1959 Husker reunion
Posted by: Steve Sipple on November 5, 2009 at 8:13AM CST

More than 30 players from Nebraska's 1959 team will have a reunion this weekend in Lincoln.

The Huskers finished 4-6 that season under Bill Jennings. But they pulled off a landmark triumph, a 25-21 decision over No. 19 Oklahoma that ended the Sooners' 74-game conference unbeaten streak. It was also NU's first win over OU in 17 years.

Classes were canceled at Nebraska the following Monday to allow the celebration to rage on.

Has OU really been that good, that long? It's amazing NU has more overall wins. Sooners must have gone through some ugly losing streaks.

Big year for reunions.

As I recall, the Sooners sucked from when Barry Switzer got em nuked by the NCAA and was fired, right up until Bob Stoops came along. Not sure but about 3 or 4 head coaches went through OK during that period. Sorta like our Solich/HWNSNBM period.

This team actually had some very good players including Pat Fischer and Ron McDole who both ended up playing 17 and 18 years respectively in the NFL and getting multiple Pro Bowl selections, etc.

Is there a list available of who is to be in town?

oops....forgot to add Mick Tinglehoff to the above list and the same NFL career achievements apply.

The "HDOG" was @ that game, tho just a puppy! Sat w/my owners (parents) - season tickets west stadium. Only east & west stadiums, with knot holes in end zones! 35,000 capacity! Ah la Callasham, Jennings could recruit, but not coach! Even tho I was a young pup, my folks let me drink - " till the dogs came home!!" Or was that "cows"? LOL

Tinglehoff had a "STELLAR" career with the Vikings! Pat Fischer with St. Louis Cardinals & Washington Redskins, if my memory serves me well! Fischer was a QB for DONU & a DB in the pro's. PS - The "DOG" was just a puppy & the memory is foggy!
