A few final thoughts...
Posted by: Steve Sipple on October 9, 2009 at 1:10AM CST

Ndamukong Suh for Heisman?

I think voters should start considering him. Seriously. I don't think it's necessarily a crazy notion. The award is supposed to go to the nation's best player, right?

How many defenders do you see who are as disruptive as Suh week in and week out?

Plus, he's extremely athletic for a man his size. Carl Pelini told me recently Suh could be an All-American guard or center on offense. He's that talented.

Wonder if Suh can long-snap?

He's just one heck of a football player. He was easily the best player on the field Thursday night on ESPN.

The nation no doubt took note.

Wonder if Heisman voters did?

A few other things . . .

I'm still trying to come to grips with the fact freshman Cody Green was warming up on the sideline right before Zac Lee gunned a 56-yard touchdown pass to Niles Paul with 13:56 left in the game. Probably a good thing he didn't overthrow Paul.

Well, now what?

It's hard to ignore how mightily Lee struggled most of the night, the elements notwithstanding.

But you also have to give the kid a lot of credit for rallying late.

ha hah ha ha ah ha. Suh the next O'leary?

Posted by: Inbread on October 9, 2009 1:13AM CST
Oh yeah, like bam or something....

Posted by: Inbread on October 9, 2009 1:19AM CST
Sipp, the resiliency of young Mr. Lee, is not something you can dismiss. I am so unbelievably proud of the way he came back. Never surrender attitudes, produce HUGE wins. He can be the type of guy that Major applewhite was. His type of leadership can put hardware in the case.

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 9, 2009 1:20AM CST
They got to figure a way to get Cody onto the field. Put him in and run a few option plays or roll out play action.

Posted by: MitchellSm on October 9, 2009 1:20AM CST
Zac Lee is the man and Shawn Watson is a GREAT Offensive Coordinator.

All contrary to majority held pre-4th Quarter beliefs. :D

Posted by: Boonies on October 9, 2009 1:34AM CST
Well, there is some precedent for it, isn't there? Woodson won it at MI, right? Was it Charles or Ron? Can't remember

Posted by: Outside The Box on October 9, 2009 1:36AM CST
Let's put the "Suh for Heisman" campaign to bed right now. He will not win because:

1) He's a defensive player
2) He's not a QB or RB
3) He's not (yet) ESPN darlings like Tebow or Clausen.
4) His performances will be muted by the strength of the Big XII, and how we rolled the Sun Belt teams.

That said, it will be a major injustice if (at his current level of play) he doesn't win the Lombardi.

Posted by: Inbread on October 9, 2009 1:37AM CST
I dont think a D-tack has ever won it. But right now, he is the most dominating presence in college football IMO. Yes he does deserve consideration for the HM. Man among boys.

Any word on Helu?

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on October 9, 2009 1:40AM CST
Sun was just unreal. And great 4th quarter by Zac bouncing back. Tough conditions and we struggled, but the team and Zac showed real mettle in the 4th.

Posted by: Inbread on October 9, 2009 1:41AM CST
OTB, agree 110%. He very well could be the best in the game (today), and not even sniff the trophy, for precisely you 4 reasons stated above. Anyways, SG, IH, OTB Step, et al, I am about to hit the sack, nite all. That good home mad shine, the ecstasy of a win, have done me in. GO BIG RED GO BIG RED GO BE GRED...he he

If we don't beat Teck next week.... then this wins means nothing.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 9, 2009 1:43AM CST
Zac Lee does remind me of Applewhite.

Gomes and Dennard. Those guys look like Cover2 CB's.

I'm out as well.

ah....my voice is gone from yelling at the tv...

Posted by: MitchellSm on October 9, 2009 1:45AM CST
Great point, Step, as usual (long time lurker here). Our team clearly knows how to respond after a tough loss; now let's see how they respond after a gutsy win.

I suppose they did do well last year after KU...

Bread))) What a loser! You down a bunch of tequila then bounce early! Geez! Whats next? A nap in the 3rd Q?

Posted by: bruNo on October 9, 2009 1:48AM CST
Lee got r dun in a huge game when the chips were totally down, when we needed it, that really shows me something, not everybody can do that, he made TY Taylor's comeback vs US look like child's play....

