NU band play the same songs for years and years I do not appreciate them as much as I should.

Suffice it to say I stayed in my seat when they were here.

Posted by: Trashman on July 8, 2010 2:50PM CST
PT

But was staying sat down done intentionally?

Posted by: Bornhusker on July 8, 2010 3:04PM CST
I've been to A&M and it IS a cool place with great fans full of compliments for the Huskers -- even after they beat us. One of my favorite road trips ever.

We all know that bringing in the right DC can cure a horrible defense and I expect they'll be much improved.

Don't ever take a game at Kyle Field for granted. They'll give everybody a real fight there.

The three teams that I like in the Big 12 are Kansas, Texas A & M, and Oklahoma.

Turner Gill at Kansas helps a bunch, but I liked them before that, with their beautiful campus and laid back style.

Same with A & M. Bill Byrne did a good job here, and he has done nothing to tarnish the Aggie image, unlike his successor at Nebraska.

Oklahoma is another class act which has treated us right for a long time whether it was Switzer or his several successors to the throne.

The rest of them won't be missed much, if any.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on July 8, 2010 3:35PM CST
But, will we have a QB by November 20th? Oh, never mind, PT said that he would try out for the team. Watch out Aggies!

Posted by: salmon_slayer63a on July 8, 2010 3:59PM CST
i think it could be a really, really tough game. should be fun winning late in the 4th quarter

Posted by: drivebyposter on July 8, 2010 4:16PM CST
Trash,

Not sure who Dbuck is.
I am planning on being there, assuming you can get your act together and get a defined date. So even if she does not show, perhaps you can still have at least one foursome of all your friends.

Unlike you I cannot just pick up and leave on a moments notice. No wonder you thong it.

Go big General. Senior starter or inexperienced soph?

Bo knows.

Posted by: drivebyposter on July 8, 2010 4:33PM CST
Ubben is a texas goofball. We all know the General is The Very Best

One time.... and I think I told this story before.... but I was drunk one night... walking through the aNm campus... and I started across this field... and all of a sudden... about 10-15 of those military cadets they have at aNm... came out of nowhere and drew some effin swords on me. Told me I was on some sort of sacred ground. They escorted me off the grass... unstabbed.

Posted by: Trashman on July 8, 2010 5:03PM CST
D-Buck

So Ubben says the General could not make the Top 9 QBs in the Big 12?

That's really odd after he obviously won us all those games last year.

Sheesh of the day.

There is no act to get together.

There are no home game times set vs a Big 12 opponent/during the weekend/during decent golfing season and/or near a holiday.

Until kickoff times start coming out, there is little the LJS or I can do as far as scheduling.

Plan for 10/16.

You are in.

I'll be in College Station Nov 20 with Houstonians for Huskers and we'll be cheering on our Blackshirt Defense! I'm an Aggie-ex myself and I know how bad these guys want to be a better football program. They love football out there too but unfortunately they haven't been up to par with their liberal counterparts in Austin. It's gonna be a tough game and I hope that our defense inspires them after we beat them and they get motivated to kick Texas right in the bull-hole! Go Huskers! Go Big Red!

Posted by: Big Red77845 on July 11, 2010 5:36PM CST
I am excited for this game for two reasons. First, the game in 2006 was the very first game my daughter and I watched together...she was 37 hours old and the time...Secondly, having just reitred from the Army after 26 years, I will be employed at A&M as a Military Science Instructor. I can't wait to see all the Big Red faithful when they roll into town.
