Stadium expansion: "A good level of demand"
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on June 8, 2010 at 8:46PM CST
Here comes more expansion talk. Stadium expansion.

Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne was asked about possible expansion to Memorial Stadium by Lane Grindle on the Husker Sports Network on Tuesday night.

"The first thing you want to do before you start making plans is find out if anyone really wants you to expand the stadium," Osborne said. "So we have done some preliminary work and there is a good level of demand. Skyboxes, probably in the range of 20. Probably club seats in the range of 1,000. And probably safely another 4,000 or 5,000 general seats. So that's something that I think makes sense economically to us because that generates money.

"But on the other hand you have to look at the fact that the university is going to be experience a very tight budget this next biennium. And even though we would not take state tax dollars to do this, there's always the issue of perception. If things are going to be tight in every department at the university, is this going to be something you could do, should do. And so these are decisions that I can't make. Frankly, we're part of the university and we want to be good players in terms of what the university wants to do.

"So all we can do is do our homework at this point, find out that there seems to be a very solid demand and then look at the numbers. So where we go on this I don't know. But it does appear that it would be viable. It does appear that it would be something that financially makes sense for us."

any talk of a "Husker sports network" should the Big 12 stay together?

Man I love Memorial Stadium! Great picture!

Rather than adding another piecemeal expansion, the stadium should be torn down and replaced with a modern structure holding 100,000 fans with plenty of parking. That could cooincide with the big allignment decision to stay put, which is coming sooner or later.

Ray: I don't want to see the stadium torn down. Too many good memories.

they're never going to tear memorial stadium down.

ever.

We all knew the next expansion would be to east stadium. I say let's get the crowd up to 90,000 to create an even greater home field advantage!! Go Huskers!!

They should easily pay for the stadium expansion with all of the extra Big 10 TV money.

Posted by: boom.roasted on June 8, 2010 9:57PM CST
they should design the renovations so that it changes the acoustics of the stadium to make it even louder on the field.

I'm not sure if this is accurate (since I'm not really sure where to find the actual numbers) but it's always seemed to me (even more now with the north expansion) that there are more people seated in the endzones vs the sideline. Which, to me, is kinda stupid (if true).

Why put the most people on the shortest sides of the field, with the worst angles?

If they expand the stadium, I hope they don't stack a bunch of skyboxes and club seats up there. I'd rather see a massive level that would actually give more folks a better view of the field, and not just be another money grab, catering to a select few.

Then if they want, put another set of skyboxes along the south section of the stadium. And cash in on any sort of demand there could still be for these.

BAM!

Sabado: Darrell K Royal here in Austin is a beautiful example of that. I know, I know, Texas, rage, hate, etc. etc... But it's got over 100k capacity and, aside of a smallish section of a few thousand (maybe 10-15) under the big screen, it's mostly a horseshoe. Check this out:

(sorry for the huge link address :( )

Dunno what would be the best fit for Lincoln, but hopefully it captures some more sound. From what Osborne said, sounds like you could be looking at capacity up to about 92-93k? With Memorial's layout, that might be close to the upper limit without destroying the stadium as we know it. I'm not sure how much bigger or higher you can go otherwise.

oh god I broke the whole page. Sorry, I forgot that didn't wrap...

I'll be going now...

KFSquirrel...

You can use http://bit.ly/ to shorten your link next time.

Yeah, I think a gigantic upper deck (like the west side at DKR) would be a better use of stadium expansion, rather than a bunch of premium seats that will only add a few thousand fans. There are definitely WAAAAY more fans at DKR getting a good view of the field than there are poor saps shoved into the endzones and forced to watch only half of the game from a greater distance. Once they completely enclose that field (and jump capacity up like 20K) I'm sure that place is going to be loud as hell.

Dammit.

I shoulda just linked it. http://bit.ly/. There. Fixed.

I'm spoiled by some sites that auto-link/auto-word wrap and/or auto-shorten. I should have known better.

Won't make the same mistake twice! :)

Three thoughts from #2134 on the season ticket wait list...

1. The sellout streak must be preserved at all costs.
2. Exiled's comment earlier about college athletics being a "bubble" was a little chilling. There is such a thing as "too big".
3. I'd love to have a pair of tickets that I could call my own...

C-YA Big 12. Maybe u should have listened to Nebraska 15yrs ago. Dr. Tom never forgot the 11-1 votes and how the Big 8 teams caved into Texas and sold the Corn out.

BO BIG 10!!!

Posted by: Fitzy on June 9, 2010 11:23AM CST
I really hope that was a really bad joke Ray...

Tear down one of the most iconic stadiums in college football? That would be the dumbest move in the history of the game. Heck, lets tear down Wrigley field next... Get a grip man.

hey guys. long time reader, first time writer.

this is the first topic (in addition to the whole realignment mess) that ever sparked my interest enough to get me to register. we definitely have to expand more than 4k or 5k. that's ridiculous

i completely agree with what sabado gigante said. it's totally disgusting that there's more seats crammed into the endzones than on the sidelines. i can't believe they added onto the north before the south.

we should tear down the current balcony on the east side and install 20 or so suites with 15k or so regular seats above the suites. elevate it a little to and remove the colums to help "unobstruct" the view that people under the current balcony have to put up with.

also on the realignment front... don't be homers people. the big 10 has tons of history and full of admirable programs. i'd love to join. not to mention the academic side; moving to the big 10 would bring in tons of research dollars and make all of our degrees look twice as good later down the road.