I mean, after that crappy fumble of his, he could have gone into a shell, but he didnt--he just kept coming back, trying again...thats what you gotta do.

He's kinda green and we knew that coming in. He grew some more this game, he just has to fine tune some things and I think he will be alright.

I would like to see CG in there on some special read option type things from time to time...

why not?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 9, 2009 1:49AM CST
Mitchell... you should post. I'm out.

Posted by: bruNo on October 9, 2009 1:52AM CST
suh for heisman consideration, absolutely, if he keeps playing like this and helping our team gets Ws, yea, I think he is the best player in the country.

He's in incredible shape and extremely athletic. Great technique and 'head' for the game.

That pick he had reminded me of what he was trying to do vs Tyrod on their game winning td pass, suh was trying to position himself to swat/INT the ball, but eventually had to rush him, and nearly got the sack.

he's a smart player.

Let other's from around the nation start the Suh campaign for Heisman... Husker fans can simply serve as the chorus who remind the ignorant of what a dominant player Mr.Suh is for the scarlet and cream.

When Craig James suggests it on ESPN, let's have 100 Husker fans second the nomination. And if Chris Fowler suggests it, let's have 1000 Husker fans echo the sentiment. It will materialize... simply have patience as other canidates are ran up the flag pole and fail to deliver on the promises of riches beyond the proverbial rainbow, the "House of Spears" wil show his true value not only to Husker fans from Omaha to Scottsbluff, but to other knowledgable college football fans around the nation. This is a great year to vote for the unsuspecting... no better candidate than our man, our child, our beast... Ndamokong Suh!!!

Posted by: boom.roasted on October 9, 2009 3:02AM CST
Suh's probably the best player in the country. He would be deserving of the Heisman.

On Green warming up... Frankly, the way Lee had been playing, I'd be pretty concerned if Green wasn't warming up. At some point, when your quarterback is throwing like 30% and nothing is working and you're losing the game, you've got to be willing to change things up. They didn't and it worked out. But I'd be worried if the thought didn't even cross the coaches' minds.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 9, 2009 3:40AM CST
No doubt. It was right there. Green was about to come in. Nothing else to lose.

I've got no patience now. So sick of complacence now. Time has come to pay.

Yes I know my enemies. They are the teachers who taught me to fight me. Compromise, conformity, assimilation, submission. Ignorance, hypocrisy, brutality, the elite. All of which are American dreams! They'll be no shelter here!

Congratulations Huskers, you did something that others could not do for eight years. We also found out what ole momentum can do once you get it. We also verified that while we did win this game, we still have a lot of work to do with this offense. For three quarters last night they did pretty much what they usually do and despite all of that, they still won this very important game. I do not have the numbers quarter by quarter yet, but I suspect those numbers will support my initial assessment of this performance for three quarters. It never hurts to have a little luck and they capitalized on it when it mattered most. There are eight more games coming up and each one of them could be just as tough as this one. One quarter of football does not erase our offensive scheme vulnerabilities. Playing in adverse weather conditions also shows the importance of practicing in those conditions once in a while. Again, this was a great win for them and I hope they learn because this usually does not happen very often in one quarter of ball.

3rd possession of the 3rd Qtr, I was saying that if Green knew enough of the offense, he should be in there.

Posted by: drivebyposter on October 9, 2009 7:14AM CST
Suh was pretty good. The DB's and LB's made the game period and they were GREAT.

The General (Lee) is the leader. Cody may can play, but The General can lead.

The General lead em up and out, even with poor play by the O-line and an even worse O-coordinator pretending it was all on purpose.

Posted by: Bumarooskie on October 9, 2009 7:52AM CST
I'm extremely proud of the team, particularly the defense, in the way they kept fighting play after play even when things went horribly wrong. I shudder when I think that just two years ago, this team would've melted like cotton candy in that rain. The Huskers made us proud with their guts and determination. You could see the emotion in Bo's face during the post game interview on ESPN.

That said, it was a pretty ugly game on offense. OK, no news here, but I see the template for every defensive coordinator in the league on down the line. They're going to load up the line and make Zac Lee beat them. It sure seems the Huskers should've committed more to the run, but the situation was ripe for big plays in the passing game -- if you hit the passes. For most of three quarters, the Huskers didn't hit the receivers. It wasn't just the rain or Missouri rush. Just hitting two or three of those clear misses would've turned the tide. Accurate passing would've opened up the running game and turned this game into a blow-out. I give great credit for the fourth quarter rally, however, we won't win many games throwing away three qaurters worth of offense. Let's hope the big game shakes are gone for good.

