A history lesson for OU players
Posted by: Steve Sipple on November 3, 2009 at 8:15AM CST

Bob Stoops was asked in what ways the coming of the Big 12 impacted the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry, now that the teams play only twice every four years.

Does it diminish the intensity of the rivalry?

"I think there's no question it's changed," he said. "It's different. You think back in the old Big Eight days. For so many years it was Oklahoma and Nebraska at the top of the league and battling at the end of the season every year.

"There's no denying the difference now that it's changed and you don't play every year, and you're not in the same division. All of that has changed it to some degree."

Are young players aware of the history of the rivalry?

"We always put it in front of them," Stoops said. "But young guys in today's world, history's a year or two. But you do your best to educate them on it. You like to them to understand where the rivalry used to be and the tradition of it."

This stirs the pot of who our biggest rival is now. For me it will be whoever is in our way to the North crown. GBR!

ever since the big 12 started, i've kind of looked at colorado as a rivalry game. always the day after thanksgiving, national television, and lets face it this past decade there have been some pretty good games. maybe not the top 10 matchups. i think there has only been one matchup this decade like that. but hawkins comments in his first year were great. but thats only my take.

When it comes to rivalries, let's skip 200 posts of speculation and go straight to T.O. (via Huskers.com):

"A month ago, a Huskers.com poll asked fans to name Nebraska's biggest rival in football. A total of 12,310 of you cast a vote, and 7,159 - or 58 percent said Oklahoma is the biggest rival. Colorado and Missouri each received 19 percent of the total vote with CU edging Mizzou by 80 votes - 2,376 to 2,296. Kansas (228 votes) finished fourth with 2 percent of the vote, and K-State (131) and Iowa State (120) each garnered 1 percent.

Rivalries, Osborne said, cannot be declared like Colorado tried to do with Nebraska when he was still the head coach. They must be earned through tradition, a consistently high level of play and an acknowledgement from both schools that they are indeed rivals."

This rivalry ended the day the big 12 started. If you ask Sooner fans who their rivals are NU isn't in the conversation anymore.

As far as history lessons go, I would just prefer that it be a new and positive lesson in history this Saturday (from a Husker perspective), rather than history repeating itself from last year.

I'm having a difficult time putting on my "overly optimistic" face this week because of the struggles the offense has experienced lately in trying to find the end-zone on a consistent basis.

IMO (for what it's worth), NU needs to finish at least +2 in turnover margin to make it competitive.

Oklahoma's offense doesn't appear to be so overwhelming that Suh, Crick and the NU defense can't handle it either - but they are definitely better than Iowa State or Baylor's offense.

The first team to get 20 points should win.

Outside the Box/TO are absolutely right!! Sadly in these days the press has assumed that it is they who get to determine the rivalries. In their eyes, if it is a big game on TV and the teams play on a regular basis, it is a rivalry... Even if the players schools and fans do not view it as such. Wait and see, on Sat nite, Pussburger and Herbie will try and reference the old rivalry as much as possible...

ON a side note...
I find it funny that they both seemed so down on OU when they were playing against Miami, because I am sure that OU will be the golden child on Sat night and NU will be the red headed step child.

To be a rivalry both opponents have to win once in awhile. I guess that makes K-State, Mizzou or Colorado more valid rivals.
That said, there isn't a Team in the North that should call a South Division Team their biggest rival. Oh maybe BAYLOR should claim a North Division team as their rival.

Thank Texas and their power grab of both the Big 8 and the old SWC then hammering them together into the BIG 12 for destroying one of the truly great college football rivalries.

I hate the Big 12, always have, always will. I for one would like to see us tell those arrogant southern dickweeds to kiss our arse and move to the Big 10/11. (Yes, I know of all the problems making that happen and how improbable that would be but a guy can dream can't he?)

If you had to lose... who would you rather lose to?

CU or OU?

Wonder if the tanned young man standing behind Osborne in the picture above had any inkling at that time that someday he would be called by many the best DC in the NFL?

Nebraska - Oklahoma rivalry will return to it's glory days if each team can achieve the kind of consistency they had before. If Nebraska and Oklahoma play every year for the Big 12 Championship in December, the rivalry will take care of itself.

look at young tom osborne! great pic of him in his youth.
the rivalry will never be the same b/c we've fallen way off from the days when it was 1 against 2 and usually the winner played for the national title. we've got a long way to go to get back to that level.

as far as the game goes i think lee should start. i'd like to see the original starters out there and see what happens. if they cant produce and the defense is holding i'd sub as needed til something gives. i dont wanna see a repeat of last years game. it was over in the first 5 mins.
bo whatever u do no bubble screens, no wr screens please!!

Rivalry, there never was a rivalry. OKLAHOMA usually won all the games. Nu only won one out of five games played. I would not say that is a rivalry. Nu thinks they are up there with Oklahoma but, Nu is just a fart in the wind.
Hey guys basketball starts to night. This is the time NU can really shine. They can show that this state is made up of basketball fans.