And those dad-gum penalties. AARRRRRGGGGGH!!

How about Alex Henery's heads up play and tossing the ball out of the back of the end zone after a bad snap? An MU touchdown there might have really changed the outcome.

Overall, it's so gratifying to see the Huskers fighting through 60 minutes of play. We watched the game with some Mizzou fans and after three quarters I thought I was going to be eating another serving of crow; but the team turned the tables and I got to serve it up to them. The coaches know there's lots to fix (did I mention those $&#%%@! penalties)? Will we see the big game where the offense carries the load? I hope so.

Big Suh. Thanks for coming back and you have my vote for Heisman.

Posted by: festusmonroe on October 9, 2009 7:56AM CST
It's funny that NFL scouts, whose livelihoods depend on finding the best football players in America, think Suh is one of top 5 players in the country, but the Heisman will end up going to some QB with no NFL future who's fortunate enough to play for a top-10 team.

I know the Heisman goes to the best college player, not best pro prospect, but I refuse to believe the best players in the country only play RB or QB. Voters need to look a little harder.

Suh is already on My Fav Husker list right next to ol slappy himself-Grant Wistrom!

Posted by: cajunhusker on October 9, 2009 9:00AM CST
I would have yanked Lee, at least for a series or two, in the middle of the third quarter.

Posted by: Bloozman on October 9, 2009 9:31AM CST
Big Suh is a better football player than Tim Tebow! Get the word out!

Posted by: Islander/Husker on October 9, 2009 9:50AM CST
Suh never takes a play off, never gives up on a play, he just flat out ourworks other guys. Plus he is sooo smart. Did you hear his quote on the interception? He wanted to make sure after getting the ball to get to the ground and maintain ball security. Very smart.

Posted by: MattWo on October 9, 2009 9:53AM CST
Did this game remind any Husker historians of the 1990 NU-Colorado game? Of course, we were on the losing end of that one. NU led the eventual national champions (maybe that's a good omen, eh?) 6-0 at half and 12-0 going into the 4th qtr on a TD pass from Mickey Joseph to Jonnie Mitchell. Then CU hit a long pass early in the 4th to set up their first TD and the flood gates opened. After 4 Eric Bienemy touchdowns, the Buffs won by a score of...27-12. In a rainstorm no less! Eerily similar game to last night's! Nice to have the Huskers on the winning end this time...

Posted by: TerryDa on October 9, 2009 10:54AM CST
I think Lee should be replaced everytime he screws up, at least one series by Green. I just want to see what Green brings to the table. A number of times last night, Lee, after throwing errantly or making a bad play, looked like he was laughing. What kind of leader is that? I think Pelini needs to make it clear, if you are not producing, you don't play. I am so happy to see Dennard replacing West. West killed us last year. And maybe Gomes should be at the other corner. Let Amukamara be the nickel guy. Eric Hagg has seemed to disappear as well. I was proud of Dilliard. He should start the rest of the season. Compton is young and making mistakes. Bring in Eric Martin for Fisher too. Martin can hit! I hope we play better against Texas Tech?

Posted by: MileHiHusker on October 9, 2009 11:03AM CST
What's the weather in Lincoln next Saturday? Both teams looked pretty bad and the weather obviously had a lot to do with that. Rain is one thing but that was just nasty. NU needs to work on some miss direction running plays and fakes. If you only have 3 runniong plays and the D knows when you are running it is hard to establish anything.

Posted by: jd hail on October 9, 2009 11:26AM CST
Nebraska finally won a big game. Thanks to Suh and the rest of the defense. Bring out some Blackshirts. The best defensive game I've see at NU for a long long time.

As for Zac Lee he is no General, He might be the best we have right now, but we better be bringing Green along quickly. Coming back was awesome but we can't rely on that week after week against good teams. GREAT Game for NU. GBR

Posted by: Bornhusker on October 9, 2009 11:32AM CST
The most popular player on every team is the 2nd string quarterback. I have no doubt that Cody can be a star, but then I had no doubt Joe Dailey could be one, too.

Agreeing with Driveby is unnerving, but, yes, the General has shown he's the leader. And let's not forget that he outplayed that other guy, whatshisname, Blair – Blake – Blaine something. Check the stats.

But the real story is, of course, the D. They've shown the more hostile the crowd the more hostile they are. Offenses win games (sometimes), but defenses win championships.

Seemed like when we ran straight at them, we did well. All the misdirection, delayed handoffs, etc. usually fell victim to MU's speed. Don't underestimate that Mu's defense may have been tiring late in the game. Their offense had a lot of three and outs, maybe more than we had. What was the time of possession?

Posted by: Bornhusker on October 9, 2009 11:46AM CST
... Footnote to my previous post:

I checked a Missouri blog and, lo and behold, many of their fans are upset that their 2nd string quarterback didn't play. Go figure.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on October 9, 2009 11:54AM CST
Zac Lee is not a polished QB. He continues to have bad outings in big games. He was off of the mark for the first 3 quarters, especially on these short lateral throws in the flat, or sideline patterns from outside of the pocket. There was one crazy play where he scrambled, ran over the line, and instead of running ahead for the first down, dipped back behind the line and threw an incomplete pass. He has ability, as demonstrated in the 4th quarter, but needs to be a lot more consistent. I would like to see him sit when he is playing poorly, and observe what Green can do for a while. Sometimes, a stint on the bench improves one's focus on the field. So far, he has been lucky not to have interceptions, but he should have recovered his own fumble after he fell on top of it. Even though he performed poorly for most of the game, the team performance was good enough to win in spite of the all of the miscues by snappers, punt returners, receivers, and the QB.

Nevertheless, it was a great win for the program. This game in the rain reminded me of the Gotham Bowl in the snow which helped in the big turnaround in 1962. The Missouri win may herald another big modern day turnaround. Let's hope so. The coaching staff has got this program moving in the right direction. The defense is really focused except for the occasional big play right before the half or end of game. The offense still needs a lot of improvement in the O-line and receivers. Special teams are a disaster with bad snaps, dropped punts, and zero runbacks. It is still a work in progress, but progress can be seen, overall. Great win, but not a signature win yet.

Ray,
Your reminiscence of the Gotham Bowl brings back memories. Did you read that they're going to have another NY Bowl game in Yankee Stadium? What are they thinking????

Posted by: BenAr2 on October 9, 2009 12:56PM CST
I don't think Lee has what it takes to take us to the North championship. He's not having problems with reading defenses or keeping his composure in the pocket (things which are fixable), he is having major problems getting the ball anywhere close to wide open receivers on 10 to 20 yard routes. It's clear that he has the ability to throw a good ball, but on way too many occasions, he is completely missing receivers. It's very troubling. It seems to have most often when he is on the move . . . he just can't run and throw at the same time. If this is the case, defenses should be making every effort to force him out of the pocket and make him roll and throw. I'm very concerned about our ability to win with him under center.

Welcome Mitchell sm. You talk sense.

I really like the Boy named Suh. I think he is every bit as good or better of a defensive lineman than Warren Sapp, only with more brain and less mouth.

Posted by: HollywoodHusker on October 10, 2009 4:46AM CST
Our Defense is obviously much better this year than last. In fact, it's taken a much bigger step then I think most of us fans even expected. But what is with the offensive play calling? Why are we relying on Lee's arm and running ability? and he obviously has trouble passing on the run (which is why I miss Ganz). What got us back in the game on offense was when we starting running on first and second down. Along with cutting down on the penalties, we actually got into a rythm. Maybe we need Bill Callahan to come back for a motivational half time speech on "pounding the rock!!!!!" haha

Posted by: NostraDumbAss on October 10, 2009 7:08AM CST
One of the things which helps Suh will eventually be his downfall, the NU offense.

In big games our offense goes into a shell. There are plenty of three and outs with a few turnovers thrown in. This puts Suh on the field more and it gives the announcers something positive to say about the Huskers. Let's face it, when he is on the field he is tough to miss.

If the offense does not improve, we can easily lose two or possibly three more games. You can be the most dominate player in all of college football, but if your team loses three games you have no chance of winning the Heisman.
